Quote:And so it begins. The uncertain quest-line! Let's do this BD.
Warning: This story will eventually contain mild violence and blood. The term "mild" is used uncertainly. Reader discretion is advised!
Upon their entrance into the Pale Moors, the verse’s namesake becomes readily apparent; a thin stream of intermingling fog and mist, like a solemn bride’s veil on her wedding day, falls across the gloomy countenance of the landscape. The sky above, lacking in the reassuring and childishly simple light of heaven that is oftentimes tinged with blushing pinks and soft periwinkle blues, is as murky and black as undisturbed oil. The solitary screeching of night crawlers rings out in the darkness, a despondent sound that would send goose-flesh rising up along any wary traveler's arms.
Interspersed in between the sky and wafting mists are the grey and withered fronds of frothy undergrowth and slimily creeping vines, overshadowed by the skeletal limbs of a bleakly leaning tree line. Chilling noises emanate out from the fog— sometimes a raspy cry, other times the shambling footfalls of something drifting, absolutely rootless and without good cause, through the muck.
Kanaya breathes freely here, the glow of her skin dimming down to a more cautious luminescence lest the pair is being surveyed from afar. Her light footsteps that mark her entry into this gloomy verse are quite different than Devon’s, as his feet sink into the accursed ground with a hearty slurp due to his being on unfamiliar ground. It appears that he has plodded into one of the unlucky patches of damp earth that have the unsettling consistency of gummy blood cake.
As he sorts himself out, Kanaya takes the time to summon a dark shawl to conceal her bioluminescence with further, as looking like an ethereal creature is far from ideal when paying a visit to the Moors.
It takes only a moment for the amorphous and virulently shifting glow of an Omnilium summoning to peter out into nothing. As the weight of soft cloth settles over her shoulders, Kanaya is a bit surprised to discover that the fabric has a velvety, dark satin sensation to it when she reaches up to feel of it between her fingers.
With a frown, she turns her head to the side to better see just what kind of silken abomination she has summoned only to get an unexpected high-collared neckline jabbing into the corner of her eye instead.
“What,” Kanaya says, because she will graciously accept eternal damnation if she is wearing a goddamn cape right now. When she attempts to straighten out the annoyingly wide and jutting collar of her cape, her expression sours further. Well, her thoughts were rather preoccupied with things of the stereotypical vampire persuasion. Perhaps she will be lucky and the undead will mistake her for their overlord or some sort of dark agent and be more amenable to what she asks of them.
Still tugging fruitlessly at the cape’s edge before seeming to give up with a frustrated huff, Kanaya turns to Brother Devon. There is a soft vwoosh as the cape mirrors this movement in a flare of silken whispering against the stale air. Kanaya cringes; how outright pretentious.
The young rainbow drinker sighs through her nose. The lengths she will go to for the sake of these undead rapscallions.
“We will have to pass through Darkshire on our way out towards the lower mires,” she informs him, inclining her head towards a faint assortment of buildings cast in greying blue silhouettes in the near distance. Her horns curve gracefully with the movement, as unwieldy as they might appear to be. “Although we should take great care not to disturb the locals— undead and living.”
It is true, unfortunately, that the last time Kanaya had even dared to approach the settlement of Darkshire was around her third resurrection, and needless to say it was not an especially anticipated experience or one that was dear to Kanaya’s heart. She can still imagine the feel of a thick and leaden crossbow bolt sinking into her hip with an unsettlingly thick noise as she had tried to wave to one of the watchmen. She greatly suspects that it may have been because there was a horde of undead milling around her that she was received so ungraciously, but still. What an unreasonable rejoinder.
Her yellow eyes focus on Devon once again; she had drifted off into her thoughts while staring out over the Moors. Perhaps she can use Devon as a meat shield emissary to the long-forsaken citizens of Darkshire. After all, he is splendidly normal in appearance even if his personality is a tad… excitable, and humans do so love to respond most agreeably to those who look similar to them. Whatever happens there, Kanaya should let Devon be the face of the operation.
Now, as for the undead, Kanaya fully intends to take the lead. Her previous efforts to sway them from Count Dracula’s hold may have been for naught, but she is just sure that she saw a faint glimmer of recognition in the infinitesimally-scratched and lifeless eyes that had gaped back at her several weeks before. Maybe this time she will be successful.
For now, however, they had better start walking; Kanaya can hear raspy growling noises and the gnashing of rotten teeth most acutely rising up from some indeterminable place in the underbrush, the disconcerting sounds setting her on high alert. A faint-shining light towards Darkshire beckons, reminiscent of a yellowish sodium vapor lamp.
She waits only briefly for a response from Devon before nodding and setting off on foot for higher ground. The standard undead are slow and especially ungifted when it comes to any steep incline, especially stairs. Besides that, her human companion will be much safer when out of reach of grasping limbs and nauseatingly swollen and pus-riddled nails. Disgusting— once she is in charge she will be certain to enforce some kind of hygiene regulations, or at least some rule that requires her fellow undead to keep their nasty hands to themselves.
The jade-blooded troll steps up onto a more or less even path that leads directly towards the town of Darkshire, a few dew slick pebbles skittering across the way and over into the colorless fog that no scrutiny would ever be able to easily break through. She believes that she hears them strike something fleshy and terribly solid in the darkness. An actual Schrödinger's zombie.
Without sparing even a passing glance towards the darkness, for gawking amazedly at the undead only seems to encourage them most of the time, Kanaya quickens her pace. A few fleeting seconds later, the first precipitous droplets of a rain shower fleck across the back of her cape.
Lips pulling into a displeased look, Kanaya adjusts the cape's collar so that it deflects the worst of the downpour.

I’m sorry if this offends people. No one needs to read this. I doubt my opinion will effect anything in the long run. I just need to speak my mind as everything as of late has taken a severe toll on me. Just write these off as the rantings of an absurdly petty person if you must.
I’ve just been so scared about how things have been going lately. The recent base assault on NB scares the hell out of me. The LAW people decided it had to be a surprise attack OOC as much as it was IC and then everyone treats Sasuke like shit for being stressed out that all his storyline plans have been put out to wash because a bunch of other members wanted to ruin everything for funsies. Now the whole thing has become a gigantic unplanned clusterfuck. No wonder people have been forced to drop out from the sheer stress of the thing, abandoning whatever plans they might have had.
Not to mention how quick a lot of people are to pull out banishment circles. Some members in the base assault were playing up banishment like it’s just a walk in the park, a fun little adventure, when the only way out can permanently taint your character and future storylines; especially if you’re good aligned. People argue that forcing people to go this route is okay because it makes the story more interesting in their eyes.
That’s the scary thing about this; people are so comfortable with forcing people into things. I’m terrified this might become the standard. I’m scared I’ll forever be questioning the motives of the friends I’ve made on this site, that trying to make a difference as a faction leader will just be an onslaught of constant paranoia and stress as anyone could just take all my work away from me in an instant.
Whatever happened to writing for fun?

As most people know, I am hosting a fusion fight event, and I knew long before starting how much work everyone would be required to put in just for a simple non-canon event. As such, I would like to ask if there's any possibility the participants may be able to receive some small OM reward; I don't want their amazing writing to go without compensation.

As soon as he could move, Jason dropped into Alpha stance expecting imminent danger. He slowly and steadily began to rotate, keeping himself crouched into Alpha. Eyes scanning the visible terrain for any form of danger. After a few silent minutes Jason finally came to the conclusion that he was safe, and eased himself back to normal height. In the far distance just on the horizon of whatever world this was, Jason could see what appeared to be massive sized structures, each one placed conveniently in every direction. It was like a compass, only Jason didn't know which direction was north, south, east, or west!
It mattered little anyway seeing be didn't know where in the hell he was, and that fact only pissed him off. He mulled over the possibility that this could all be some sort of mental test by Parthanax, but then dismissed the idea as he recalled the one sided conversation with that being earlier. Perhaps said being is an acquaintance of Parthanax and this really IS a test? If that is the case he had better start figuring out what the hell the end game was!
It would probably be a good idea to get a birds eye view of the terrain, ya know, figure out if this place actually is the way it looks from down here. With that in mind, Jason crouched low to the ground surface before propelling himself skyward into mach 1. A frown grew on his face once he realized he was maintaining one speed. The fuck? He could feel the burning if his Dragon Soul, but he couldn't access his flight speed. " Come on come on come on come on come on! " He bellowed out. Trying again and again to enter mach 1, to no avail. Jason would hover in place his head downcast, only for a moment. Pitching his head backward he screamed out in rage towards the vast skyline in an epic dragonic beastly roar that could be heard for miles. His chest burned, but it wasn't because he was hurt or anything like that. Jason felt helpless.
His speed wasn't all that was gone however. He could feel that his inhuman strengths were no longer within him. Yes he still had inhuman strength, but not as much in comparrison to before! Is this what it was like to be mortal? Was that the test then? Perhaps Parthanax was trying to show him he took his abilities for granted? That must be it! Once again turning his face to the sky he bellowed out " Parthanax! I understand what you are trying to show me! What is it you would have me do!? "
Half an hour or more must have passed since he asked that question, and he was still hovering many feet above the surtave awaiting an answer. That's when he began to feel fatigued. It came as an odd rush to Jason for Zepharians has massive amounta of stamina and could usually fly for hours before feeling the slightest bit of tiredness. A downcast expression plastered onto his face, Jason began to slowly descend back to the ground where the large fountain sat. He grew fearful that this wasn't a test after all...

| Concerns regarding Underverse & the questline |

So, Alexyana and I have been wondering about this whole Underverse thing quite a bit lately, so we decided we would write a post about it together.
First, we want to state that we want this to be a reasonable discussion regarding the topic, not an argument nor a fight. If you cannot keep it civil and mature, or you feel that you’re getting too emotionally involved, we kindly request that you would take a breather and come back later.
The Issue
It has been said multiple times that the only way out is through Diablo himself by becoming his lackey. In addition to that, the quest line itself requires a 20 - 40k word amount of work.
Quoting Proto Mouse on that, (Or sources for these statements)
here
and
here.
For the lazy, there are quotes inside the spoiler.
Proto Mouse Wrote:I hate to be the bad guy, but unless an additional quest is released or the current quest description is changed/expanded, Diablo is the only way out.
You are free to do whatever else you'd like to in the Underverse, but the only individual with a way out of the Underverse is Diablo.
Proto Mouse Wrote:@Nealaphh - No. All Tyrael can do is act as a guide for primes. He'll ultimately tell the prime that only Diablo has the route out. Please note it says 'He can point you in the right direction.' That direction? Diablo.
@Pendragon - You have to become his lackey. This is the Prime Evil we're talking about. He's not going to just let you out because you got bloody.
There's a reason why the Underverse is the worst, most god-awful place in the Omniverse.
But we must ask. Is this really how it should be?
While we completely understand, that much like Proto said, there's a reason why the Underverse is the worst, most god-awful place in the whole Omniverse, we feel that the Banishment stops being a “punishment” for the character (an interesting and challenging storyline to have) and becomes a punishment to the player instead.
The 20-40k word requirement is a big obstacle to pass. It takes a comparatively long time to scrap together, especially if you’re adamant on writing an enjoyable story out of it. This however isn’t the issue in our opinion. In our opinion, the issue is the choice you’re forced to make.
If your only option to escape the Underverse is to make a decision that you know your character wouldn’t make (For example, joining Diablo) you will have no motivation to write the quest out to begin with.
Of course, characters that would willingly join Diablo, are exempt from this as joining Him and His army would be their goal. Good characters however, are at risk of being completely destroyed if they don’t go through a major change because like said, the majority of them wouldn’t make the decision to join Diablo, to begin with.
This would mean the player has to choose between:
1. Accepting their fate and leaving the character in Underverse forever.
2. OOC:ly deciding to have the character make a decision that they would never make, just to get them out. (Becoming Diablo’s subordinate)
3. Trying to lie to Diablo, and if the character escapes and gets banished again (which they likely would, as mentioned in the reasoning above), stay in the Underverse forever, as Diablo wouldn’t likely let them out due to lying already the last time.
4. Resetting the character.
Arguments broken down to a list can be found below. This also includes things not mentioned in the above post, so please do take a peek.
- 250 OM for a Banishment Circle is really cheap. Usually the fight preceding the Banishment alone is sufficient to cover for that expense. In comparison to other consumables, it seems very powerful for its price.
Just as an example: for 250 OM you can get one pill or an Elixir, which mildly raise your chances of victory in a battle that you can fail even with that item being used. The item is consumed regardless of the battle’s outcome, whereas your Banishment Circle is only consumed after the battle if you win it.
- The Underverse forces you to take a decision - become Diablo’s subordinate, go for a betrayal and risk never being able to leave the Underverse again, should you be banished a second time (Diablo doesn’t exactly seem like the forgiving individual), or stay down there. The only other option is to reset your character and start out fresh, which to most people is not an option.
This decision severely cuts into the liberty of roleplaying your character the way you want them to, down to the point of making you entirely unable to play them.
- The risk of being banished a second time is relatively high. Many people will know that you have been banished IC:ly (as a Banishment typically is the result of a faction war or a Bounty-Hunt, in the former case the faction members would know about this, in the latter case the Bounty-boards would display the person as banished), and that’s without counting characters who use Insight.
Thus if you escape the Underverse, there’s a high chance that you are Diablo’s servant now - more than enough reason to banish you again. Plus, the faction you were banished or Bounty-ed by is probably not going to forget about you. This could also spread from them, to the other factions, turning you into a target.
The Banisher might also be afraid of you wanting revenge on them, and thus take action before you can, banishing you again.
- The Underverse doesn’t have many people for you to play with, so there’s little reason to stay down there and continue playing. There are no quests outside of the one about escaping it, no Void Portals, Artifacts or anything else.
This is likely due to the fact that the Underverse is meant to be most god-awful place in the whole Omniverse - it makes sense ICly -, but at this point it’s not making for a “challenging” place to play, it’s cutting into the fun of playing.
Proposed solutions
An alternative quest line involving Tyrael which helps you get out. This could be more difficult than the Diablo questline, with 30k-40k words being the requirement.
A Void Quest - perhaps involving a one-way door to the Void, to prevent people from visiting the Underverse whenever they want to.
An alternative questline about your character obtaining a one-time Consumable that is the opposite to a Banishment Circle, allowing your character to unbanish themselves. For instance there could be an “illegal” arena fight similar to Diablo’s tournament with an Anti banishment Circle being put out as prize, or Diablo could have such items at hand which he uses to unbanish Primes, which can be stolen.
A questline in a similar vein to Lord of the Rings, where Frodo, Sam and Gollum were able to enter Mordor through a “sneak path”. It involves finding a way around the Black Gate into Camelot , guarded by an extremely powerful demon that must somehow be defeated - which would likely be a group quest like the Vasty Deep Void Quest, rather than for a single person.
Finally, we would like to thank you for making it through the post. Feedback is very much appreciated, but remember: please keep it civil.
