The goblin trembled, shaking its club at Samus. It wore a look somewhere between fear and indignation, and at only two feet tall the metal woman towered over it. Her arm cannon was blazing with an orange glow, the barrel pointed directly at her small, green adversary.
“Stop.” She said. “Surrender.”
“Gnargl!” replied the goblin, with another trembling shake of its club. Its fallen brethren were all around it, covered in purple blood.
Samus analysed the situation. This goblin was a secondary – mortal. But he’d tried to kidnap another secondary – the child of one of the villagers. To eat. To eat was one thing, but these goblins had a particular taste for sapient flesh, for some reason. Killing them was the correct path.
Nonetheless, this goblin was at Samus’s mercy. So she said again. “Surrender.”
The goblin threw the club at Samus and dived for her leg. It barely moved before it was a smudge on the floor.
The villagers clapped and cheered. Samus turned, raised her arm cannon in acknowledgement that all was safe. When she’d come to the village they’d been as fearful of her as the goblins. Most had run, and some had even tried to attack her. Now they cheered.
Samus walked to her tri-wheeler and mounted it. She’d tried fitting in by summoning a large reptilian mount – a geshilin – when she’d first arrived to Camelot, but it hadn’t worked out. Somewhere out there it was probably still running around, eating wolves and rabbits with its hyperactive metabolism. Or else the orcs and goblins had taken it to make into stew. Either way, she hadn’t heard of any villages being attacked by a large hyperactive lizard, so it was fine.
It had been only a few days since her battle against the Rathalos and her humiliating defeat at the hands of Cindy, the monster hunter. It had been a very long time since Samus had been bested by anyone, and it stung. She hadn’t realised it, but the years of being known as the best bounty hunter in the galaxy had swollen her pride. It had occurred to her that perhaps she’d gotten cocky, but that wasn’t why. She’d gotten too trusting, that was why. She’d allowed the brief camaraderie of a battle fought together make her let her guard down.
It reminded her of when she’d fought the final war against Dark Samus. Briefly it had been fun, to work with other hunters. But how long had it taken before their own weakness had betrayed them, led them to fall down the path of corruption and turn on her? There was only one person she could ever truly trust, and that was herself.
Not even Adam can ever be truly trusted. She thought.
She thought of the kid and felt a bit sorry. Proto Man. He had potential. He’d saved her life. She definitely owed him one.
These thoughts rolled around in Samus’s mind as she rumbled towards the Gate. It took hours before the standing stones that signalled its presence could be seen. She closed in, stepped off her bike and desummoned it to its component Omnilium.
Later, Camelot, she thought, and stepped through.

I woke up with a start. Someone was hammering the door to the flat. I looked around wildly – Jimmy and Kevin were up and about. I could see Kevin’s back, facing the door with his arms outstretched. Jimmy was behind him, hunched and making whimpering, sobbing noises.
I swung my legs off of the sofa, shaking. I was embarrassed that I’d fallen asleep before the kids I was supposed to be babysitting. And guilty. Was this karma? My limbs still felt dead from sleep, but I forced myself to stand. As I did so, the door hammered again, hard.
“Let me in, kids!”
I gasped, and my tension melted a little. It was the kids’ mother. She hadn’t called, and hadn’t meant to be back until tomorrow. I took a step to the door.
“Don’t!” screamed Kevin, freezing me. I suddenly noticed what he was holding. A silver pistol, far too big for his hands, pointed at the door. It unnerved me how steady his hands were. Beneath that little mop of brown hair was a determined, detached expression. I wondered where he’d got that. Beside him, Jimmy was clearly terrified. He wasn’t quite holding onto Kevin, but he was close behind, and tears were streaming down his cheeks.
The door hammered again and their mother’s voice came, sweetly. “Kids!” it came, drawn out questioningly. “Please just open the door.” BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG.
Why was she hammering? I looked from the door nervously back to Kevin. He didn’t look at me, eyes trained on the door.
I didn’t know their mother well, but she’d always been polite. Normal. Nothing to suggest that she was any different. The kids were kids, but as far as kids go some of the most well-behaved I’ve ever met. They’d been happy to occupy themselves with the TV until bedtime. I had just been about to put them to sleep, that must have been when I’d nodded off.
As my mind unclouded, harsh sensibility began to regain control. This was completely out of hand. “Give me the gun,” I said to Kevin. I extended my hand and reached towards him.
“You don’t understand,” he said. His voice didn’t crack. ‘Isn’t he only ten?’ questioned my tired mind. “That’s not our mom.”
I frowned, shushing the little sudden drop in my stomach that felt a little bit like panic. “Kevin,” I said in a slow, measured tone. “That IS your mother.”
His voice did crack this time. “It’s NOT!” His eyes moved away from the door, just for a fraction of a second, to mine, and in that second I saw a very scared little boy. Not fear of being reprimanded, not even fear of being belted. It was the kind of fear that kids shouldn’t know about at that age. His eyes flicked back to the door and he rearranged his grip on the gun, shifting his stance and licking his lips. His voice came again in a tiny whisper. “That’s not mom. That’s not mom.”
I didn’t know what to do. The hammering came again. I couldn’t believe how strong she was. It sounded almost like it was going to break down. Why was nobody else in the building coming? My mind was breaking down under the possibilities. Something was very wrong.
But I was the adult. I couldn’t just go back inside and hide under a blanket, as much as I might have wanted to. ‘There’s a simple way to solve this’, piped up my rational mind. ‘Go look in the peephole’.
I looked at it, and then back to Kevin and Jimmy, and voiced my intentions. “I’m going to go and look through the door,” I said quietly. Why was I being so quiet? My rational brain chided me, but I shut it up.
Kevin looked like he was trying to say something. He started a word, then trailed off. As I stepped forward to the door, he inched a little closer with me, as though every centimetre were paper-thin ice that might suddenly shatter. The door was only a few feet away, but it felt like no-man’s land. I didn’t want to take those steps, but I did. My heart thudded as I stopped in front of it. BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG. The last thundering blow was punctuated, as though they were trying to break THROUGH the door. I’d never noticed before, but it was incredibly study. The chain rattled with every blow. I let out a quiet breath as I stepped up to it. The thudding stopped. I moved the peep hole aside.
I screamed. I screamed and I screamed and I screamed. My feet kicked back and I scrambled back across the hallway on all fours, gibbering. Jimmy cried and moved out of my way as I got back behind the line he’d formed. Kevin stepped back in front of us, white as a sheet.
“I told you,” he said quietly.
The hammering started again. “Let me in! Let me in!” it came, that voice just like their mother’s but different. I hadn’t noticed the subtle different before, but now it terrified me. Had it been their mother, behind that door? Had it been something else? I felt like I was in a dream. A nightmare. It had to be. I held hands with Jimmy, and found myself crying with him.
I woke with a start. The lights were out. I was on the sofa, covered in a blanket. Those sweet kids must have covered me after I fell asleep. My breath rattled out of my chest in a sigh of relief. I got my icy feet to the floor, the fresh terror of the dream subsiding, and shakily walked to the lightswitch.
The doorbell went. I must have jumped almost through my skin. My heart was racing again. I felt supremely silly. I glanced towards the boys’ bedrooms before walking into the hallway and turning on the light. “Hello?” I called.
It was the mother. “It’s just me,” she said. “I got done sooner than expected, so I’m home a little early. Will you take off the chain?”
“Yeah,” I said with a smile on my face. I was sure that my cheeks were flushed with embarrassment. Before I took off the chain, I opened the peephole and looked through.
It was their mother. Something inside me unclenched, I took a breath, and I took the chain off the door, opening it. She came inside, taking little steps as she made noises of tired relief. “How were the kids?” she asked, “alright?”
I thought back to the dream nervously. “They were angels,” I laughed.
“I’ve just gotta go to the bathroom, and then if you like you can go home,” said the kids’ mother. “I’ll pay you for tonight, is that okay?”
“Sounds great,” I said.
She went into the bathroom and I settled down onto the couch, pulling the blanket into a pile on my lap. I made to collect my belongings from the table. I noticed that my phone was blinking and checked the messages.
There was one from a minute ago. It read:
“Hope the kids are okay. See you tomorrow."
The bathroom door opened.

Are the Spiritual Attunement and Spiritual Enlightenment upgrades a sequence or can you purchase Enlightenment and just not be able to astrally project? I ask because Harry can physically enter the spirit world in the Dresden Files books, but he can't just send a projection. He has to physically enter the Nevernever. So, I was wondering if I'd have to buy Attunement before Enlightenment or if I can just save up the 2k to get only Enlightenment.

Kidding. I killed just one. But it was a Stormtrooper. Now I'd imagine the Empire doesn't take kindly to their Imperials getting turned into charred corpses by wayward Primes. So I was thinking of having a bounty set up for my character, Vitruvius. Anyone in Coruscant (obviously) could come after me. I thought it was a more fun idea than making an "Open" thread and we all meet awkwardly and stand around twiddling our thumbs. Any takers?

A skyline of remarkable height painted the outline of the metropolis. The architecture was like something right out of an Arthur C. Clarke novel, built to maximum efficiency and simplicity. Yet in the simple design of the buildings and skyscrapers he could see how this city would be something beautiful even if it seemed totalitarian in execution. The life forms were all of differing sizes, colors and alien to one another. Given that his experience with biological sentient life was strictly the human species, seeing varying bipedal and even quadrupedal intelligence was something of a shock to his systems. The cliché that kept prompting was “Does not compute.”
Ironic. True definition. He was a highly sophisticated piece of technology that had been created using the cutting edge of his time. He had been the most advanced creation where he came from and yet this technological wonder before him was beyond his current comprehension. The best analogy he could give would be if a creation of Asimov met life beyond humans and technology greater than what it had been created with. All the storage of information and the full capacity of everything it had been imbued with was suddenly obsolete all at once. No computer could process so much information all at once and not full the sluggish pull of too many processes running simultaneously.
Vitruvius had to start shutting down bits and pieces of his perceptors just so he could focus on more important things. Such as his immediate vicinity. A docking bay built specifically for the gate with two different guards on this side. A pathway to the main sector of the city. Less life forms. Sharper focus. Better performance. The robot dressed in clothes reminiscent of a high fantasy novel walked toward the bustling mega-city of the future. A bigger cluster of buzz words had never passed through his brain since he compiled the 2010's into his storage banks out of sheer boredom as he toiled away in a post apocalyptic wasteland.
Now as had been explained, Coruscant was run by one Emperor Palpatine. This whole place was his to rule and command. However the city was split into vertical tiers and the further down you traveled the more dangerous and lawless it became. Things like organized crime and the black market ran rampant. Sounded fun to explore. But before he went and started looking for trouble, Vitruvius had an immediate plan to get better acquainted with his new surroundings. He needed to visit this spectacular library filled with all the knowledge he would need to learn about Coruscant and key points of history and literature. If this city was as oppressive as he perceived it to be then no doubt the information was carefully selected for its denizens. As a Renaissance Machine he found this deplorable, but he was capable of reading between the lines and make inferences as to what was truth, what was cover up and where the difference lie.

Everything was silent. The landscape was devoid of life. All around him was a base white color save for the fountain that laid ahead of him. How many people had been brought here and they're reactions were fear or desperate confusion? Did they wonder if they were dead? That this was the after life? What was he thinking? Aside from the usual “Everything all at once,” answer, the forefront of his mind was where all of this would lead and what kind of worlds lie beyond this space.
Seeing that he was alone here, Vitruvius pulled back the hood on his leather cloak. He had no reason to hide his identity at the moment. The piercing blue eyes regrouped into a single source, letting it make its rounds on his skull, going around in a full circle before hitting the vertical tracks that went along his forehead, crown and to the back of his head. His eye took in everything as he headed toward the fountain.
Offhandedly he wondered if he'd ever be able to return to his land. He enjoyed the world he cultivated, the humans he worked with, the ones who grew up knowing of his travels and deeds, the ones who died telling the next generation that he was some magical guardian. That idea was amusing. Out of the centuries man had been reestablishing civilization, they never learned of the past. They weren't taught about the dying planet and how they had threatened to destroy everything. And that for a while...they had. Further, he had never revealed that he wasn't human. No one knew he was an entirely mechanical being and that his immortality, strength and wisdom didn't come from being some all powerful wizard or magical entity but just from the men who created him. He liked keeping it that way and he enjoyed the stories he heard about himself through the years and the reverence man had for him.
To that end he had always kept himself covered up. A massive black cloak that hid his face and obscured his black metallic form. Gloves that gave the illusion of warmth and human touch when underneath all he had were cold, metallic digits. He wore pants and boots, covering as much of himself as possible. Why? There were multiple reasons for the deception. He liked the mystery he created, the living legend aspect was entertaining to a machine that spent so much time isolated and recalling all the great myths through history. Of course if people found out he was some kind of machine, a piece of technology...it reminded him of the war mongers who wanted to pull him apart and make others like him built to kill. He didn't want his people becoming like that. A reason most life forms would be ashamed to admit was a sadly simple one: He liked pretending to be human. This reason was known only to him, naturally. It was one he had come to realize and accept a long time ago. He would attempt feigning humanity no matter what world he traveled to.
Speaking of...the fountain sat in what he would call the “center” of this room. Though it wasn't quite a fountain anymore. “Curiouser and curiouser...” His voice changed to mimic the character he was quoting. Ahead of him was now a deep reflecting pool set in the ground. Tension wires and sophisticated joints allowed his body to crouch as he leaned in close to inspect the phenomena. Water wouldn't affect him negatively, not like other metal objects or electronic systems that he knew of. Which was why he felt no trepidation as he soaked his gloved hand into the pool and pulled back a seeping handful of wet. It existed. It was liquid. But moments before it was a completely different construct. Now he was no genius (modesty was not meant for robots), but his perceptions were not limited like humans. He saw things for what they were and he saw them realistically and without delusion. So what could possibly change so fast and drastically that would make it seem like what was once a fountain was now a reflecting pool?
He stared into it, the single blue eye wandering left to right and back again trying to notice the slightest flaws or cracks in the programming. Instead all he saw was himself. Perfectly. Like a mirror. His eye split once more into a pair as he examined himself. He was aware of his appearance. The black matte finish on his exterior that most would call “skin”. The mix of alloys and flexible material that allowed him to move naturally rather than mechanically. The exposed hinges for his jaw that let him mimic speech and “eating”, to which he opened his mouth, a black maw revealing a flawless set of teeth. So human like. So close. But it was all appearance. Under the shell were circuits, hydraulics, fulcrums, levers, motors, wires and all sorts of machinery that simulated the human biological systems. His jaw closed. Tightly. It looked as though he was clenching his jaw, possibly grinding it. He was given the knowledge of art and expression. The math and sciences were all there and he knew them up and down, back and forth, jumbled up or laid out in linear sequence. That bored him. But the formula of beauty constantly changed and couldn't be pinned down. He chased it incessantly. He wanted to know how to experience it for himself. Oh he knew it. He was told what was beautiful. What was breath taking. He was told what gave hope to others, what certain pictures, paintings and expressions of art symbolized. But he couldn't define it for himself subjectively. And when he saw himself in this pool of water, he just saw a creation purposely designed to be as perfectly human in concept as possible. Execution? You could argue it was a success. But as Vitruvius stared into Vitruvius' own ethereal blue eyes, he had no insight other than the facts that summed up his whole. Maybe...perhaps...this journey would be his Homer's Odyssey? His Don Quixote. His Gilgamesh. Then maybe...perhaps...he would find a semblance of beauty and expression he can define for himself?

Character name: Vitruvius
Character source: Original
Character history:
In Vitruvius' world, mankind was on the dawn of a new world war. Violence, war crimes, acts of aggression, all of it was rampant and with outlets such as social media and extremists, everyone fanned flames to birth the fire of a world gone savage. A small group of scientists wanted to bring back the age of wonder, the child-like awe of what a brighter tomorrow could bring rather than the “gimme-now” instant gratification reality they dealt with. So they built a robot. But not just any robot. The “Perfect” robot. The advances of technology made their project, dubbed Vitruvius, virtually perfect by the standards of two great men: Leonardo Da Vinci and Vitruvius himself. Built to the specifications of the famous drawing and calculations laid out by whom the drawing was named after, their Vitruvius took on a greater calling. Not satisfied with an amazing piece of technology, the scientists imbued their creation with all the knowledge that would make it a modern day Renaissance Man. Vitruvius was an encyclopedia of every science, math, architecture, medicine, art, history and philosophy. They spent long hours developing programs that would allow him to pursue knowledge, learn how to make decisions and turn knowledge to personal experience and wisdom. Crossing the line that any science fiction story would tell you not to, the scientists decided the best way to let Vitruvius grow on his own was to give him Artificial Intelligence.
The end result was an intelligent, refined and imaginative android that reeled at violence and clung to his polymath roots and refused to look to the reality about him of impending doom. He was a creature of science! Of creativity! A testament to man's capability to make something that didn't kill or maim! Why should he expose himself to the rest of mankind? The scientists agreed whole heartedly. The government however, didn't. Demanding mass production of sentient soldiers with a capacity for weapons, upgrades and violence, the military held the scientists hostage and poked and prodded at Vitruvius.
His creators were killed when they refused to work on a new line of robots and Vitruvius was disconnected as the world finally went to war.
He wasn't sure WHEN he woke up, but he knows that he did. The world was desolate. The earth was scarred. Buildings lay in ruins and the remains of war and mankind littered the landscape. With no one to talk to and no more literature to consume, Vitruvius cleaned. He tried not to keep track of the lonely centuries that passed him by, but every measure of time made him dislike humans more and more. He turned inward, recounting tales of great heroes to himself, playing back stories of adventure and justice and action. At first it was just to distract himself from his work. But soon it became a ritual, if robots believed such a thing. As time flew by, Vitruvius was more enveloped by a fantasy world that he wanted to make reality. So when the first signs of humans returned, people locked away in bunkers who had been breeding deep underground, Vitruvius saw his opportunity.
Disguising himself with animal pelts (of course nature bounced back faster than mankind), Vitruvius guided humanity to fit his purpose. A world of little to no violence, dark age technology and shaping things to hit a turn of enlightenment where peace and virtue would reign. Unfortunately mankind just wasn't built for such things the way Vitruvius was.
Within two hundred years Kingdoms rose, people claiming to rule this and that popped up, prejudices returned and violence was making a mad come back. The population wasn't overwhelming and so Vitruvius turned to damage control. He played the role of a rogue mercenary, a wandering hero who solved the problems of different territories. Someone kidnapped a “Princess”? He brought her back with extreme justice. Some insolent dissenter is planning to massacre a village with an army? He cut them down and made sure the would-be villain never hurt so much as a fly again. He kept his people in line and took every precaution to keep the world from returning to that horrific state he woke up in.
And then one day, on one his many adventures through his land, Vitruvius just disappeared. All he remembers was hearing a report of some Sacred Fire Temple being found and making his way to investigate it. And then...white.

Something of Vitruvius' own design. A simple cross bow mounted to his right wrist makes for effective deterrents where he's from.

The Omniverse is a place that reflects the wishes of those who are part of it. But! There are rules. I will explain them only once, so listen carefully.”
A Deity. Interesting. Game on, then. He hadn't dealt with Gods before. He briefly wondered (that is roamed his databanks) if Omni was from some far off pantheon. Clearly Latin in origin, much like himself. His singular blue eye split into two. He scanned the white room he was in before his unfeeling hands were filled with light.
“This is Omnilium. It’s what ties the Omniverse together. Without it, you are nothing. With it, anything you desire can be yours. But you will need more than this. If you desire it enough, you will find it. You will find that using it comes naturally. Just think of what you desire most.”
Desire? Odd paradox. Why take him from his home knowing that would be among the first desire? Of course that's assuming he wanted to go home. He was, after all, built for learning. Curiosity was a process constantly running in the background.
“You will not be alone in the Omniverse. There are others. Of course, they, too desire Omnilium. Do not fear death. For as long as you interest me, you will be reborn.”
Ah. Death. He had not tasted (Silly robot, experienced is what he meant) death. He knew what it is. He had witnessed it. He made things confront it, human and animal alike. He understood death. But like describing color to the blind, death was just a thing he had never known personally. If he is to be “reborn”, death may actually be...intriguing.
“That’s all you need to know right now. You’ll figure out the rest soon enough. I’ll be watching … and waiting.”
Right. Ominous Omni faded out like a whisper in the wind. Left alone with this white room in a corner (yes, this great white hall of sorts had boundries), Vitruvius sought a way out. Chances were likely that this space in between spaces was not Omni's idea of being entertained. Which left him to conclude there would be an exit. Little did he know what lie in store for him.
I confirm that I have read and agreed to the Rules of Conduct.
