  Claraina Arrives
Posted by: Claraina - 06-24-2015, 09:20 PM - Forum: The Nexus - Replies (5)

Quote:I am not Superhuman
All Claraina could see, could comprehend, was complete and utter darkness. There was no sense other than of self as if she were the only thing that existed. It was a terrifyingly dreadful sensation, one that gripped her like the icy fingers of death and threatened to drive her to the depths of insanity. The only saving grace from such loneliness came in the vague shape of a person.

Omni it had said its name was, its only defining features being the masculinity of its seemingly ethereal form and the mouth that smiled wide and friendly as it spoke. Though knowing not whom Omni was, as the only other soul around Claraina had the natural inclination to reach out to it for comfort, only to find there was nothing she could do but think and listen. So she did, thoughts clouded with questions that Omni answered freely as if to put her at ease.

One response came with a gift and upon its presentation the unconquerable fear that had sub-consciously held her trapped in her own body was broken, the child's natural vanity and greed drawn to the beautiful globe of colors. Claraina clasped it to her breast as if it alone could bring her salvation. However, the way Omni described it to her reminded her of her own beliefs in how the universe, and all of reality, worked; Mana. The building blocks from which all things came and returned, that which nothing could exist without.

Before her dread of the darkness could fully resurface through the moment of peace, Omni concluded their conversation and released the girl from Hell, sending her instead to what some may consider the Gates of Heaven. White that made even snow seem dull and gray stretched out all around her for an eternity, broken in only nine locations; the wondrous multi-tiered fountain from which the purest of water flowed and eight distant structures that appeared to lead to realms beyond this one. The existence of other life at those distant peaks was lost in the haze of her swimming vision.

The revelation of her new surroundings was a quick observation, one that faded to the back of her mind as she searched within herself for all else that seemed lost. There was so much she felt she should know and be capable of but did and was not. Her own past was fuzzy. The faces of her family were like time-worn photographs that came in blurs at the best of times and their names sounded garbled as though she were underwater. A world forgotten as she was thrust into a new, foreign one.

Those thoughts made her fear from before manifest once more and she collapsed into a worthless puddle of sorrow before the majestic fountain. The sound of its flowing waters muffled the sobs that shook her small body, which lay curled beneath her thick blanket of blood-red hair. Consumed by grief, she clutched desperately at the Omnilium in her hands, the only thing in this new existence she knew and understood.

June Community Accolade Nominations + Voting (Until 7/3)
Posted by: Proto Man - 06-24-2015, 09:01 PM - Forum: Bookkeeping Archive - Replies (19)

Welcome to Community Accolades, your monthly platform to highlight the success of your peers.

Monthly Community Accolades entails nominating and voting on who you think best epitomizes the categories selected for each month. Categories may vary each month.

This is the nomination thread.

Nominate your choices, and after one week, we will move onto a head-to-head vote between the two individuals with the most nominations (unless someone has +5 more nominations than the next guy… that’s a landslide).

For now, all you have to do is read the category, think of someone who best exemplifies it, and explain your reasoning in 2 or 3 sentences. Post that all in this thread. There is no rule against nominating your own characters, and you do not have to nominate for all categories (just those you feel comfortable with).

Winners will become ''Community Stars' until the next vote. They’ll receive a Medal!, a blue user title, and a bonus ‘reward.’

‘Best’ Character – Which character has you engaged the most?

‘Best’ Writer – Which writer wowed you the most?

Most Helpful – A staffer or a member who gave you amazing feedback on a story or was simply there to help you sort out some of your problems.

Rising Star – Which up-and-coming member stands at the crème of the crop? (must have joined within the last month and a half or have less than 8000 OM)

'Best' Pair Story – Which two writers have crafted a story you love?

Friendliest – Who do you think is the nicest person to chat with or hang around with? It can be because they make you laugh, or because they're just the bee's knees

'Best' NPC – What non-player character (can be a site, personal, or story NPC) entertained you the most (for whatever reason)

  Consistency In NPCs
Posted by: Thaal Sinestro - 06-24-2015, 08:37 AM - Forum: Omniverse Discussion - Replies (6)

So, as I have learned, Roland talks like a total fucking psycho to most people. Like most people have done and will continue to do, I neglected to read the entirety of the primary source for an NPC. Tisk tisk, shame on me, yes, I know. However, this is, and will continue to be, common. As a result of this collective ignorance to primary sources, other writers have also written Roland's speech like I have: NOT CRAZY. So, in order to remedy this, I've included into the story a write around. Essentially, Roland speaks in the High Speak (the sort of language/accent/dialect of English spoken in the Dark Tower series) only in private, or to himself. He speaks in what he's learned is the "regular way" most of the time, especially when dealing with his Sheriffly tasks. He's like an immigrant that occasionally goes into his native language when it slips his mind. That smooths out the inconsistency.

The reason I tell this story is because I'm curious what everyone's opinions(/rules) are on the subject of NPC consistency. Should we be submitting amendment requests for the NPC profiles? Do we want to just let those inconsistencies sort of fade away as we ignore them (which seems to be what most people do)? My intention is less a matter of making rules and just curiosity what everyone's thoughts are.

Retane C&C "The Namekian and the Warzone"
Posted by: Caira Ayryn - 06-23-2015, 09:18 PM - Forum: Omniverse Discussion - Replies (1)

Well, you probably knew this was coming. (Though it was kind of nice how I could take my time with it.) It can be rewarding to know you have someone reading your work, and even more when they take some time to offer feedback or just vocalize some of the the best and memorable moments that take place. So without further ado some reflection on your earlier works.

- SN: After some thought, I decided not to critique the Malefactor quest (or at least include it in this particular thread), as I don’t think it pays to double-judge things.
Second SN: The title of this thread happened just because I thought it sounded cool at the time. -

The End of a Beginning: The Beginning of an End

Well, I’ll just start out to say that I thought this was one hell of a debut. From the first sentence I felt myself inclining toward the screen, searching for whatever inklings you decided to scatter. In this kind of dark, ominous painted tone, a descriptive hold took place, where the reader (that’s me,) felt the distinction between imagery and depth. With skill you wielded each, and it complemented the effect on the reader very well.

The introduction transcended the screen for me (in a good way), because there was some information woven in there. It is valuable to know what the author is thinking about as he writes, and in a few short sentences you summarized Retane’s Namekian heritage for those who haven’t seen DBZ. I also liked how you included all his titles, because, that just shows how much killer experience the character has, and perhaps implies that Retane has gotten around to kicking some ass.

So far, as Retane speaks to the jackal, I liked the use of dialogue, and the impact it has sets an idea the reader might get when forming an opinion on his character. We don’t immediately know who Retane is (sensibly, of course) and nor is it any fun to blatantly define his character in a few narrating words. You let the reader figure him out, and it has a profound effect on the strength of his personality. It is storytelling done at its finest. (Example quote so you know the context I refer: “I send them to their grave, cursed to not know the name that put them in the afterlife.")
I felt the action was paced well, and there was plenty of gradual suspense layering the motion of where the scene was going.

I like how, looking back now that you have the Malefactor, it kind of ties into what the jackal did to Retane at the beginning, the induced amnesia which explained how Retane was able to remember some things, but loose other fragments of his memory and thought. The fact that jackal is also wiping the people’s memories who Retane has met and impacted is devastating, and Retane will not even know who to ‘blame’ as well as be able to find himself eventually. This has purpose, quite obviously, and really gives Retane the opportunity to start anew.

The consequence of finality was displayed when Retane remembered the names and faces of those he had grown with, there was a mix of elements that blended rather well, and were sensible to his character and who he was once before and what he had overcome. The memories were similar to those that I imagine one would recall at death, his triumphs, prized moments, thrilling battles (DA!!), relationships made, and those who had been lost.

The way you had described Retane’s respect for the fallen was quite honorable, and really cool for me to find out that he was like that. It also reinforced the bond I felt you had with Tapion, though I don’t know much about it.

The recounted memories were quite powerful, Retane recalled life and death and yet there was no hesitation in his judgement. “God of Death” certainly was brought to new meaning as life was taken away from his enemies and betrayal was brought to his brothers (Raspberry).

The scenes were realistically balled into a jumble, and I felt like each one was revealed at a periodic point where it was actually relevant to the “final” growth of Retane’s character. Gromp’s mention at the end and how this part was lead up toward the end was skillfully placed.

SUDDENLY he landed in the Nexus, and fate begins to fall on Retane’s shoulders. And much depth was conveyed by the loss of his past.

Familiar faces and lost memories are shown well from Retane’s perspective as he is trying to sort it all out. For the reader, there are a few mysteries as to who Enroshia is, though there were subtle mentions of it, I wasn’t on chubbs so some of the context of their characters is hard for me to follow, but, there isn’t much that can be done about that.

Anyway, Arith is quite amusing, and Retane’s reaction to his ghostly association (“Boo”) came off to me as a strong “I am not amused.” Which was a strong (and funny) ending to the first thread.
Gouki’s First Coming

Gouki’s style is really cool. He’s a distinguished character and leaves a resounding imprint on one’s mind. He also brings out the best in you, as all good writing partners should. He’s also quite lively!

Why doesn’t it surprise me you are fighting Gouki?

Gouki v Retane clash was pretty epic, he described his movements very thoroughly which I appreciated when trying to imagine his hand to hand combat motions. The description (in depth) contrasted your (Retane’s) fluid action. And he was just warming up.

I like how Retane’s recap and Enroshia, as well as his new amnesia and vulnerability are taken into account during the battle. The death was pretty epic, done with great purpose from Retane’s POV because of what has happened and continues to cause him to suffer and Gouki (with superb finesse) created a cool post around this as well, with Ret’s death the main feature.

Past Revealed.... The First Horsemen

Revival and a crisis of the self. This thread starts off with some good information as well as dictation and interaction that Retane almost needs. The past is revisited with careful practice from Enroshia and with a recap that gives a backround to both the readers AND Retane.

It was a pretty cool concept for Enroshia to make an appearance and in dialogue tell Retane of his past. The storytelling in this alone was really nicely done, though Retane’s reaction seemed to be more absorbing the truth than realizing the

Ha

Quote: “Stay away from Dante’s Abyss.”

That happened.

There were a few grammar flaws in your older work, but you’ve been doing quite well with keeping up on it, as well as in your latest battle with Renji, which have been spellchecked for accuracy and flow.

Overall, I think you are a great storyteller and I like your use of dialogue. Keep it up.

  That Morning in Berry Blitzkrieg
Posted by: Guu - 06-23-2015, 07:39 PM - Forum: Camelot - Replies (1)

My name is Princess Bonbon Sunshine. I fear that I maybe getting too used to this.

I woke up late that morning. I was alone in my room much to my chagrin; that means someone had carried me up after the party. I always wondered if they had a hard time seeing as anything but a child considering my figure. I climbed out of bed and checked myself in the mirror. My hair was a wreck, stains from tears were still there, and even my clothing wasn’t on straight. I must have made myself a fool last night. I hope my people don’t think less of me with how I behaved. They were so nice to throw that party to cheer me up, but wound up sobbing my eyes out anyways.

I sighed heavily. Royalty shouldn’t be seen that way.

On the plus side, I was a lot more prepared for what is going to be a fairly rough day for me. All those negative emotions I let out really took a lot of stress off. Maybe I could keep a warm smile again, one that’ll bring hope to my people in dark times!

I looked out the window and onto the city streets below. There was my kingdom, Berry Blitzkrieg, up and about for another day. I smiled at its old fashioned simplicity. Why was it so difficult for a lot of people in the Omniverse to live this way? People in suits and dresses, making their way to an honest day’s pay. The thought of leading a life like that made her warm inside, but was quickly quashed by the rapping on the door, bringing me back to reality.

“Are you awake your highness?” The butler said in a faux chipper tone. “Your royal business in an hour, you need to get ready.”

My heart sank as I remembered what was scheduled for today. A frog in my throat, I choked out a reply.

“I-I’ll be done in a bit!”

I heard the footsteps walking back down the hall he most likely came from. I began to prepare for they day, changing my clothes, washing my face, brushing my long black hair. It gave me time to reflect. My poor kingdom was facing difficult times. Our friends left to create a colony in the Tangled, and when it failed, they returned to us. We were overjoyed when they came back, but they brought with them the crimes they had committed while secluded from the community. Jails packed to the brim, we’ve been forced to execute people for weeks just to keep the numbers down, many were once proud members of the town before. It was a heavy toll on everyone in Berry Blitzkrieg, me most of all. Especially now that freaky dead eyed girl has taken over what was left of the colony. That girl will pay her dues one day.

But last night, I had to give a very difficult order. One so difficult that it drove me to tears. The outburst was the strongest one I’ve had in weeks. I hate it when I make my subjects worry. For me, all this was just the price of being the leader, but it’s far worse when my people suffer along with me.

Finishing up, a leave my room and head down stairs. I immediately don a beautiful smile as I sense my people up ahead.

“Good morning princess!” They say, greeting me with a smile, acting as if the night before didn’t even happen. They guided me to the dining table and I had a breakfast of ham and eggs. Eventually, after having a pleasant but somewhat awkward time with my subjects, I begrudgedly moved towards the exit of my Castle and make my way to the gallows in the middle of town.

The whole town was there. It’s not uncommon for people to come to executions as either a form of entertainment or to see justice done, or at least that was the case before the recent string of hangings where the numbers plummeted. However today I knew they were not here for any of those reasons. They were here for moral support. They knew what I was about to do was rough, but had to be done. I felt pride and love for my people, but at the same time, this also meant I couldn’t back down now.

I climbed upon the platform, waving to my subjects. The executioners prepares five nooses, each attached to a lever. The crowd parts, and I wince as the visage of the guilty appears on my senses. They’re led up to the stairs where they file in a line before me. A middle aged couple, an orc, a young man, and, the thing I’ve been dreading most of all, a child, 5-years-old.

The guilty, shackled both by foot and hand were guided to their nooses and strapped up, standing on tiny platforms that was a lever pull from giving way and a grisly demise. The child was placed in the middle. I had intentionally requested this so I may ease my way into that execution, but not ending with it.

I moved to the first in line, a young man, early 20s, coarse black hair and goatee. I was not shocked someone guilty of such a crime had a goatee. I had a theory that people with odd facial hair had a tendency towards evil. I could never get any science done on that fact though, so I never bothered to make any motions to illegalize it.

“Franceford Viggle.” I said, I couldn’t help chuckling a little bit under my breath at the name. “You are guilty of murder and rape of Hannah Gilford. You’ve been sentenced to death. Any last words?”

I felt his spit impact with my face. I motioned to the executioner as I pulled out a handkerchief. The cranking of a lever being pulled, and the sound of the snapping of a neck rang in my ears as I wiped the criminal saliva off my face. As the executioners pulled out the body of the young man, I moved on to the Orc. To be honest, the orc didn’t stand out enough for me to distinguish; he looked like every other orc.

“Aglar.” I said, wincing at the odd name. “You’ve been found guilty of being born evil and with fornicating with a human woman and barring cross-breed offspring. Any last words?”

“My wife… my daughter… what will happen to them?” He sputtered out in what I’m sure is a weak attempt to gain sympathy. It didn’t work.

“They’ll be held in our prisons until we decide their fates.”

“If you have any soul, please spare them. They don’t deserve any of this.”

“That is for the people of Berry Blitzkrieg to decide. Drop him.”

Drop, snap. Now it was time for the difficult one. The 5-year-old was a little more than three feet tall, had wavy brown hair and glasses. She wore a mangled dirty dress from her time in the child section of the prison. She stood precariously on her little pedestal, her head barely reaching the noose. She was sobbing uncontrollably.

“Amy Johansson.” I said, a frog almost stealing my words. “You’re guilty of being an accessory to both theft and treason. For this you’ve been sentenced to death. Do you have any final words.”

But her only response was the uncontrollable sobbing. This really hurts. I would usually let off a child this young, but letting her live, even in suffering, would only encourage the behavior that her current state brought about. I didn’t like it, but it was for the good of my people.

“I’m sorry.” I said as I signaled to the executioner. I turned away at the last second, trying to not gaze my eyes on her death, but my senses betrayed me and made me feel every second, up to the point where the sudden stop silenced the girl’s sobbing. I wait. I waited until the executioners took down her body and dragged her away from sight. I could still feel her, but it was enough to get my mind back on focus.

I turn my attention to the middle aged couple. They had requested that they’d be hung together, a request that I have honored. Two executioners positioned themselves behind the pair, prepared to pull the levers.

“James and Harriet Black.” She said, still a little choked up from the last execution. “You’re guilty of tax evasion and siding with evil for financial gain. You may have your last words.”

“I have a request.” Spoke the middle-aged man. The women simply continued to look down solemnly “I want someone to deliver a message to our daughter.”

“It’d be dishonorable to deprive you of that right.” I said without hesitation.

“Tell her… I’m sorry. I’m sorry for being a failure of a father. I wasn’t there for you, and that is horrible. I hope you can forgive me for what I’ve done. I thought I was doing what was best for my community.”

“Simple enough.” I said.

“Please, bring that to her. Her name is Sylvia. Sylvia Black. She should be still in Ambrosia-”

“I’ve heard enough.” I replied, signaling the executioner.

Drop, snap. Once again, I fear that I maybe getting too used to this.
