To Know Death / To Know About death.
Posted by: Artoria Pendragon - 01-24-2018, 03:19 PM - Forum: The Whateververse, Man - Replies (6)

So, recently I came into an argument over how the english language functions. The statements in question were as follows:

"To know death."

"To know about death."

In my argumentative adversary's opinion, they both mean the same.

I claim in rebuttal, that due to how the english language they're not the same at all.
To know death, is to have died. To have experienced death firsthand. To truly know death.
To know about death, is to know of the concept of death and dying. But not to have experienced it firsthand, yourself.

Which one of us is correct? Is either?
Discussion, go!

  Force Primes
Posted by: Strazio Rockwell - 01-24-2018, 12:10 PM - Forum: Help Desk - Replies (2)

Yo, so I think I already know the answer but I figured I'd ask just to be sure.

A couple of my characters are going to have Force prime NPCs. Am I able to introduce these characters as primes so I can interact with them and then recruit them as force primes later down the road? Or do I just have to wait for the update to drop?

Deliah McCommon slowly made her way down the hall, already dreading talking to the Prime who had claimed briefing room 6B as his personal office. The young cadet's heels clicked softly on the matte surface of Precinct One's upper floors, and the bright lights shined smartly off of the polished brass of her rank pads and blazer buttons. Kopaka had just returned from a scouting mission in the Nexus a few hours ago. She had seen the clunking droid stomp straight up to Brath's office, still covered in blood and snow. The Toa had asked not to be disturbed after debriefing with the Lieutenant, but a matter had come up that required his direct attention.

Steeling herself, Cadet McCommon took a sharp breath and tapped lightly on the pressurized door. A moment passed before it whooshed open, letting a startling gale of snow and ice out into the already chilly and sterile hallway. The lights in the room were off, and the Cadet could only make out vague suggestions of shapes. Then she heard his voice, cold and crackling, echoing softly from within.

"Speak."

Deliah took another small breath, and tried not to shiver.

"Ahem, yes. Sorry to disturb you, Kopaka. I was told to inform you that there was someone waiting for you in the lobby-

"Send them away, then." the dark room buzzed. Deliah tried to maintain a pleasant tone in response.

"Ah but, sir, it's someone here in response to your ad for assistance in apprehending EPD targets."

There was a long pause.

"Fetch them."

With that, the door to the biomech's room slammed shut. It blasted a final puff of glittering ice in the Cadet's face as she turned on her heel and trotted off to the precinct lobby. By the time she returned to the receiving area, the other Prime had set up camp on the solitary, black-leather couch. Head phones on, legs propped up and with a face full of a datavice, Dawnika Snow didn't even glance at the squirrely woman who was approaching.

Out of a mixture of fear and begrudging respect for Kopaka, the EPD guards had allowed Miss Snow to keep her high-power firearms, and a large rifle was cradled along the lounging girl's frame like a beloved pet. Deliah shook her head slightly.

Primes.

"Ehem. Excuse me Miss Snow."

There was a long pause before Dawn replied, failing to change posture or even remove her headphones.

"Mm?"

Deliah chose to interpret this as an acknowledgement and not what might be interpreted as a suppressed burp.

"Kopaka will see you now. I'll show you to his uh...chambers." Cadet McCommon chirped, gesturing towards the elevator.

"...Mm."

Dawn abruptly stood up and grabbed the rifle along its rack before following the Cadet to the lift. It was a quiet elevator ride, or rather, would have if Deliah had not been forced to listen to the souns blaring from behind Dawn's headphones. After another minute or so, the pair was standing outside of briefing that Kopaka had taken residence.

"Good luck!" Deliah whispered as she hustled away. Dawnika got the feeling this wasn't just about bounty hunting...

Hecate opened her eye's as she tensed her grip around the handles of her swords, only to find her hands empty.
"What manner of sorcery is this?" she thought to herself as she looked around her, . Before her a being stood before her, grinning and speaking to her seemingly answering her question before she could say it. In the depths of her mind she tensed, expecting a blow to the skull just like what had happened to her in her youth, when no blow fell upon her she let out her breath, and eased the muscles in her body. Her body felt familiar but yet different, she could feel the same power she had always had, emanating inside her, yet when she tried to draw on it to bring forth her swords she could not produce even a single snowflake.

She watched carefully studying the being with her royal blue eye's as the being offered her an orb, strangely colored it seemed to cascade color's glowing brightly in the darkness as she shoved it quickly into her uniform. She saw it too was clean as the day she first donned the white attire. Hecate took a step towards the being, who had addressed itself as "Omni" in that moment the world went a bright white, almost everything seemed white as she stood before a grand fountain. Omni was gone.

Testing her legs she took a step forward. when they responded she opened her mouth testing her vocals "Hello? Hello?" she called out to no one in particular, There were people, things and creatures walking around all of whom were of the likes she had never seen before.

She looked around once more before walking off from the fountain taking time to observe those around her.

  A Prologue's Epilogue
Posted by: Miranda Frost - 01-23-2018, 04:04 PM - Forum: The Ashen Steppes - Replies (1)

It was nice to finally get some fresh air. On this road there were none to oppose her, none to slow her advance. As the white haired warrior squeezed her rusted bike's twistgrip, its engine sputtering and struggling to increase its acceleration. The bike itself wasn't as subtle as Miranda would have liked it, but there was nothing out here, not anymore at least. Her eye flicked to the crumbling remains of Death Mountain , its still tremendous size growing within her vision as she approached. A shiver would wrack at her body. The thunder of beating wings forced the woman to turn her head, looking for its source, but it was no use.

 She was truly alone.

Her eye fell back to the ashen road before her, her claws cutting into her bike's hand grips. This place always gave her the creeps, yet she always ended up back here, the place where she and the rest of Gamma team slaughtered that horde of young dragons. It was a miracle that no lives were lost  in that battle, though many of them were knocking on death door. Miranda's eyes narrowed upon the destination she had chosen, the ground littered with the dried skeletons of the hordes they fought, the bleached bones marking their last moments in this world. Seeing them, she'd feel that all familiar phantom pain in her gut as if their talons were still embedded into her flesh. Her bike slowed to a stop, her boot swatting at the rusted piece of machinery's kickstand.

Her hand fell over her core as if making sure she wasn't wounded. Being here really wasn't good for her overall health. She'd shake her head and step from the vehicle, her eye catching sight of a lone metal crate just sitting there in the ash. She expected a meeting but not a soul was in sight. The crate itself didn't appear to belong to any gorons or that small rag-tag army Nealaphh had scrapped together prior to that battle. She'd kneel before the steel coffer, her claws brushing away the fine ash that had built upon it. The crimson light of her eye shone upon its rough surface. Miranda could see there was nothing nefarious hidden. However, its contents seemed quite interesting.

She'd set the heavy steel lid aside, her claws reaching  down to grasp at a piece of parchment of some sort.

"Tell me you like it ♥~ X" , the writing would in a bright crimson font, her eye falling to the address stamp at the bottom right of the card.

 Dr. X
 WhiteFor Pharmaceutical
 Tier 1, Ash Gate Ave
 Coruscant, Galactic Empire

Miranda would blink and set the card aside, her hands grasping at the article of clothing contained within, lifting it from his container.

Miranda had never felt both admiration and absolute rage in the same instance so whoever left this for her must have been quite the skilled individual. The coat was similar to the one she held but obviously newer and possibly hand crafted. The coat was lined with the shining crimson scales that belonged to Volvagia's brood providing fairly decent protection when considering the fashion it gave.  She stood there for a moment, her eyes gazing over the beautiful  scales. How fitting that she would receive a coat scrapped from possibly the same creatures she killed.

"Fuck it.", she'd mutter, shedding the heavy coat upon the ashen surface. Her arms would loop inside the soft leather lined sleeves, her shoulders rolling, letting the lighter coat to sit comfortably upon her shoulders. Her claws quickly fastened the dragon-tooth button, securing the coat to her frame. It seemed quite lighter than the coat she wore prior but given her body's exhaustion, she probably wouldn't benefit from it.

Sliding her hands into its two side pockets she'd discover another necesary article. Pulling the items out she'd discover what seemed to be an imperial citizen's id card as well as a passport and variety of other papers. Her eye twitched with irritation, looking over the very specific details listed in these papers. Whoever Miranda had contacted for help, they knew very particular details about her. Everything to the number of scars located over her body, to the various augmentations she held. Miranda couldn't have written out any medical documents as detailed as this.

She'd sigh, looking out into the rocky horizon with crimson heat lightning thundering from cloud to cloud. Her eye focused on the faint glow of Coruscant's gate in the distance.

 "Who. Are. You?"

  Time's Up
Posted by: Paige Turner - 01-21-2018, 08:57 PM - Forum: The Nexus - No Replies

Clouds hid the sky behind a curtain of silver, leaving the streets to bask in a cool shade. Little covered the streets beyond the vibrant leaves of elm and maple. Every house down the lane was neat and tidy, with shingled roofs, chipping paint, and an inviting front porch. Stagnant were the trees and the breeze this day. No one walked the streets, and no one played in their driveway. None cared to interrupt the world's silence, leaving it to bask in the forgotten pleasures of life. Not the people, not their pets, not even the birds up in the arbor. All was still.

Then, suddenly, a door slammed at the end of the lane. “I'm outta here!” Some man in a leather jacket stormed out to the sidewalk. A teenage girl in a light orange hoodie and ball cap stood out in front of the door, her expression unflinching.

“Wait, Allen! Where are you going?” Another boy, lanky and unassuming, squeezed past her and chased his companion.
“I don't need to put up with this garbage. Ten spaces in a row- IN A ROW- were mine, and that douchebag passed all of them without a care in the world!”
“It's just Monopoly, though, no need to get worked up...”
“I'm outta here, Tim. No hard feelings, but I ain't putting up with that jerkoff any more today.”
“What's your problem with her, anyway? What did she ever do to you?”
Allen attempted to explain, but hesitated. “Well, because she- er... Because... Ugh, it doesn't matter!” He threw his hands down in a fit. “All I know is that ever since her birthday, I've been getting awful vibes from her.”
“That's not fair-”
The girl called out. “It's not worth it, Tim, leave him alone.” Tim was disheartened by the denial, but no objection was made. Thus, Allen went on, stomping down the street in a bout of rage.

Tim walked back onto the front porch, his hands settled in his pockets. “I'm so sorry, Paige. I don't know what's gotten into him.”
“Eh, he'll be fine soon enough. Probably too late to continue the game, though.”
It started to rain, little droplets falling onto the pavement. “Er, actually, I think it's time to head home.”
“Oh, do you need an umbrella?”
“No, I'm good, but, uh, thanks though! I'll see you later, Paige.”
“Later, man.” It was probably best that Tim left when he did. There were amends to be made and friendships to rekindle, with Allen being the next target. Trust was a tricky mistress to please, but with all the time in the world, it was mostly a matter of patience. With this, Paige walked back indoors to continue her work.

Her workshop was nothing short of a disorganized garage. The metal door was never opened for privacy's sake, so the machinery behind it was taken down and recycled. Against the walls were gears the size of tires. Materials, tools, and gizmos of all sorts lined the shelves. Etc. The desk, drenched in lamplight, was covered in numerous pencil markings and splotches of ink and paint. Lying on its surface was a small action figure. A man with slick cream hair and a leather jacket, it was one of those greaser types that Allen held respect for, albeit unfinished. Also on the desk was a book, worn down with various cuts and scuffs.

Paige walked over to the desk, grabbed a paintbrush and began filling in the facial details. Allen's outburst was by no means unjustified.  What had happened to him was certainly cause for concern, but it was baffling how he remembered what happened at all. Before, she could do whatever she wanted. In those days, her friends might have reacted poorly at the moment, but it would all be forgotten in the blink of an eye. Now? Every action had consequences- real consequences- and she had learned it the hard way. Thankfully, these consequences were small at first, and had not yet grown significant enough to cause alarm. So perhaps she could still win him over before he really understood what had occur-

“Augh- dammit!” She flung her paintbrush across the room, snapping it in half upon smacking into the wall. It was too late; the eye and nose were engulfed in pitch black paint. “It's ruined. Great.” Her head slumped into her palm. She reached for the book and started flipping through. “And I didn't sign my name before now, did I? ...Of course, I did not.” She placed the book back down, receding into her thoughts. Perhaps the figure can still be fixed? No, the paint has dried by now, that wouldn't work.  Plus it would take too long to make a new one. “Oh well, let's just go back. It's one game of monopoly, after all.”

The book's cover portrayed a land of orange skies, falling sand, wooden beams and giant cogs: the Clockworks. It beckoned to her, almost glowing through the cracks in its seams as she reached out to it. Upon opening it, she turned to a page with her signature on it. It possessed an image of her kitchen just a few minutes before her guests had arrived.  Paige muttered some phrase in an archaic language. In response, all the gears on its cover began to turn.  Sand shifted across its leather front.  Cuts in the tome glew an eerie light orange, brighter and brighter as the wheels turned ever faster. Instants in time flashed before Paige's eyes as the world turned back to that moment recorded on paper...

And then nothing.
