  What's in a name?
Posted by: Caira Ayryn - 03-19-2015, 09:41 PM - Forum: The Creative Corner - Replies (20)

What inspired your character's name? Random, latin based, or just a lovely ring to it?

Names can be like music to our ears and completely exclusive to our character. They can be beautiful, make us smile, and even have exaggerated or ominous tones. Is a person hyper or low-key? Names are like first impressions, and like it or not they can say a lot about who we are and what our aspirations might be (think, seven deadly sins from FMAB.)

It's funny how a single letter or an excess syllable can effect the outcome of a flowing word rolling off your tongue. Don't believe me? Take a consequential letter out of a well known name or your own. "Goku might become Gok (which resembles the verb gawk), or Ichigo becomes Igo (which sounds more like ego, and might give an impression of excessive height) and L from Death note becomes nameless and his intrigue goes down, at least in my opinion because it no longer stands for where my mind wants to ponder: An unrefined basis of implied priority.. Logic or law?

It's amazing how allegories or allusions can be matched with how a name sounds while the origin can directly relate to multiple sources of history (Alexander the Great, Joan of the Arc) or other characters told in stories/ fairytales that captivate us with their legacies (Zoro a swordsman from One Piece.)

Not just for original characters, feel free to post your own input as to what you think might make a character's name more defining with their other features: amiable, mysterious, or perhaps even adventurous.

P.S. It doesn't have to be a character from this site either, any media inspired name or otherwise intriguing moniker can fall under this thread, as we ask the question:

What makes a name fit?

  Making .gifs from Videos. Help!
Posted by: Sasuke Uchiha - 03-19-2015, 01:58 PM - Forum: The Creative Corner - No Replies

Can anyone edit a video and make a gif?

Here is ther video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Evshmzosgqg

What I want is to just capture the Jutsu itself, not any of the rest. I can't crop out the middle where they show Naruto's, Sakura's, and even Sasuke's reactions with the site I was using, but thats what I need edited out. Basically I just want a gif of him getting hit, using the substitute jutsu and thats it. If anyone could do this for me tha'd be super sweet. I can't seem to find a .gif of this technique anywhere. Thanks in advance whoever takes this!

Edit: I am going to buy the move and was going to spoiler a gif of its use in my roster, btw if anyone was interested lol.

  Sci-fi Short Story
Posted by: Strazio Rockwell - 03-17-2015, 11:45 PM - Forum: The Creative Corner - No Replies

So I wrote this short story that I was hoping to get critique and feedback on.

The Ship of Theseus

Imagine you have a ship, a boat, one of the wooden ones from back in the old days. The kind we humans used to travel across the oceans eons before our inevitable voyage out in to space. You take this ship and crawl across an ocean, in your travels the ship naturally decays. You repair the damages and even replace older planks with newer and stronger timber. Over time; over many generations and battles and adventures you eventually replace the final plank. The last piece of original wood is removed and replaced with yet another new plank. My question to you, is this still your ship? In other words, is something still the same even though every little piece of it has been replaced?

This thought experiment is known as The Ship of Theseus. In third grade we learned about this hypothetical ship and even now in my mid-forties my thoughts drift back to that damn question. Our teachers and parents taught us about this concept because it was an easy way of taking a complex issue and breaking it down into something easily digestible. At the age of five children are allowed to travel using teletransportation devices. Teletransportation is a well defined and documented scientific process, supposedly safe and foolproof; refined by hundreds of years of scientific advancement. And yet I’ve never stepped foot inside one of those cold transporters.

Even now at the end of the line, even though I’m stranded in the drifting shell of a trashed spaceship, lost in the nothingness of space, I’m still avoiding the question. At the end of the day after everything is done and dusted, is that still the same ship you started with? Most people would argue that the ship is still the same. Five year old me disagreed. Five year old me was terrified of the teletransporter. You see, the transporter works by scanning your body, taking note of the position of every atom and molecule in your body. Then painlessly the transporter breaks apart the chemical bonds of your molecules tearing them down into raw atomic mass. Your blueprint is then transmitted to another transporter anywhere within the known universe. This transporter receives the data and reconstructs you from a block of raw matter, positioning every molecule and atom precisely where they were. The entire process has a ninety-nine percent success rate and can take anywhere from a few minutes to several years, depending on how far away you decide to travel. So I guess the real question I’m asking is at the end of a transportation are you still the same person?

The computer flared to life and echoed a warning throughout my ship.

“Less than three percent power remaining” My ship had been hit by an asteroid, something our scanners should have noticed, but due to a computer error they didn’t notice until it had already smashed into our engines and ripped them from the hull. For the past week my crew and I have been marooned in an uninhabited stretch of space. Most of them have already opted to bail and use the transporter. The only one left is Martin, my best friend and most trusted crew member. He doesn’t have the same issues with the transporter that I do. As far as I can tell he’s only staying behind to try and change my mind, I almost wish he was more persuasive.

Using conveniently placed handrails, Martin floats onto the bridge of the ship. Every thing except for the oxygen synthesizer and the transporter was disabled shortly after the asteroid impact, including the gravity generator. Most ships are designed to be functional in 0 Gs and this one is no exception. I released the belt holding me fixed to the captain’s chair and with a light push I began to drift towards the large plasticite viewport. I pressed my hands against the dome and heald the breadth of space in front of me. All I could see was a curtain of black, with bright white pinpoints scattered throughout. We truly were in the depths of nowhere, lost in a void of nothingness.

“I’m leaving Charles, I wish I could stay longer. But the transporter will be inoperable very soon” his voice was even and solemn and hung in the air, slightly echoeing in the empty room. We were used to making tough choices, but even so I could feel the apprehension in his voice. He didn’t want to leave me behind, but I didn’t want to go.

“I understand Martin” I pushed off the view port and oriented myself to face him “thank you for staying with me for as long as you did.”

I flashed him a big toothy smile, something to try and lighten the mood. Unfortunately matters of death are rarely afforded the luxery of light-heartedness. Martin steadied himself against the captain’s chair, my chair, and looked up at me. He shook his head and dug his fingers deep into the foam backing of the chair.

“Listen Charles we’ve known eachother since we were boys, so I hope you’ll take what I’m about to say to heart. But come the fuck on, we’re supposed to be survivors tough badass mercenaries and you’re just going to roll over and die like this? Take the damn transporter, and don’t be a coward” he was a man of few words, but when he spoke he spoke with the force of a crashing wave.
“Is the Ship of Theseus still the same ship?” I asked him.

  “What are you talking about?”

“You know exactly what I’m talking about Martin, the Ship of Theseus we all learned about it and yet no one has been able to convince me that the ship is the same after all of its components have been replaced” I wanted him to prove me wrong, convince me otherwise. We met eyes and he took a few seconds to compose an answer, these seconds felt like eternities. His voice shattered the silence, it rolled and rumbled before finally ending in a crushing crescendo.
“Of course the ship is still the same. It serves the same purpose and for all intents it is the exact same damn ship. We’re not hunks of wood, we’re living breathing and thinking creatures. My thoughts have not left me and I still have the same hopes and dreams and aspirations. I am still me.”

“How are you so sure? You’re just whatever the transporter decides to create, you’re a copy of a copy of a copy” my voice raised and trembled to match his conviction.

His hands dug deeper into the foam backing of my chair. He knew better than to argue with me, I’m stubborn. But even still, Martin didn’t back down.
“I’m a copy?” he scoffed and threw his hands in the air. Before he could continue I interjected, hoping to drive the point home.

“Yes, the transporter just creates a copy of you.. It may have the thoughts and body of Martin, but it is not the original Martin, just a well-made facsimile. I haven’t stepped near a transporter I’m one-hundred percent authentic, my mind and my body is my own and my soul has never left its home.”

Another warning echoed through the ship. Less than two percent power remaining. I floated down to my chair and stood across from him. He was speechless, his eyes bore holes into my skull. His devilish look did nothing to abate me, being moments from death does amazing things to boost one’s courage. I continued to speak, hoping to deliver the coup de grace.

“There’s nothing you can say Martin, just go. I’m not going to let that transporter kill me just so an imitation can take my place and that’s the end of it. Sorry”

I kicked off from the chair and floated back towards the view port. Silence had never been so loud, I almost felt bad for him.

“You know what I think? I think you’re a fucking coward too terrified to take any chance less than concrete. You’re scared and you’d rather die alone than take a chance. Goodbye Martin” he hit me harder than any asteroid ever could, I felt a tightening in my gut. My brain scrambled to piece together a retort, but rather it fell short. I turned around just in time to see him take one last look at me

“One more thing, I’m glad you don’t think I have my soul, that I’m just a copy. I am just as genuine and complete as you are, in fact the only difference between me and you is that I’m not the one that’s going to die alone today.” he retreated into the doorway and left me devastated.

Having never stepped foot in a transporter I know that I am genuine, that these thoughts are mine and mine alone. How can he be so sure that he is completer? To step inside that transporter and be killed just so a computer can rebuild a copy of you elsewhere seems ludicrous. Some would argue that you aren’t your body nor your thoughts, but rather some immeasurable soul. They say that this soul will follow itself to your new body and consciousness. How can he be so sure that his did? Even if that’s that case I don’t want to risk some body double running around with my thoughts and dreams, but without my soul.

So here I wait, watching the curtain of space from my little broken ship. Waiting for the inevitable suffocation as the oxygen synthesizer runs out of power. I’ve done all that I’ve wanted to in live. I’ve had more than enough adventures and loves. But one thing I wish to know before I die. One final question that haunts me i s the Ship of Theseus still the same ship at the end of its journey?

  Blog of a Spaceman
Posted by: Guu - 03-17-2015, 05:07 AM - Forum: Dataverse Messageboards - Replies (7)

Hello my followers, Spaceman here.

You may wonder what happened to me. I know it seemed ominous for me to go silent on all of you like that, and I apologize if I frightened anyone. I want to let you all know that I am still among the realm of the living, and while what I have to say isn’t pleasant, I will still remain there for a long time. Please don’t worry about me; while I may have my issues, I won’t do anything stupid.

You see, before I came to the Omniverse, I was a great explorer. I would search through the vastness of space on my ship the Excalibur. I’ve escaped the gravity of numerous black holes at once (though not as difficult as some may think,) I’ve stood on alien worlds, greeted alien cultures, single handedly defended the Earth from defenders; I was celebrated as a hero but for some reason I never cared how people thought of me. In retrospect, I guess I just thrilled at the idea of the vastness of it all. Just the thought that space was endless, there were always worlds to explore and things to see, that excited me. Never thought it made me insignificant, just thought of it as just more of a challenge to prove myself.

So when I was summoned to the Omniverse as a secondary, I was thrilled.
“Eight different worlds to explore? This is so incredibly epic!” Is what I said when I learned about this place.
Heck, I even started this blog as a way of sharing my adventures with everyone. I was jumping at the chance to bring all my new stories to you; you could even still read some of them, I won’t take them down.
However, that was before I realized the truth.

I thought each verse was endless. I thought I could just fly up in each world and explore a separate space exclusive to it. But I quickly realized that each verse has boundaries, and everything beyond it was just more scene dressing than an actual place. I was devastated. I was trapped in a tiny little bubble, except with no chance of bursting through.
I tried to continue my adventures after that, I really did. I traveled to each verse, visiting its most well known landmarks but the further I went along, the more I felt I was closer to the ending. This universe was too small for me, and I knew it. I never recovered from that realization.

So what’s next for me now? Well, I’ve done something I never thought I’d do. I’ve settled down. I found a girl in Costa Del Sol; single mom with a little girl to look after. Don’t worry, I do love them a lot, I just never expected that this would be the end game.

With that, I end this blog. It has been a good run and I want to thank everyone who has followed me on this journey. I’m sorry it all ended in an anti-climax.

[float=right]Keep trekking,
The Space Man.[/float]

Do the characters have to become one physical entity for Fusion? I was wondering if Neku could eventually get Fusion and Symbiosis and synchronize with people for Cross Combos without having to buy a new super move for EVERY partner.

  C&C Gilgamesh
Posted by: Sasuke Uchiha - 03-15-2015, 11:28 PM - Forum: The Creative Corner - Replies (1)

As promised, I have some C&C. Gil, I didn't do 'The King Has Arrived" because I told you already for the most part and I know you have more like a fight with Guu, but this is as far as your roster is updated. I will do the others at another time. So, here we go.

The King and His Men:
I liked this story as it had a very 'Wild Wild West' feel to it for the most part. I say for the most part because I felt like the sand mage went against this and was out of place.
However, I can see why you wanted to have the battle cause... it was a sweet f*cking battle, lol. Gil's powers matched well against the mage and delivered a 'Showy' battled I enjoyed reading. However, I couldn't help but think it was random and perhaps a battle for a different arc. None the less, good a good read.

Your interaction with meaningless npc's is outstanding. I found myself chuckling when Gil gave the hostile stare to the female innkeeper. xD

The brute who you cut his beard off and carved initials into wasn't real for me... he started all that shit with Gil like he was some tough guy and never made an assault. I just didn't believe it.

Gil has a very strong personality that has me smirking and chuckling as I read which is good and keeps me engaged. This story has me hooked all around as I see it as a 'Fable' of sorts where Gil is completing mission to advance his status as a ruler.

Monster Meets King:
First thing, I want to point out is that showing is always better than telling and we have an example of that in the way Eudocia writes that was not lost on me. Specifically she writes how Eudocia hates the heat due to the sticky feeling of her sweat rather than just stating, "Hey, its hot in the dunes." Which I love.

On a side note to this, I believe the dunes is a desert and would experience a dry heat, not one with humidity meaning she wouldn't really sweat. Now, I probably only caught this because I live in Phoenix Arizona, which is a desert environment. So, for someone like me it immediately broke me from the story, but for most it would go unnoticed so no worries, it probably wasn't caught by anyone else xD!

Now… Am I the only one getting a Joker and Harley Q vibe on this? I feel like this is some classic psycho shit lol.....Update: It's worse than Psycho, she eats them too apparently. xD,<3

Playing with dead people through the use of telekinesis is pretty twisted. Gil had some pretty crazy muscle in Eudocia, it's too bad he lost this follower =P

Lice? Lol, wut? This was funny.

Okay, cool, now see this is something we can roll with. Up until now Gil had just been a cocky, self-entitled tyrant, but with him feeding that family of six he may just come into rule yet =O
I like that you are maintaining to call her “his lion”. At first I didn’t get it, but as I continued to read it made more sense. It matches his personality as it both places him in dominance over her and it also does to ‘pretty’ her up because as we all know he likes to be surrounded by treasure and the best life has to offer. That or I am just reading too much into it xD

I feel like this is a real adventure and they are facing real problems. Like how they avoided the encounter up ahead on the path because it’s a desert and their exhausted. It wouldn’t have been bad if you fought right then and there, however, it’s really good that you didn’t. It’s nicely done. ^_^
I really like this combination. They feed off each other well.

Dude, you fight the coolest things, from the Sand Mage in your previous thread to a Scarab monster made of tiny Scarabs. I especially like the part where the beam went through a newly created hole and thus was dodged, nice!

“The cold steel reflecting his iron will as he walked over to the disgusting creature that tainted his future city. The monster had no change in it's face, its constantly moving parts forever faceless.” ^^^^^^ that’s just well written, kudos. ^_^

I dunno if this is a plot hole or anything but if he is summoning a palace now, why didn’t he just do that before dealing with the horrible accommodations at the Inn? Just some food for thought.

Oh Snap! I <3 OmniTwitter!

It’s awesome, because I was wondering how you were going to end this rest phase and ‘wa-la’ OmniTwitter. It’s cool because when I first seen this commotion I hadn’t really read your work that much and thought it was silly you were going after a 10 year old. Now that I have read it, it’s only logical Gil would go after her, lol! (That’s Gil!)

  A Snake's Arrival
Posted by: Medusa - 03-15-2015, 09:33 PM - Forum: The Nexus - No Replies

White. All Medusa could see was whiteness, nothing else. The whole space was devoid of any color. Her ears rang, as if a explosion had just happen near her however she didn't feel the slightest ting of pain. Medusa's golden eyes continued to scan the blank landscape until her eyes rested on a certain entity.

The entity had milky white skin, devoid of any color just like the landscape. However the one difference that he had was the shadowy outline that was cast upon his body. That was mainly how Medusa could even make out his figure from the the rest of the landscape. A smile was on his on his showcasing his pearly white teeth. It was weird how she could still make out his teeth but more than that Medusa focused on where she was!

"Where am I? I could have sworn I was about to be killed by that mad man Stein....." Medusa thoughts trailed off. Her lips opened to let out a laugh however no sound escaped from her mouth. She had escaped death! Medusa had escaped being killed off by Stein well...in a different way than she planned. Nevertheless she was away from Stein without having to use that spell, the question was where was she now?

Quote:“My name is Omni. This is not the world you know. This is the Omniverse. You interest me, so I have made you part of it. The Omniverse is a place that reflects the wishes of those who are part of it. But! There are rules. I will explain them only once, so listen carefully.”

"The Omniverse? What sort of place was this? Did this entity save my life from getting killed by Stein? No matter, what kind of world have they brought me into? That is the question." Medusa thought, her facial expression giving no signs to the calculating thoughts that were going on inside her head. Her yellow eyes scanned the entity's body.

Quote:Omni hands you a glimmering orb in which all the colors of the rainbow coalesce. “This is Omnilium. It’s what ties the Omniverse together. Without it, you are nothing. With it, anything you desire can be yours. But you will need more than this. If you desire it enough, you will find it. You will find that using it comes naturally. Just think of what you desire most.

“You will not be alone in the Omniverse. There are others. Of course, they, too desire Omnilium. Do not fear death. For as long as you interest me, you will be reborn.

“That’s all you need to know right now. You’ll figure out the rest soon enough. I’ll be watching … and waiting.”

Before Medusa could even comment about what it said in her head she saw the landscape fade away leaving her in darkness. Not even before a second had passed she found herself sitting on the ground. Medusa quickly looked around again examining her surroundings. The surroundings were the same as before, a blank landscape devoid of colors. Medusa did spot something else new. Several feet away from her there was a spiral staircase going upward. She couldn't even locate how far it went, it had just seemed endless. Upon further inspection it appeared like the staircase was made from marble.

Medusa rose to a stand taking this moment to examine her attire. She wore the same outfit that she wore when she was fighting Stein however it looked brand new. She wore the black body-length suit with a hood that had two eye markings on it. Medusa glanced back to find her spell 'Tail Snake' to still be there. Curious as to what portion of her abilities did she have left she tried to manipulate the tail. To her success it worked, gaining few mobility of the tail within a few seconds.

Medusa moved her eyes away from her tail and looked around the landscape. She couldn't make out anything except for the blank landscape. "Looks like I have to take my chances." She mumbled under her breath. With this she began to walk, her bare feet slapping across the ground. Medusa still couldn't help but find this whole situation interesting. The Omniverse, Omni, and Omnilium. This world had peeked her interest, it was certainly better than that mundane world that she once was in. However the though of whether the Kishin revived successfully or not came to her mind. To this she could only let out a sigh. She didn't exactly completely trust in Erika, Free, or Crona to get the job done right. Now she was in the Omniverse and she didn't have no way back. She had other things to think about on this long walk other than what had happened to them.
