Character name: Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden
Character source: The Dresden Files
Character history: Harry's childhood was, to use the simplest explanation, messed up. In what must have been some sort of universal joke, his birthday is on Halloween. His mother, Margaret "LeFay" McCoy, died in childbirth, and he spent the first six years of his life ignorant of his latent magic and the world his mother had lived in, travelling with his stage-magician father, Malcom Dresden. At the age of six, Malcom died of a brain aneurysm, leaving Harry an orphan. Shortly after manifesting his powers during a school track event at age 10, he was adopted by Justin DuMorne, an abusive man who taught Harry much of his magic before attempting to enthrall both him and his fellow adoptee and girlfriend, Elaine. Harry escaped alone, facing down the Outsider, He Who Walks Behind, and seeking out the help of the Leanansidhe. He made a deal with the Leanansidhe for enough power to kill DuMorne, faced down his mentor, and killed him, stealing the spirit of knowledge that the man possessed.
Shortly after he was found by the White Council of Wizards and put on trial for breaking the First Law of Magic; Do not kill by the use of magic. Found guilty, he was placed under the care of Ebenezar McCoy on a sort of probation, called the Doom of Damocles. The terms ran thus; should he break another Law of Magic, both he and McCoy would die. Ebenezar took Harry out to his farm and taught him things more important than magic, like patience and hard work. After some time getting his act together under McCoy's tutelage, he gained full membership in the Council, removing the death penalty from Ebenezar's head, though not his own. After some time spent travelling the country, he settled in Chicago, Illinois. He spent three years in the employ of Nick Christian, the private detective running Ragged Angel Investigations, before getting his P.I. license and opening his own detective business.
((Several events follow, and much of my explanation would be spoiler-tastic. In lieu of ruining the books, I'll leave a link to Harry's Wiki page. But beware. He who increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow. Spoilers, mate. Suffice it to say he's being taken from the end of the book Changes.))
Stats:
ATK:3
DEF:2
SPD:2
TEC:3
Starting Proficiencies: Ranged (1000), Melee (1000). Debilitating (1400)
Starting Powers: None yet.
Starting Moves:
((I plan to purchase more of Harry's spells once I get more OM. Until then, these three items are what he's got.))
Wizard's Staff (300): This is one of Harry's primary tools. In addition to being used for magic spells, it's decent at being used to whack people upside the head.
Blasting Rod (300): Harry's second tool, this foot-long, rune-carved rod of ash smells lightly of wood smoke. Its main purpose is to channel the power of fire, through the incantation Fuego. This spell fires a blast of flame two feet wide out to a distance of ten feet. Harry doesn't have much control over the flame; it acts like natural fire when the magic propelling it runs out.
Shield Bracelet (300): The last of the tools Harry had on him when he was pulled into the Omniverse, his bracelet needs no incantation, instead working on pure will. The five shields, made of various metals, focus Harry's willpower into a protective shield. The nature of the Omniverse has limited it to a disk with three feet in diameter.
Writing example: From Bleach: End Point. My account there is Felix Weiss.
As if on cue, Felix's day got a lot more complicated just a couple minutes after he finished his pie. At least the universe had the mercy to wait before trying to screw him over. He sat upright, face going blank as he made the mental switch to the Hellhound persona, taking care not to let emotion show through. The icy stare caused a person in front of him to walk just a little faster, but he didn't notice. He was too busy honing in on the high level of strength that had just caught his attention, like a hornet's nest buzzing at the base of his skull.
The stranger wasn't a Hollow, or the screaming would probably have started already. That left several options; High-powered humans, Fullbringers, Shinigami, or Quincy sprang to mind at first. The Hellhound wasn't used to this kind of encounter; most of his time with another high spiritual energy was either with his dad or fighting Hollows. This felt different from either. Felix stood up slowly, long coat billowing behind him.
The mercenary just stood there for a minute. It was hard to decide on a course of action. The 9mm handgun he used for normal threats sat neatly in a shoulder holster, with the clip in the pocket below it, ready to be loaded with one fluid motion. On the other hand, a gun wouldn't really do much against whatever was behind him, should his senses be accurate. He didn't dare turn around to ascertain the nature of the threat. Rather, he started walking forward, away from it.
Suddenly, without preamble, Felix reversed direction and activated Bringer Light to launch himself into the air and land behind the source of the power, drawing the Special Weapon form of his Fullbring out into the open, the oversized blue-and-gray gun forming in his hand and hovering just away from the stranger's head. A few odd looks were directed Felix's way, but the weapon, made out of reishi, was invisible to most humans. Carefully, in a voice void of anger, fear, or compassion, he asked, "Who are you?"

This game makes me happy. Reminds me of DQIX more than anything else, and that's probably my favourite 3DS game except for Monster Hunter 3 U. It doesn't take itself too seriously, mixing and matching classes for your four characters is super fun, and the Brave/Default is a genius twist. This might actually usurp DQIX as my favourite JRPG (I don't count Paper Mario otherwise that would win). Just got Ringabel. Anyone else playing?
One of my favourite things is that you can customise it a lot. It's really not at all grindy by default, but you can make it even less grindy by turning down the random encounter rate and turning up exp gain. Or the reverse. Difficulty changes too. The default feels good though (fittingly), all I've changed is the voices to Japanese so I can use it to practice while I read the text. Though the English VAs are fantastic and I was a little torn.

Working on her own terms was always how Samus operated best. Working with the robot kid and the magical girl had been necessary, but not optimal. She was a bounty hunter, when it came down to it, and the job came with an element of competition. That was what made hunters the best, gave them their niche. There were some jobs governments couldn’t – or wouldn’t – do.
The heroine had been busy the last few weeks, and made quite a name for herself both in the upper and lower tiers. She’d noticed the pointing fingers and the cries of excitement when they saw her in the city above. And the sudden silences wherever she walked in the lower tiers. More than once, she’d been drawn on simply for being there. She’d killed several dozen criminals and apprehended many more. Some part of her felt remorse, but anyone intending to kill had to be prepared to die themselves.
She’d decided to leave Adam at her ship for the same reasons she worked alone. She didn’t need someone judging her actions, making every decision a drawn-out debate. Once she’d gotten over her initial happiness at having a familiar voice back, she’d started to remember how annoying the once-Commanding Officer was. If there was one thing she hated, it was being bossed around. He couldn’t help it – these kinds of things became ingrained, she was sure, to the point where he did it automatically – and he was easily the most tolerable person she’d ever taken orders from. But after that time, she felt even more resolute than ever that working her way up through the system was a fool’s game. It was make it on her own, or die trying. Luckily for Samus, she was immortal now.
Being a Prime had so many advantages in this world. It was no wonder that organisations like the Copper Eye existed. It was so easy for people like the Emperor to subjugate secondaries, people who wouldn’t even be in the Omniverse if not for the cruelty of Primes. Why tear people away from their homes and bring them to such a world? It was practically slavery. Samus wondered if the people of the top tier knew that on some level, and simply chose to ignore it.
Not everyone hated her in the lower tiers. She certainly didn’t hate them. Some of the locals had been brave enough to approach her, and for that they had been rewarded. Samus could do more than destroy – her new powers as a Prime meant that she could fix things, turn their scraps of salvaged omnilium into food and shelter. She could set a good example. She’d gone one step short of signing up for the F-Zero races. While they looked incredibly fun, and the prospect of earning some street cred with her piloting skills was tempting, they were also incredibly dangerous. She wasn’t worried about herself so much as all the people she’d kill.
It had been a long day, and Samus didn’t feel like going home just yet. And so she stepped out of an elevator onto the busy streets of Tier Three, heading to a place she’d been a couple of times before.
The barman’s face crinkled into a smile at her approach. “Long day, Samus?”
She chuckled dryly. “Yeah. The special three, please.” An orb of omnilium dripped from the tip of her finger onto the counter.
“Coming right up.”
The bar was somewhere between nice and run-down, a balance that made Samus feel far more comfortable than the ritzy restaurants that filled the top tier. It was set up almost like an ice cream parlour, with several machines humming gently away behind the counter, each spinning its own flavour of brightly-coloured juice. The tender went between three of them – green, red, blue – filling up a glass, before tapping the rim, causing the three colours to mix beautifully together. It reminded Samus of omnilium. She took the straw and inserted it into the bottom of her helmet, connecting it so that the straw in her helmet which let her drink water now filled up with the fruity cocktail. She drew deep and felt a scream of pleasure from her tired body as her bloodstream rushed with sugar.
The man behind the counter – his namebadge read ‘Otto’ – regarded her for a moment, as if to say something, before coming out with it. “You never take off your helmet, do you huh?”
Samus watched the juice mix float around in the glass. “… Sometimes.”
“Don’t mean to be prying or anything. Ain’t you immortal anyway, though?”
“Doesn’t mean I want to die. Or worse.”
“On Tier Three?”
“It happens.”
Otto shrugged. “I’ll take your word for it,” he said, drying a glass absent-mindedly.
“I’ve been caught off guard before. Back when I was younger. Bunch of thugs tried to jump me without my suit.”
“Damn.” Otto’s eyes widened. “But you …?”
“I sent them all to the hospital. Still, I shouldn’t have been so careless. It could have been a lot worse.”
The barman nodded sagely. “Lotta superpowered-types in the Omniverse. Don’t see much myself besides on the news. To be honest, you’re the only Prime we get in here. Probably all the bars around here. It’s nice getting to talk to one.”
A smile crept across the hunter’s lips and she nodded. It occurred to her that despite this being her third visit, she had no idea of the man’s name. Surreptitiously, she peeked at the name badge, and stored it somewhere between the names of all the criminals she was still hunting and the varieties of fauna found on planet Zebes.
A television blared above the counter, and someone else at the counter pointed at it. “See that? Actual dragon. You’d never catch me going to Camelot.”
Samus turned to look at the screen and her blood ran cold. Momentarily, she’d mistaken it for someone – something else. She relaxed.
“You ever hunt one of those, Samus?” Otto asked.
The hunter was silent. “Yeah. Actually, monsters like that are my speciality.” It was true. For some reason, they terrified the average person. Samus found people a lot more scary. Creatures had patterns. They were straightforward. And they were strong, but so was she. There was something fun about fighting them. She freely admitted that fact. After all, there had to be more than one reason she’d been doing her job so long, and so well.
She looked up at the screen again. There was no intelligence in the monster’s face. Not like Ridley. Far less monstrous, but still, according to the news report, a danger. It had killed many people already. That was that, then. The hunter stood up. “Looks like I have my next job.”
“You serious?!” Otto blinked, thinking about his own question for a moment before continuing. “I thought you were loyal to Coruscant, or something.”
Samus said nothing to that. “Don’t worry, I’ll be back.” She grinned. “I still want to try the special eight.”
And with that, she was off.

Monthly awards have been away for a while, but now it's time for their triumphant return! Kinda? Over the winter, it has gestated, and now we have the much more casual Monthly Roundup. Essentially, I'll just be talking about the In-Character events of the month, and throwing out props to the writers involved.
It's not a big one this month, as we're coming out of hibernation. Lots of folks went to sleep for the winter holidays, and I was rather busy myself, but we picked up and thanks to a fresh advertising strategy now have lots of new members coming in. But we did see the beginning of the Rage of the Rathalos storyline, our first artefact hunt. Expect to see sparks by the end of February ....
We also finished up the Emperor's Jubilee storyline, climaxing with a gut-wrenching twist by our newest mod, Proto Man. I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it, but neither he nor Samus will be forgetting these events any time soon. Read it from the beginning here.
We also finally wrapped up The Scramble this month. With both King Bradley and Thrall returning to their respective regions, the Nexus is free ... for now. But you can be sure that agents from every faction have their eyes on the new arrivals, Dark Link and Jak Mar. With many Primes heading to Camelot to assist against the Rathalos, and the betrayal of those Primes at the Jubilee, could favor be slipping from the Empire towards the Kingdom? Only time will tell.
Catch you all in February!

The sun had begun to set casting the verse's skies in bright and dark colors with mixes of vibrant oranges, soft pinks, pale yellows, and darkening blues. The sun it's self was orange-red and slowly sinking behind the horizon, only a bit of it's light still covered the lands below. The lands were beginning to quiet as the day dwelling animals began to sleep, opening new sounds of the coming darkness. While the day was a time of safety and light to most creatures, nightfall was the time for the dangerous and the dark. Dark Link preferred it this way. The cool, crisp air blowing gently against his inhumanly pale skin. The quiet sounds of nature deep within the bushes and trees. It was a comforting feeling that he had gotten from the Hero of Time.
His love for nature seemed to reflect onto the shadow as well. Pushing such thoughts aside the shade made his way through the darkening night his crimson red eyes searching for any source of magic he could get his hands on. He was famished! Though that was probably the wrong word for it. He wasn't actually hungry, he just felt the deep desire to feed on magic to regain what strength he had lost when entering this Omniverse. It's how he survived, almost like a vampire... or a leech. A frown graced the dark creature's visage at the thought of being compared to such a lowly insect.
With an annoyed 'Tch' sound he pushed his thoughts aside as he thought about what to do next. From what he gathered from eavesdropping on the people in the verse, people here could 'summon' things with something call "omnilium". Stopping, the doppelganger decided on trying this 'summoning' thing as he concentrated on summoning something that was familiar to him and no doubt his 'light' side as well. After three minutes had went by a small crimson red glowing 'orb' with wings had formed it's four wings twittering at great speeds as it bounced around in the air before making a 'jingling' sound that surprised Dark Link as it began to talk. "....Master?" It questioned, the voice masculine, soft, and child-like as it acknowledged it's creator. "Well what do you know? It actually worked!" A dark smirk appeared on his features as he spoke satisfaction in his tone.
"Yeah. I'm your master! And I'm gonna name you Ivan! It's that annoying fairy friend of Link's name backwards." He said before scowling at the thought of that damned thing... The fairy seemed to bob it's head in agreement of the name as it hovered close to the shadow man. "Let's go Ivan And I swear if you say "listen" just once, I'll kill you got it?" He proclaimed as the Navi mimic made the jingling sound once more afraid to anger it's master and instead followed the rogue creation further into the forest, both unaware of the encounter they would soon experience...

A portal popped out into a bright light area. Jak's eyes were used to a dark room, and he had to shield his eyes from the light of the new place he was.
"Where the hell was he?!"
Jak's eyes snapped open "DAX!" "DAXTER! NO!". He growled as he saw a fountain and leaned against it. The old teen tried to catch his breath, realizing that Erol and Baron Praxis were gone.
...and yet so was Daxter, his best friend.
Daxter helped control the beast hidden inside himself and now? He was gone.
He looked at himself, he shivered. He had to look for new clothing soon. What he was wearing did not look appealing... at all.
He walked to a porta called "Camelot" and walked there after a few hours. He stopped and took a deep breath and walked in.
