What's in a name? - Caira Ayryn - 03-19-2015

What inspired your character's name? Random, latin based, or just a lovely ring to it?

Names can be like music to our ears and completely exclusive to our character. They can be beautiful, make us smile, and even have exaggerated or ominous tones. Is a person hyper or low-key? Names are like first impressions, and like it or not they can say a lot about who we are and what our aspirations might be (think, seven deadly sins from FMAB.)

It's funny how a single letter or an excess syllable can effect the outcome of a flowing word rolling off your tongue. Don't believe me? Take a consequential letter out of a well known name or your own. "Goku might become Gok (which resembles the verb gawk), or Ichigo becomes Igo (which sounds more like ego, and might give an impression of excessive height) and L from Death note becomes nameless and his intrigue goes down, at least in my opinion because it no longer stands for where my mind wants to ponder: An unrefined basis of implied priority.. Logic or law?

It's amazing how allegories or allusions can be matched with how a name sounds while the origin can directly relate to multiple sources of history (Alexander the Great, Joan of the Arc) or other characters told in stories/ fairytales that captivate us with their legacies (Zoro a swordsman from One Piece.)

Not just for original characters, feel free to post your own input as to what you think might make a character's name more defining with their other features: amiable, mysterious, or perhaps even adventurous.

P.S. It doesn't have to be a character from this site either, any media inspired name or otherwise intriguing moniker can fall under this thread, as we ask the question:

What makes a name fit?

Re: What's in a name? - Atelos - 03-19-2015

Honestly? I looked up Spartan names and the only one that I thought sounded any good was Atelos. And…It worked? Has a cool Nickname-Attie and I just like it. Not much more to say.

Re: What's in a name? - Proto Man - 03-19-2015

Re: What's in a name? - Deadpool - 03-31-2015

Aero from chubbs....

Got the name because aero is usually used in words that have something to do with flight (aerodynamics)

So the name Arro just felt like it made sense in Chubbs

Re: What's in a name? - Guilmon - 03-31-2015

Most of my OC names usually have something to do with Xaqairy or Charles Xaqairy.

I like the odd spelling for Zachary. Over the years, it's kinda evolved from Zak, which is what I wanted to name my first son. After learning the word "qat", I thought that a "q w/ no u" would be interesting, so I changed it to "Zaq". A year or so went by, and I decided that a Z wasn't weird enough, so it changed to Xaq. Time passed and it eventually changed to Xaqary, Xaqry, and finally to Xaqairy.

For a few years now, I've come to realize that my son would probably hate me for being named Xaqairy, so I came up with a solution. "Charles Xaqairy" sounds like a professional name to me. "Charles X. Stewart, Attorney", "Charles X. Stewart, PhD." While my son may not actually go for a "professional title", I think it still sits well enough that he has enough nicknames to get around the "professionalism" of his name.

After all this time, though, it's come to be more of a character name, rather than lineage. Until I come up with another name for a son, though, I'm sticking with it.

Re: What's in a name? - Neal - 03-31-2015

My real name is Neil, and Neal is based off of "What would I do if..." The name also means Champion, which inspires me and sort of guides my character down the hard path of heroics.

Re: What's in a name? - Guu - 03-31-2015

The TV tropes page gives sort of an explanation where Guu's name comes from:

Quote:The title of the series is a rather elaborate pun that can be read several different ways, due to different readings of some of the words:
In the Jungle was Always Hare but then came Guu
The Jungle was Always Nice, Then Came Guu
The Jungle Is Always Sunny or Hungry

and the most obscure, a pun on a common phrase in Japanese weather forecasts:
The Jungle Is Always Clear, With A Chance of Showers
The Jungle is Always Clear, With Scattered Guu
(where "Hare" means "clear" and "Guu" means "showers").
Any way you read it, it means Guu is turning Hare's life upside down.

As for Lopunny, I believe her name is a combination of "Bunny" and "Lop." As in big loppy ears.

Re: What's in a name? - Caira Ayryn - 04-06-2015

@Vergil oh wow that spelling is really unique. I like it when characters use spelling or pronunciation that sets them apart from the norm. I also appreciate how you explained the spelling so I could tell what you meant.

As for naming people I don't have much experience with that but I think settling with the middle name would he a good idea because on birthday invitations the other parents might spell it the wrong way. However on the upside if you decided you liked it as a first name for him people would be intrigued and surprised to find the spelling isn't what they expected.

@Neil, That's a really cool concept! The pseudonym I write under (not for RP purposes) is based off something similar to my real name as well.

When you said that the meaning inspired you I actually got really touched and i can see where it would inspire you. Its empowering.

@Guu PUNS!! What a cool write up! I had no idea of how common of a phrase that was, and it is entirely ironic that it has to do with weather (as I consider it a relevant topic at least as it pertains in the original setting though I don't know much about the anime). I always thought Haré was named after a bunny for some reason. But aside from the ultimate puns I feel it makes sense somehow.

As for Lopunny, it's perfect.

Re: What's in a name? - Obito Uchiha - 04-08-2015

When I make names for original characters, I sometimes just make them up according to a sound I like. Other times, I will look up names, and I'll pick one that I like the sound of and the meaning of.

Here are a list of names of original characters I remember playing as on various other sites (from the early year onwards, I'm going to try to do this in chronological order):

*Diablo
*Red Claw
*Nexus
*Feldspar
*Darknite
*Kenji
*Marina
*Takashi
*Penurious
*Rathan
*Setherous
*Adara
*Kiara
*Tsukiko
*Hinote
*Seiaryu
*Houkin
*Jun
*Zataku
*Hiko
*Naoki
*Arisa
*Takashi
*Kimi
Yojimbo

There are a few more characters, but I can't think of their names. Oh well.

Re: What's in a name? - Trixie - 05-11-2015

Vad Zulenka came from Ogre Battle 64. He was a named grappler who used fist mounted claws. I removed his middle name and used the likeness of Zhao Yun from Dynasty Warriors as he was my favorite Wei character in 3.

Trixie was the short hand name for Beatrix. I wanted a Victorian era sounding name to fit a demonic entity that would possess Vad's mind and body and eventually become his wife when she learned how to take a corporeal form.

Vad's mother Luna...I think I just liked the name.

Toma was Vad's father and he's from the Bardock Movie. He was my original canon character back in 2006. Because of the lack of photos for Toma and fusion characters not being allowed I used Vegito for his appearance.

Re: What's in a name? - Omni - 05-11-2015

My original character names have a ring to them. I just messed with syllables until I found something good. Later on I changed/refined the names. They're generic ones I use for lots of different character types. For example when I made Rakugi my orc shaman for WoW, I changed it to 'Rakugar', which sounds somewhat more orcy. The ones on the right are the ones I tend to use now generically, though.

Kargupi/Karguro - My shadow warrior. Headstrong and dogged. He's the guy who always goes to the dark side and sometimes is redeemed.
Aurami/Aurilani - Always tends to be a rogue or thief. Character wise she is a charmer.
Amitrika - A frosty character who is strong and occasionally bossy. Usually I manifest her personality literally as a frost mage but she can be all sorts.
Rakugi/Rakugan - The character of mine who tends to represent me, or as closest to myself as I saw myself at a young age. He is peaceful, quiet, logical and scholarly. Tends not to fight, until he does, at which point he pulls Gohans.
Scorch/Magnari - A crazy guy. He has my off the wall sense of humour. I tend to make him a berserker or tank. He is the side of me to just likes to have fun, a bit similar to Aurilani. He is also the most likely to be beastlike in nature. He was originally Karguro's pet Tongue
Infinitos. My generico evil guy. Often comes back from the dead, or is literally daemonic in nature. His original name was literally InfinityHell, because I was 12 Tongue

Re: What's in a name? - Harry Dresden - 05-12-2015

Abbot Pence: Some of you might remember this guy. My GW2 character, also my alias in several other places because it's one of the few names I actually put together entirely on my own. What you may not know is that he's actually part of a dynamic duo of thief and engineer, the other half of which is named Olette Costello. I made the characters with a RL friend of mine, and we took the names from a pair of great comedians, and one of the most obvious secondary character relationships in all of fiction.

Hayden Katran: My french gypsy Keyblader OC who uses Circle of Life and usually ends up using the Keyblade's shape to pull off death-defying acrobatics. I actually pissed someone off with this character because he would intersperse French into his sentences, which absolutely infuriated the admin of the site I was on at the time. His name came from a crazy brainstorming session over a rousing game of Board Game Online. I think I was the only one sober that night, if I'm entirely honest.

Royce ______: My standard Song of Ice and Fire RPG character. His last name varies depending on the house that the players make, though he is, invariably, not a blood relation. The name was chosen ironically; Royce means "royal", which this man is anything but. A middle-aged swordsman who took an arrow to the knee in a fight, and still managed to pull off something that indebted the head of the house to him, changing depending on the game. Invariably takes the position of Master-at-Arms, and takes special care to train the firstborn male heir to defend himself. Usually ends up delegating his Master-at-Arms responsibilities to a second to make sure that the travelling party has at least one capable person, and usually ends up decapitating one of the inevitable bandit ambushers pretty much the second the first fight starts.

Re: What's in a name? - Carn_Val - 05-12-2015

I'm Carn because Carn is an Anomaly. -runs away-
Carn is actually just a way to call a marker made of stacked rocks and stones. I made it into a character that could personify any word with 'carn' in it. Carnival, carnage, carnivore, carnal, encarnate, etc.

Re: What's in a name? - Blink - 05-15-2015

Rebnik.

I just made it up when I was like 12.
