  Riding through the Ashes
Posted by: Sarah Kerrigan - 04-11-2016, 08:51 PM - Forum: The Nexus - No Replies

Raal's exit from the tangled green was accompanied by the echo of hoofbeats in the void and the tremors of an ogre's footstep upon the world. It seemed to Raal that they were making good time.
"care to tell us why we be runnin' this fast, boss?" a young voice stated behind him. Raal turned, causing his horse to slow. "Once I'm certain we're out of earshot. Luckily, the nexus seems relatively...." Raal trailed off.

What in the underworld had happened here?

Scorch marks, cracked and pitted ground, missing chunks of the white flooring of the nexus were the all-too obvious signs of battle that had occurred here. some of these marks were inconsequential, but others... they reminded Raal of the great demons lurking within the nether, and a shudder flew through his bones as he considered that fact.
Some great power had been set into conflict here, and the pockmarked battlefield gave way to a blasted battlefield that few he'd seen would match in unmitigated devastation.
This was clearly not a safe place, and one glance at Zul'kis's face showed that the young troll shared the notion. One glance at Ur'gash's face... well, if nothing else, it had made him attentive enough to keep his finger outside of his noses.

The skeletal wizard made a single motion with his head towards the shimmering, icy portal that would bring them to the fields - and their mission. Zul'kis nodded, and started running, the trolls inhumanly long legs giving him a dashing speed no human would ever match, and Raal's death-charger snorted before running to a gallop.

As the two kept going towards the nexus, with Ur'gash's earthshaking steps loudly informing Raal that the oaf was following at top speed. the trek was not vast - the portal perhaps fifteen minutes away at most - but Raal counted every second as they moved forward, the mage nervous for one of the few times since he'd first entered this place.

A vast power, one sweeping through the nexus... he knew there were beings in this place capable of this level of devastation, of course, but why, then, were they brawling in the middle of the nexus? was it perhaps a result of a squabble between the Empire and the Kingdom, or had Volvagia left it's home universe somehow? Perhaps yet another battle between different factions of primes had broken out? Even with that idea, though, how many primes were capable of this devastation even in groups?

That was what truly bothered him, he realized. Not the level of devastation, or the power of those responsible. it was the lack of knowing that truly rankled Raal. Lack of information had always plagued the horde’s otherwise sterling victories, and produced vulnerability like nothing else could. The first war was plagued by their lack of knowledge on the human’s strength or magic, the second by Gul’dan’s foul work in the shadows, and the battle for the portal by Nerh’zuls secrecy and hidden selfishness.

Yes, Raal reflected. There was nothing nearly as dangerous as ignorance.

“I’ll summarize for you. Your village was attacked. Shortly thereafter, an artifact of importance came to Ven’jo’s attention. The dwarves plan to claim it. He has called me back to deal with both problems.” Raal stated quickly. “To share anything more at this juncture would be risky. For now, let’s focus on crossing the remaining kilometer to the portal.” Raal stated flatly.

He waited to hear a response from Zul’kis, before realizing the troll was likely focusing his energies on running. Unlike Raal and his undead body, Zul’kis had to worry about things like catching his breath. Instead of waiting for an answer, Raal stopped staring at the sweating Troll dashing beside him, and focused on the portal in front of them.

It was his hope that their foray through the nexus would be as uneventful as planned, but not his expectation...

  Moving Out

It had been one big mess.

A big mess that, quite frankly, he was more than glad he had ended up staying out of, especially now. Given the level of firepower he'd seen on display, it was doubtful he would have accomplished anything outside of getting himself seriously damaged, or worse yet, destroyed. Again. And he had precious little time to waste on that at the moment, as he had so kindly been informed by his digital assistant, Cricket.

Colonel's response to the information, after reading it over himself, was brief and straight to the point. "Write up a message to Headmaster Nealaphh. Inform him we're on the way."

And the helper program's affirmation was likewise simply and brief. "At once, sir."

The soldier navi wasted no time in turning his routines to summoning up a vehicle to speed his progress along. Had he been anywhere near as fast as he was back home, in the cyber world, it would have been far more expedient to simply 'hoof it', as his own operator had once phrased it. And that option would have been preferable to him, all things considered. But that was just travel time he didn't have to waste. The short few minutes to summon something to speed the going along would be much preferable.

In the end, the contraption he ended up summoning into being was something he'd seen in old military design documents for powered armor; something to allow a soldier and its navi to operate in sync in the real world. One to take care of the piloting system, the other to handle the weapon systems. Feedback between one and the other, emulating what, years later, Colonel himself would come to realize was an early theory of Full Synchro. Poorly understood then, but its effectiveness still realized. And even without that, it was still a powerful piece of hardware, adaptable to virtually any environment they had tested it under, and effective on most terrain.

This particular one sported the sleek contours, angles and stark coloration that Colonel's own robotic form did, bearing the emblem of the Institute on its front, with his own Navi logo superimposed across its center. Perhaps approaching ostentatious...but hopefully it would go unnoticed. It would be serving only as a means of transport, making full use of its fabled all-terrain mobility to traverse the volatile landscape of the Ashen Steppes.

Clambering into the device's cockpit, Colonel found it perfectly matched to its pilot, and as it hissed and ground to life, rising to a standing posture, he felt momentarily distinctly off-balance; his point of view now several feet higher and the direct input into the thing making him well aware of the additional bulk and weight of the armored vehicle.

In only a few moments he had grown accustomed to it — or at least accustomed enough for his current task — and set off for the ever-smoking gate to the Steppes with all due haste, each step of the armor's massive 'boots' making a resounding, metallic boom as it came down. He wouldn't be going anywhere quietly, he though. But as the pace picked up, and it slowly went from a walk, to a job, to a full-on run, and finally the mobility jets ignited, it needed only one cacophonous stride every several seconds, hopping and bounding across the blank white expanse of the nexus with remarkable speed and surprising grace for its bulky, cumbersome form.

"Cricket. Make a note to scour my old data archives to see if I have the full plans for this. It may not be a bad idea to incorporate it into a fully combat-viable upgrade in the future."

"That would be a powerful upgrade, indeed, sir. I will make note of it."

  Summer Syntech Event Polling
Posted by: Karl Jak - 04-08-2016, 07:06 PM - Forum: Omniverse Discussion - Replies (33)

In-character post - http://omniverse-rpg.com/showthread.php?tid=5416

So it goes without saying that I want to run another Syntech event this summer.  I believe the last one was fun and successful, and I don’t think I’m the only one who enjoyed it.

That said, I don’t want to necessarily become the ‘death match producer guy.’  So what I did was I’ve designed different events for this summer.  I had some input from staff and members since last July, and while details are still being fine-tuned, I’m quite happy with all the formats.  One of the big things I’ve tried to implement in my classroom is ‘student choice.’  That is, I teach a topic to my students and I provide them with various options on how they want to assess themselves.  I’m pleased to say I have four different experiences to offer to you Omniversians.

I’m not going to give every detail about every, but I will answer say… 3 to 5 questions for each one.  I’m really excited about all the options, and I hope that the selections will help excite people as well, because I really would like to create another fun summer experience.

The possible event details are below.  Feel free to ask questions about them or make general inquiries.  In no less than 2 weeks, I’ll make a decision based on which event has the most popular support.  After that, I’ll finalize details and make them public in early May.

Option A – Battle Royale Redux

Overview – This is last year’s format with modifications and twists based upon a mixture of feedback from participants and just me wanting to try new things.

For the new members:  In this event, the participants are dropped onto an island.  Collars have robbed them of their Moves and many of their Powers.  They’ve been provided with a map of their surroundings, some supplies, and a random Weapon or Support Item.  Only one person will escape the island.  Characters move around on a grid.  Fights are decided and written out by the host.  This is equal parts mind game, luck, and pure grit.  You don’t have to be the best writer to win.

New from last year – More random events, Stat bonuses, Weapons with more functions, new desperation mechanic

Fun Times – Strategy, betrayal, mind games… Plus I like to think that this provides the most ‘openness’ in the end.  You don’t need to be the greatest writer to win.  The winner last year wasn’t the best writer in the event.

Rough Times – People got stressed out.  It happens, and I’m sorry for that.

---

Option B – ‘Battle Quest’

Overview – Contestants are dropped onto an island (this is a common theme).  Collars are placed on them to remove specific Powers.  The map is divided into five regions.  Each region hides objects that must be collected and returned to the center region.  Every few hours, characters must return to safe houses.  Once inside, two characters are ‘culled’ and forced to fight one another to escape.  These fights will be written by the writers with strict, non-extendable time limits.  Whoever loses is removed (either from death or ejection), and the quest continues until all the items are collected or only one individual remains.

Fun times – This is designed to have less stress than Option A.  F2Fs are replaced by shortened fights that are written by the players and judged by the host.  Killing is optional, as the contest can be won without anyone having to die.

Rough times - The the lack of ‘random’ elements will provide an advantage to talented writers, as fights will be determined based on quality.

Option C – ‘Conquest’

Overview – Three rival armies are vying for control of an island.  They each start off controlling a portion of the island.  Each army is led by a PC and is made up of a number of PC primes (depending on the total number of PC entrants) and many thousand secondaries that form the bulk of the army.  Each army will be able to specialize its soldiers (provide them with classes).  There will be neutral locations on the map that can be captured or won through diplomacy.  Each army will be able to construct buildings and weapons or war in their attempts to defeat the other armies.  Espionage, assassination, and treason are all possibilities.  Primes can be killed or spared. Armies will have morale that must be maintained to keep them effective.

What will your strategy be to defeat your rivals?

Fun times – I think this is a pretty novel concept that a lot of people liked when I was developing the alpha for this.

Rough Times – This will involve a lot of collaboration with your team and the host.  There’ll also be a learning curve, and much like Option A, there will be some built in ‘random events’ and other randomness.

Option D – ‘Survival Horror’

Overview – In this event, contestants crash on an island.  It is up to the survivors to figure a way off the island.  They may work together or alone.  The host will serve much like a GM in a tabletop RPG by providing prompts and events that progress the story or give clues to the primes.  Every X number of OOC days will constitute ‘a round.’  At the end of each round, the host will give one individual a prize and then eliminate one individual from the pool of contestants (this may result in death or simply mean that person is ineligible to ‘win’ at the end).

Fun times – This is the most hands off event format and provides probably the highest amount of freedom in regards to what you can (try and) do.  Plus, it’s story-driven and no one has to die unless someone wants to take the route of being the rogue or the one who suffers a psychotic break.

---

I've set it so that people may vote for up to two options if they want to.

Ask any questions you may have.  Like I said, I’ll take a handful of specific questions on each option before I put a cork in it (after all, ya gotta keep some suspense – that’s just good TV)

Thank you for your time and your interest.

Coming to Screens this Summer ;)
Posted by: Karl Jak - 04-08-2016, 06:57 PM - Forum: Dataverse Messageboards - No Replies

Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen.  My name is Karl Jak, and I’m the Chairman, CEO, and Executive Producer of the Syntech Corporation, your favorite corporation for quality television and memorabilia.  Now I’m sure many of you have been enjoying our slate of exciting winter programming like ‘Allies or Adversaries.’  With the season about to change, it’s time to announce that this summer we are aiming to produce another thrilling edition of Dante’s Abyss.

Now many of you grungy antiheroes, smug villains, and sociopathic heroes are familiar to me, but many of you look fresher than a cabana boy in springtime.  Dante’s Abyss is a premium television event centered on outwitting and outlasting your opponents, usually in blood-filled fashion.  Last summer, we all got to watch as just shy of four dozen men, women, and everything in-between faced off to be the sole survivor.  In the end, a ninja rose out of the Abyss.

…I hear he’s doing very well these days.

As we are at the forefront of quality entertainment, we don’t want to simply repeat the same program every year.  This isn’t Dante’s Idol.

That’s where you come in.  We implore all our viewers to log onto our homepage and participate in a poll to determine just what type of experience we’ll see this summer.  Will we see a modified version of last year’s illustrious battle royal?  Will you opt for something more traditional?  Will we see battling armies vie for conquest?  Or will we see our stars forced to band together to face the unknown?

Your life, your choice.

I eagerly await your decision.

Smooches.
