La Cazadora, La Soldadera, y La Soñolienta Ciudad

I walk a lonely road, the only road that I have ever known.

The woman came to a sudden stop.  In front of her, the road suddenly dropped off into a fog-laced oblivion.  Bent pieces of rebar stuck out and chunks of concrete and asphalt hung loosely above the abyss, as if some giant creature had taken a haphazard bite out of the world.

Behind her, she heard the familiar shuffle of deformed feet on pavement.  The chorus of wet thumps and the haggard breath of the creatures hounded her wherever she went.

My shadow’s the only one that walks beside me.

But hadn’t she been in this spot before?  This felt too familiar.

Reaching down to her belt, the woman popped the clasp on her sidearm and closed her slender fingers around the grip of the Desert Eagle.  She wanted to cry, but there was no ammunition in her tear ducts.  Even if that wasn’t the case, the meds didn’t let her get overly emotional.  As she slipped the gun free, she caught the sight of the fog that seemed to be thickening around her.  Through the haze, dark shapes shifted and shuddered.

My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating.

At least four of them out there in the haze.  They traveled in packs, though.  Sordid mobs of trembling monsters that sputtered bile and gnashed their teeth like famished hyenas.  Someone could usually outrun or outmaneuver them, but once they had the scent, they didn’t stop their pursuit until put out of their misery.

And even if you slew a dozen of them, there were always more of them.  They were but one of the many, innumerable revenants that haunted the streets and boulevards of this desolate city of broken dreams and sleepless nights.

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me.

Her finger slipped around the trigger as she lifted the gun and pressed the end of the barrel against her temple.

In the distance, she heard the beginning wails of the air raid sirens.

Till then, I walk alone.

The rapport of a fifty-caliber handgun rang through the streets of Silent Hill.

***

Mireya Vasquez limped into the grocery store and pulled the broken automatic door shut behind her.  A beat later, she slid a broken broom handle through the door’s pull bars.  Just a split-second later, something smacked into the doors, causing both to sag inward a few inches before the wooden shaft kept them from opening any further.

Stumbling away into the darkness of the store, Mireya blinked a few times as her eyes adjusted.

“A la verga,” she muttered beneath her breath as she looked around the interior of the building.  “Where’d you go?”  Without responding, the woman’s companion stepped out from behind an aisle and waved her hand.  “How are you so fast?”  Mireya asked once she was close enough.

“High school and college athletics,” the human replied.  “Track and volleyball.  Cardio works wonders.”

Mireya shook her head.  “I spent two years hunting and trapping in the Tangled Green.  You ever chase down and bag a shoveltusk?”

The other woman smiled but offered no rebuttal to her companion.  “That’s not going to hold forever.  They noise will attract more of the shamblers and probably a few other things we definitely don’t want to dance with tonight.  Can you spot anyway out of this place?”

The half-night elf gave a short nod before leaning around to get a better view of the rear half of the store. Mostly ransacked, the supermercado stretched back for another thirty yards.  If there was any back exit, Mireya didn’t have a clear line of sight on it.  “Nada.  Need to look more.”  She whispered as she retrieved her kukri from her belt and started to creep her way into the back of the market.

As they reached the back wall of the building, Mireya swept left and then right before spotting the outline of a door in the shadows.  “There.”  She whispered as a loud crash at the front of the store told them that it was time to move.

  Werewolves Game Night?
Posted by: Amaterasu - 05-04-2017, 03:25 AM - Forum: The Arcade - Replies (21)

I've noted this in the chat before, but I thought I'd ask a broader audience by posting a thread: would anyone be interested in a game (or a few) of Werewolves, through Discord or Skype? The ideal time for this would likely be on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon/evening as fewer of us will be working, but I'm sure we can find something that fits.

For those of you who don't know Werewolves, here's a brief description:
A group of players form the "village", with each player receiving a role that is kept secret from the others. Some of these players (usually ~2 per 10 players) are secretly werewolves. One player is the Game Master who controls the game flow and narrates.
At night, the werewolves decide on a villager to kill, and during the day the villagers debate on who could be a werewolf, and vote for one person to lynch. The goal of the werewolves is to kill all the villagers and the goal of the villagers is to find and kill the werewolves before they all die. It's a game of trickery and lies.

While the game is meant to be played as a board game, it could also function on Skype/Discord! The more players we could get, the better the game would be, so if you're interested please reply.

  Character Switch - Veritas Night
Posted by: James Knight - 05-03-2017, 08:49 PM - Forum: Joining - Replies (5)

As this is a switch from Sombra to Veritas Night, yet another OC of mine I have done the mathematical calculations. I would have 10,000 OM to spend instead of the 5000 normally associated with a character. If this is a few days early, I apologize. I wished to get it up as soon as I could close to time so I didn't end up forgetting the idea.

Character name:  Veritas Night

Character source:   Power Rangers - OC

Character history:

Veritas Night was one of the students at the Wind Ninja Academy when Lothar was still a threat. Blamed about what Lothar had done Veritas was kicked out of the academy and given the boot by some of the rangers there. From there he started to travel the world, and he learned. Going to the school of Pai Zhua he learned about the animal spirits they could summon and learned how to manifest each one of them as armor on his body. Traveling to the world of Aquitar it was there he learned about their telepathically controlled Zords and studied the technology so he could build his own. Upon returning to Earth he even spent some time in the Shiba House attempting to learn the power of the Samurai Rangers for himself. Yet none of those skills made him any happier than he was. They made him more miserable because he couldn't succeed at them.

It wasn't until he turned twenty one that he learned of a greater power that could allow him to succeed where he wanted. The power of the Heylin Dragon Seal. Seeking out the power on Earth he eventually found it in the ruins of an old temple. The seal when touched by him became a cellphone capable of summoning an enchanted suit of Heylin Armor onto his body for his own personal use. Still, it wasn't enough because even with that power he knew he could be defeated far too easily by anyone with half a mind to do so. Seeking out the power of many enchanted items, and also augmenting his body with state of the art bionic technology and cybernetics he knew it still wasn't enough for him.

What was missing was the power of a ranger. So Veritas spent time toiling and working to give himself the powers of an actual ranger at his disposal. Eventually he nearly succeeded, but his death in the process is what brought him to the Omniverse.

Its damage it does would be rather high when it hits an opponent as it explodes and fills the area with flame. The flames also will set an opponent on fire for about 5 seconds.   April Monthly Accolades (Until May 20th)
Posted by: Dark Link - 05-03-2017, 05:35 PM - Forum: Bookkeeping Archive - Replies (17)

You are here and so am I. Welcome to the April edition of our Monthly Accolades!

For those of you who are unaware, the Accolades involve nominating (and later, voting for) those who have outdone themselves in a particular area each month. For variety's sake, the categories for each month may be different.

You have until May 11th to nominate your choices. After that, we will proceed to the voting phase where members will vote among the two individuals with the most nominations for each category. An exception to this is if someone manages to get 5+ more nominations than the runner-up, in which case that person becomes the winner by default.

If you wish to participate, think of who stood out the most in a particular category this month and post your choice, along with a 2-3 sentence long explanation, in this thread. You are not barred from nominating your own characters/threads, nor do you have to fill out all the categories.

The winners will become this month's "Community Stars". And what benefits does this bring? Here is an explanation, courtesy of Alex:

(07-26-2016, 11:34 AM)Alex Wrote: As part of being voted as a Community Star/User of the Month (I use the terms interchangeable mainly because Community Star is less formal-sounding than User of the Month), these members gain a color (you must select this in your User CP) and access to the Omni-World R&D forum.  In the past this was my pseudo-private forum, but it's now a place for myself and others to discuss the Omniverse.  This is also the meeting place/brainstorming area for Story Aides and Story Guides, so for all intents and purposes, winning an accolade lets you become a pseudo-Story Aide for the duration of your reign.

Forum access is for the month following a member's selection as a Community Star, and this is irregardless of which 'accolade' you were selected for.

And the categories are:

‘Best’ Character – Which character has you engaged the most?

‘Best’ Writer – Which writer wowed you the most?

Most Helpful – A staffer or a member who gave you amazing feedback on a story or was simply there to help you sort out some of your problems.

Rising Star – Which up-and-coming member stands at the crème of the crop? (must have joined within the last month and a half or have less than 8000 OM)

'Best' Story – What story did you find most riveting/entertaining?

'Best' NPC – What non-player character (can be a site, personal, or story NPC) entertained you the most (for whatever reason). Please note who the 'owner' of said NPC is, just in case I am not familiar with them.

Purple Ribbon - Consider this a bonus category for nominating someone who, while they may not be the best and have all the twitter followers, you believe deserves to be recognized for what they bring the the Omniverse. (The winner must be a DIFFERENT person than last month's winner; the March winner was Omni)

Also, my gratitudes to Alex, who briefly took over the reigns over the Accolades for the March vote.

  Regeneration of SP
Posted by: Handsome Jack - 05-02-2017, 07:14 PM - Forum: Omniverse Discussion - Replies (35)

Probably not allowed and has already been answered, but....

Would it be possible for Regeneration (Basic or Advanced) and/or Healing (in conjunction with a Move) to restore SP? Obviously it would require more HP to regain SP than the opposite (so Regenerators couldn't abuse), and you wouldn't be able to Regen past your Character Level Limit. But is it theoretically possible to do, in a style of a character burning their life force to exceed their limits and whatnot?

So does anyone else play this?

I play two or three times a week with an internet friend and some members from his IRL circle.  He's about to start a night job, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to see if anyone here plays.

I'm a Silver IV player, for those who play ranked.  Otherwise, I mostly just play to have fun and get a kick out of stomping people.

My name there is 'The Jade Fiend'.

  Summer Syntech Polling
Posted by: Karl Jak - 05-02-2017, 06:01 PM - Forum: Omniverse Discussion - Replies (60)

So two years running, I’ve hosted a pseudo-competitive event between June and August.  Call it Dante’s Abyss or the ‘Summer Syntech’ Saga, since I toss out both as names.  Anyway, I’d like to host another event under the Syntech banner this summer as well, but I feel like the current member base is a lot different from that 14 months ago.  So I’ll back track to provide some background before I get to the point of this message.

If you’ve participated last year or already know the backstory, skip the spoiler tag.
Two years ago, I hosted what can best be described as the Omniverse equivalent of Battle Royale/the Hunger Games.  45(!) primes were deposited onto an island.  They were given collars that interfered with their normal powers.  In return, they were given a randomized weapon.  Writers could move their prime along a grid map, either hunting down their foes or avoiding them (and the dead zones that spread across the island).  The mission was to be the last one standing on the island.  At its core, it was a writing contest/writing event, but the normal Omniverse script was flipped in that the players had no control over how fights turned out.  Whenever they ran into an enemy, the fight was written by me, with a result determined by how they had written beforehand, their current gear, current health, and any SP they wanted to spend.

The whole thing was designed to be a spectacle, and I’d wager those who are still around would say it achieved that end.  It was also incredibly taxing on people, both the pace of the writing and what I’ll call the ‘out of character tomfoolery’ aspect.  Alliances were made.  Alliances were shattered.  People were betrayed.  All the stuff that’s fun to read but awful to live through for the victims.

Last year, I let those interested in the competition vote on their preferred event.  The choice was a storyline saga that saw a group of primes crash land on a strange island in the Danteverse.  Fog impeded their powers and they were forced to explore an increasingly hellish place in order to escape the island.  Several primes did survive.  The competitive aspect wasn’t explicit (there was only one fight between PC characters).  Rather it was implicit, in that people were ‘eliminated from final prize contention’ every few days.  In the end, one person ‘won’ but many survived and most of the final crop gained some degree of fame.
So I’d like to host another event this summer.  Just like last year, I’d like at least 15-20 interested parties.  Just like last year, I wanted to provide people with a choice of what event they’d most like to participate in.  Regardless of the option, all of them would start around June 3rd.

It’s set up so that everyone can vote for two options they are interested in.  Feel free to ask questions if you have them.

I hope you’ll join me.  The last three years, my work schedule’s been increasingly hellish, so this is something that I always look forward to.  I don't think anyone would say I don't pour myself into these.

---

Option A – Battle Royale

Overview – This is the 2015 format with modifications and twists based upon a mixture of feedback from participants and just me wanting to try new things.

In this event, the participants are dropped onto an island.  Collars have robbed them of their Moves and many of their Powers.  Primes will receive bonuses based on stats.  They’ve been provided with a map of their surroundings, some supplies, and a random Weapon or Support Item.  Only one person will escape the island.  Characters move around on a grid.  Fights are decided and written out by the host.  Random events may benefit or impair you.  Teaming may benefit you.  Or it might doom you.  This is equal parts mind game, luck, and pure grit.  You don’t have to be the best technical writer to win.

Fun Times – Strategy, betrayal, mind games… Plus I like to think that this provides the most ‘openness’ in the end.  You don’t need to be the greatest writer to win.

Rough Times – People got stressed out.  It happens, and I’m sorry for that.

Timeline – Less than a month, including a 5-day preshow

---

Option B – ‘Battle Quest’

Overview – Contestants are dropped onto an island (this is a common theme).  Collars are placed on them to remove specific Powers.  The map is divided into five regions.  Each region hides objects that must be collected and returned to the center region.  Every few (in-character) hours, characters must return to safe houses.  Once inside, two characters are ‘culled’ and forced to fight one another to escape.  These fights will be written by the writers with strict, non-extendable time limits.  Whoever loses is removed (either from death or ejection), and the quest continues until all the items are collected or only one individual remains.

Fun times – This is designed to have less stress than Option A.  Writers will get to go head-to-head with their peers, relying solely on their talent rather than some of the dumb luck mechanics that are in Option A.  Killing is optional, as the contest can be won without anyone having to die.

Rough times - The lack of ‘random’ elements will provide an advantage to talented writers, as fights will be determined based on quality.

Timeline – Between a month and six weeks.

Option C – ‘Conquest’

Overview – Three rival armies are vying for control of an island.  They each start off controlling a portion of the island.  Each army is led by a PC and is made up of a number of PC primes (depending on the total number of PC entrants) and a few thousand secondaries that form the bulk of the army.  Each army will be able to specialize its soldiers (provide them with classes).  There will be neutral locations on the map that can be captured or won through diplomacy.  Each army will be able to construct buildings and weapons of war in their attempts to defeat the other armies.  Espionage, assassination, and treason are all possibilities.  Primes can be killed or spared. Armies will have morale that must be maintained to keep them effective.

What will your strategy be to defeat your rivals?

Fun times – I think this is a pretty novel concept.  I’ve been tweaking the alpha over the last two years.

Rough Times – This will involve a lot of collaboration with your team and the host.  There’ll also be a learning curve, and much like Option A, there will be some built in ‘random events’ and other randomness.

Timeline – 2 months, although who knows, it could be shorter, but I’m expecting attrition. This is the only one that won't have hard time limits for posting.

Option D – ‘Survival’

Overview – In this event, contestants crash on an island.  It is up to the survivors to figure a way off the island.  They may work together or alone.  The host will serve much like a GM in a tabletop RPG by providing prompts and events that progress the story or give clues to the primes.  Every X number of OOC days will constitute ‘a round.’  At the end of each round, the host will give one individual a prize and then eliminate one individual from the pool of contestants (this may result in death or simply mean that person is ineligible to ‘win’ at the end).

Note – We did this last summer, so if this is picked again, it would be something totally different, story-wise.

Fun times – This is the most hands-off event format and provides probably the highest amount of freedom in regards to what you can (try and) do.  Plus, it’s story-driven and no one has to die unless someone wants to take the route of being the rogue or the one who suffers a psychotic break.

Timeline – This event last year took… almost three months?  It was long but it wasn’t punishing, since people only had to post once every few days.

Say someone plays  "Jason Todd - The Red Hood"  would someone be allowed to make a different version of the same character named for example "Jason Wayne"  or something along those lines? It is something i have been thinking of, but am not entirely sure about. As such I need the answer within a few days, as I'll be swapping out Sombra for a new char. Depending on the answer, I may or may not use this idea.

  Rise to power interrupted [Nexus]
Posted by: Lord Drakkon - 05-02-2017, 04:08 PM - Forum: The Nexus - Replies (1)

Tommy's thoughts were a blur, if there were any at all. All was numb and he felt as though he was surrounded by constant flow of water that was cold nor warm. A tingling covered his skin and he lifted his hands to his helmet covered head.

He found it was gone and he groaned aloud clutching his face and shaking his head. "Where...what the fuck." he thought as he  attempted to stand and look around only to find himself in darkness.

Darkness surrounded him and he cursed quietly and attempted to take a step forward, but found that his legs weighed a ton.
Ahead of him he saw something glowing...no, not something.
Someone.

The outline of a small figure, grinning at him. If one could call the demented looking action a smile.

"Son of a...is Rita behind this? Or Zordon?!?!" he thought angrily attempting to lay out a plan of attack.

On cue, the figure shook his head and spoke, acknowledging through its tone that he knew what the young man was thinking, or he had read Tommy's expression.

“My name is Omni. This is not the world you know. This is the Omniverse. You interest me, so I have made you part of it. The Omniverse is a place that reflects the wishes of those who are part of it. But! There are rules. I will explain them only once, so listen carefully.”

Omni stretched out a hand towards a still stunned Tommy, placing a glimmering orb in which all the colors of the rainbow coalesce. As the interesting creature spoke, Tommy took the sphere and tried to figure out what it was.

Again, the unknown person spoke. His voice echoed slightly in the void like area, and Tommy took a moment to look around.

“This is Omnilium. It’s what ties the Omniverse together. Without it, you are nothing. With it, anything you desire can be yours. But you will need more than this. If you desire it enough, you will find it. You will find that using it comes naturally. Just think of what you desire most." stated the being.

Tommy lifted his eyes instantly and nearly glared at the being. Was he playing him for a fool? Or was he speaking the truth? Was the bastard working for Zordon or Rita?

As if sensing the man's confusion and doubts, Omni continued on with his speech, “You will not be alone in the Omniverse. There are others. Of course, they, too desire Omnilium. Do not fear death. For as long as you interest me, you will be reborn.".

The near glare he had started to turn on the unknown deity had turned into one of surprise and near awe. "Rebirth? You have the power to grant life? Can you take it away? This...this Omnilium, can it grant me the same abilities?" inquired Tommy.
The questions flying from his mouth one after another causing his chest to heave violently as he was forced to fight for a quick breath.

“That’s all you need to know right now. You’ll figure out the rest soon enough. I’ll be watching … and waiting.”  stated Omni, his mischievous glowing smile and face never changing as the darkness faded away.
