Ascendancy (The Territory/Domination system at long last!)
Posted by: Omni - 08-16-2014, 10:09 AM - Forum: Omniverse Discussion - Replies (3)

When I created the Omniverse, there was one big system that was unfinished. I hinted that it would be out there eventually, but since it was a long-term goal for players it wasn't an immediate priority. I'm talking, of course, about the territory/domination system. It's something I toyed with on Another Destiny, and with the Omniverse it's something I wanted and even, in a way, 'built in' from the very inception of the idea. I mean, every RPG wants to say that, right? That you can eventually take over an area? So cool!

It's taken a long time to get it right. I toyed with, and threw away, more ideas than I can count. Ultimately, what I came up with was pretty simple, and based more around IC logic and storylines. When you make something too much about PvP, you start to feel conflict between the best OOC strategy and what your character would do. It also becomes very boring to write if you end up fighting over the same areas back and forth like a tug-of-war, like what many online games do (incidentally, it gets boring there too pretty fast). At the end of the day, we just wanna read good epic stories. The conflict is just a backdrop for that.

So without further ado, let me introduce Recognition and Ascendancy.

Writing example: (Taken from a dead DBZ RP site which I participated for about a month before it died and this RP is still saved on my computer)

The sky was dark, ominous. The middle of the night revealed no light and very little color. The dry soil was cracked with exhaustion, the skies above looming menacingly over the parched land below. The sky was black, but in the horizon there was a deep, violent shade of purple blooming on the skyline. It was the color of power, the color of thunder. The earth shook tremendously as the first rumble was unleashed. The air seemed charged with electricity, ready to zap at any moment. The entire atmosphere seemed to be supercharged, ready to light up into a chaotic frenzy. There was a tinge of desperation in any inhabitants in the area. But there was one very bold individual who did not flee. Knelt down, shadowed against the black of the night, Grantz remained poised and tense, her body stiff and unmoving. His bulky figure was mostly hidden by the darkness around him, but in a flash of lightning he was illuminated sharply. His gold eyes were shut.

The power here was unimaginable. The power here was beautiful. The power here was lustful. It wanted something - everything. It did not give, it took. It was unafraid of anything. It shattered everything. The very charge of this place made the dark spirit freeze, his muscles locked together as he inhaled the air itself. He sampled electricity on the breeze, a warning of what was to come. He let a slow breath squeeze out of his tight lungs, and the drums began playing as the thunder began shaking the land around him. The very force of it was unimaginable. He had chosen the right place - the perfect place - the best place he could've to come tonight. Because he was feeling power hungry.

There was deadening silence.

BOOM. The earth trembled. The sky shuddered. And his eyes snapped open to reveal perfectly golden irises and pupils dilated to the highest degree. With a movement akin to a dancer, he leapt from his tightened position, launching himself upon two firmly planted feet. The sky seemed to be close to shattering - the force of the thunder now was unthinkable - lightening flashed, revealing his bulky, illuminated shape, eyes wide with some otherworldly power.. Power which he wanted - power which he consumed, power which revitalized him, power which made him stronger than he ever had been before. In this land, in this chaotic land, he was in his element. His lips peeled apart in a smirk to reveal white, dangerous teeth. Here, he would get what he wanted. Here, he would revitalize himself, dipping into depths of his power. Tonight, Grantz would be reborn.

"Let loose..", he whispered, his voice rising above the winds circulating around him in what was to be a terrible thunder storm. He tilted his head heavenwards, welcoming the onslaught of lightning that ripped across the sky. He lifted his hands up, as if to beckon the raw electricity, in it's purest form down to him. He growled, his voice low. "You understand me. You are like me. We are one. This place - this place – this power- I need it - let me have it -" He jumped away with sharp, cultivated movements. The thunder screamed in the sky. The power Grantz had long since felt was building in him like a time bomb. He was about to explode. He could hold no more. He had never felt more alive, or more dangerous, in his entire life. The thunder bellowed. The sky trembled. The earth cried. "If you do not know me, heavens, you know me now!" he growled madly in the gale-like wind up into the sky. "I am Grantz," he whispered. The world around him seemed to still for a breath. "And there is nothing to stop me now."

[Exemplary] Family of Steel - Carved from the Blighted Oak
Posted by: Proto Man - 08-13-2014, 12:01 AM - Forum: The Tangled Green - Replies (20)

The damage he’d sustained in the struggle with Cell Delta had severely damaged several of Proto Man’s systems.  Chief among the inoperable functions and applications was the mapping and GPS program.  Those injuries, plus the various surface abrasions and a dead hand, meant that the android quickly became lost as he tried to navigate through the soot-stained landscape.  To make the situation more difficult, his right hip joint had been fractured in the battle, which reduced his mobility to a glorified limp.

Even so, Proto Man pressed on, feeling somewhat comforted in the notion that he wouldn’t have to hunt down fifteen rogue Robot Masters.   Was it possible that they’d all be like Heat Man?  At the thought of the dead machine, the preteen looked down at the Proto Buster, which still stood primed and ready to immolate anything that tried to stall his retreat.

Every now and again, a volcano would erupt and flood the entire area in darkness and ash.  Each time, Proto Man fought an urge to go investigate the after-effects and make notes about the environment inside and outside of the volcano.  Although he’d never been so interested in volcanos before, the preteen android fought the urges and didn’t bother to overthink them as he continued to head in what he thought was south.

Given the fact that his clock and wifi were also malfunctioning, Proto Man had no idea how long he half-walked, half-shambled across the Ashen Plains.  By the time he saw the gate on the horizon, most of his body was caked over with dirt and soot.  Lifting his functioning hand to his eyes, Proto Man lifted his sunglasses up from his eyes long enough to verify that he wasn’t seeing a distortion.

It’s a gate… but it doesn’t look the same.  Shrugging off the urge to analysis the inter-verse gateway, the prototype Robot Master slowly walked the rest of the way over to the doorway and slipped through.

On the other side, Proto Man found himself standing in a clearing atop a small hill.  All in front of him, the hill slopped down and was swallowed by a dense jungle.  From the foreboding silence of the Ashen Plains, the preteen now found himself assailed by a cacophony of noise, ranging from screeching bugs and cawing birds to the roar of a nearby river.

“This… this isn’t where I started,” Proto Man muttered as he looked up into the sky.  The black and gray clouds were gone, and in their place, the sky was a pleasant shade of blue.  “Oh well,” the android added as he began to limp down the hill into the jungle.

From a few yards away, a synthetic creature watched the prototype.  The metal snake had a vastly oversized head with big red eyes that glowed faintly as it observed the other machine.

  Secondary Character Question
Posted by: Deadpool - 08-10-2014, 06:31 AM - Forum: Help Desk - Replies (14)

Hey, so I have a question concerning secondary characters...

Could I make my secondary character part of my primary? (two characters stuck in one person).

I wouldn't be using this to have them talk or anything like that.

it would be more like:

Player A falls asleep.

Player B wakes up from sleep.

Player B falls asleep

Player A wakes up from sleep.

  Fountain of Old Biddy
Posted by: Monkey D. Luffy - 08-06-2014, 05:56 PM - Forum: The Nexus - Replies (3)

"...ffy..." a faint voice resonated.

"...uuffy..." again, less muffled, yet indistinct.

"LUUUFFY!!" the jarring voice quacked clear as a whistle.

"WAH!!" the boy shrieked, jolting up from his slumber, encumbered in stupor. Beads of sweat licked his neck as his panting came to a still. That voice...all too familiar, yet impossible to be real. The person he cared for most crying out his name. No, a dream; a nightmare.

"Ah...?" the rubber boy murmured as he peered forward, the ocean of nothingness washing away his befuddlement, swallowing him in curiosity.

Luffy took to his feet, his head still fuzzy. He teetered a moment, his balance wavering. If he didn't know any better he'd assume to have been asleep for days. Wait...he didn't know any better. He didn't even know where the hell he was. The last remnant of memory he could muster was preparing for a journey to reunite with his beloved crew, and was now amidst a sea of boundless white without a soul in sight.

"Oooohhh!" Straw Hat's eyes glittered in awe, marveling at the towering structure before him. Water splayed in all directions from the peak, trickling down layer by layer.

Tak Tak Tak Tak!

Luffy's footsteps echoed to the inconceivable edges of the blank canvas as he beelined for the fountain. Not particularly spectacular, but it was the coolest thing in the immediate area; and it didn't take much to entertain little rubber brain. As he drew close enough, a memory sparked to life within him. Memories of an infinitely encompassing dark void, in the midst of which something spoke to him. No, someone. This was not the voice from before.

“My name is Omni. This is not the world you know. This is the Omniverse. You interest me, so I have ma...”

"Oy, do you poop?" Luffy interrupted and shot an index finger, rudely disregarding the being's incessant jabber.

"..."

Proceeding on, the bizarre creature manifested a vibrant glowing orb in front of straw hat. It's limitless color a stark contrast to the stranger's drab appearance.

"WOAHHH! LOOKS YUMMY!" Luffy proclaimed excitedly, shining stars replacing his pupils as drool spilled from his maw. He shoveled the vivid sphere wholly into his mouth, a large lump forming in his throat as he forced the ball of light down.

"BLEGH!" the pirate rejected in disgust, spewing saliva upon the incandescent floor. The alleged master of the realms explained to straw hat what he'd been gifted with, however Luffy was uninterested, occupied scoping out the landscape, or lack thereof, when far-off archways caught his eye.

Sheen!

A glint of light danced around the pirate captain before fading beneath his scarred abdomen. He had coalesced with the aforementioned Omnilium. Gazing into his open palm, Luffy balled a fist, sensing the lifeblood of the realm flowing through his veins.

"Welcome to the Fountain of Infinity. Here is where your prior journey ends, and new journey begins. The choices you make from here on out will dec..."

"Ehh? Fountain of Old Biddy? Shishishi, what a stupid name!" he interjected, mocking the embodiment of omnipotence.

"Oy, Pasty Boy, where is this place? Why did you bring me here? I need to go meet up with my crew now." Straw Hat queried, insulting the white silhouette.

"..."

It was in that instance he remembered, his crew! Reaching deeply into his pockets, Luffy extracted a handful of white slips, each sporting the individual names of his comrades.

"Zoro...Nami...Sanji...Usopp...Chopper...Robin...Franky... Brook," he catalogued, laying the paper fragments out in front of him. Several moments came and went without a shred of movement between the Vivre Cards. Luffy grimaced in chagrin, swiping up the slips with a single sweep of his palm.

Suddenly, the rubberman felt a rustle inside his shirt pocket. Digging into his cardigan, he removed a blank paper shard. Unlike the others, this one wriggled wildly, pointing toward the southwest doorway. The nameless Vivre Card had imparted a destination for the pirate captain. For the time being, it was apparent he could not return to his own reality, thus his only hope of escape was to continue forward.
