  Dreamtime in the Dream Time
Posted by: Carmelita - 08-29-2016, 02:03 PM - Forum: The Astral Realm - No Replies

The sounds of combat.

Carmelita is fighting. She can’t quite tell who.

Her opponent is Bentley. He’s not in a wheelchair.

The tortoise ducks beneath her shock pistol’s shot and darts forward, punching her gut before tagging her with a sleep dart.

She tumbles into blackness.

Her opponent is Murray. He’s throwing spare parts from the back of the van as she gives chase.

The van jinks as she tries to ram it, and the hippo finally lobs an engine block into the bonnet.

She tumbles into blackness.

Her opponent is Neela. She cracks her whip, the air humid.

The wildcat grabs her strike and hurls her to the floor before slashing down with her whip.

She tumbles into blackness.

Her opponent is the Contessa. They are dueling on top of tanks.

The spider flashes a spiral to divert Carmelita’s strike. She tumbles in front of the tank’s treads.

She tumbles into blackness.

Her opponent is the Panda King. Fireworks crash into the snowy peak around her.

A firework bursts in front of her face, blinding her, and she hears the panda launch a firework at point blank range.

She tumbles into blackness.

Her opponent is Penny. Two humongous mechanical dragons battle it out over the castle.

The earth shakes and the mouse uses a propellor jetpack to avoid crashing to the floor and getting crushed beneath a dragon’s foot.

She tumbles into blackness.

Her opponent is Dimitri. Waves crash down onto the yacht.

The lizard dives off the side as she strikes, dancing through the waves in his scuba gear as she slowly runs out of air.

She tumbles into blackness.

Her opponent is the Cooper clan. They aren’t attacking, just standing in the darkness.

As she strikes out at each racoon, they fade into the shadows, before appearing poised above her.

She stands there waiting for the final blow to fall.

The Guru and Sly are by her side. Sly smiles at her, kisses her on the cheek, and disappears into the darkness.

The Guru murmurs that she needs to learn to defend herself.

She says she can.

The koala looks at the sky, where the racoons remain poised. He murmurs she needs to focus inward.

She says she can’t.

The Guru taps her on the nose with his staff. She can hear Sly, inside her head, calling out encouragement.

She closes her eyes and thrusts out the darkness. Pink light fills her and she floats there, safe.

  Happy Third Omniversary
Posted by: Alex - 08-29-2016, 11:28 AM - Forum: Omniverse Discussion - Replies (26)

August 28th, 2016 (yesterday) marks three years since the Omniverse first launched onto the interwebs.

I just wanted to take this time to thank all of our members for your continued support.  Without all of you willing to donate your time to this crazy little home of mine, the Omniverse just wouldn't be what it is today.  I also want to give a special shout-out to the active members of the staff who are always willing to sacrifice their time reading threads, crunching numbers, going over new applications, and examining prospective moves.  I remember when the staff was four people, and that was a dark and hair-splitting time.

The Omniverse continues to grow and develop as its characters branch out and try to make names for themselves.  Never give up.  Never stop trying to be yourselves and make your mark in the world.  Karl Jak started with 7$ to his name and now he's the most prolific producer in the Omniverse (there's a reference to something real in there, I promise you).  We had a blood-filled Colosseum spectacle.  The Late, Great Wyatt took us all on a drama-filled adventure in the name of trinkets and baubles.  The Institute killed its dragon.  Stars fell across the Omniverse.  As one generation of factions faded into history, another strives to take their place.

I know some of the things that the new year will hold.  I know we'll have an in-character combat league for people to hurt others and have it mean something.  I know that we'll have another competitive spectacle sometime this autumn.  I know I'm working on another project that I hope will come to fruition very soon ™.  Nothing in the Omniverse every stays the same.  People come and go.  Characters arrive and fade into forgotten history.  We live in a world that's constantly changing.

I'm glad you've decided to join us and stay with us.  I hope you've enjoy your time and continue to do so.

Love you all and have a beautiful day.

A toast to all of you (old picture, but I'm too tired to change out of pajamas)

  Hospitality in the darkness
Posted by: Ash Williams - 08-29-2016, 11:07 AM - Forum: The Pale Moors - Replies (6)

"W-woah!!!" yelled Ash coming through the gateway, face planting to the ground. He looks up from the ground and sees the landscape that surrounded him. A field of tall grass he has landed in but the height of the plants was up to his knees. The sky was gloomy surrounded with clouds barely having any sunlight shining. Off in the distance was a forest what seems to be dead trees taking up the land and nothing living can be seen only despair. Crows fly over Ash, cawing to one and another then eventually landing ten yards away from the boomstick wielder. Ash spits out a bit dirt that ended up in his mouth from the hard landing then stumbles a bit to stand up in the middle of the field.

"Where in the hell?" muttered Ash under his breath, confused by what just happened. Wind starts softly blowing on the field moving the grass back and forth, making the newcomer feel the cool breeze. The temperature wasn't too cold or humid but felt alright to be wearing short sleeves or even shorts. Ash made his way by trying to walk through the tall grass which made him have to take big steps. A flock of Crows got startled from Ash's movement making them fly off in a panic with a bunch of racket.

The field was on smooth hill easy to walk down on which below was were the dead forest sits at. It took seven minutes for Ash to get down from the hill and stand at where the forest is at. He inhales a deep breath and says "Well ]this looks welcoming." What gave off a creepy factor of the forest in fact was the dead silence with no sign of anything. "Alrighty Ash, no turning back now. That might've been the only thing we can find in the empty world." said Ash to himself then starts to enter the forest.

As deeper Ash got into the forest, the more darker the environment was becoming due to the amount of trees blocking the sky. The only sound that was coming out of the woods was Ash's footsteps he was making since the ground is mostly covered in dead leaves and some branches. His mind was focusing on keeping an eye out on something since after all it's a creepy forest. A howl of a wolf is heard off in the distance letting Ash know that wolves are present in this forest.

"Oh great, just when I was thinking I could be all alone." said Ash reacting to the noise he just heard. A gust of wind blew above the trees causing the branches to rattle a bit making some dead leaves fall off. Ten minutes in on Ash's journey through the dead forest, nothing much hasn't change with scenery around just more trees that are lifeless. Ash's stomach starts to groan a bit making him hungry and follows up saying "That long nap I took is starting to make me want a meal right about now."

  An Abbysal Abscond
Posted by: Okor - 08-29-2016, 08:40 AM - Forum: The Nexus - Replies (8)

The Leprous Legionnaire shouldered the bulk of bit battle-cannon, a strange silence reigning where there was once the static shrieks of a digital demon. He breathed deeply, filling recently regrown lungs with his acidic atmosphere of choice, the organs cancer-ridden despite existing for little more than an hour.

Worms still writhed within his throat, silken threads repairing the trauma of his decapacitation. He had survived. This was a welcome change from the chaos of the previous Abyss, the betrayal and bloodshed that had ended with the Triumvirate of Titans lying slain upon the blood-stained sands of the arena.

But he was no longer the newborn Prime he once was, still slick behind the ears with the Omnillium-infused waters of his entrance into this accursed reality. In the sunless sepulchres beneath the Earth, he had taken the skulls of Gods. Within the shadow of Death Mountain, he drew the blood of a Draconic Deity.

He was Okor Gods-Damned Paleblood.

He stood taller, his twisted spine unfurling as it raised him above the blank landscape. Hatred and rage coiled around his blackened hearts, choking the life from him as his gangrenous God breathed violent vigour back into his corpse, a cycle of death and rebirth perpetuated by his own plagued psyche.

He wouldn’t have it any other way.

He gazed out over the featureless plane of existence that greeted fresh Primes, its emptiness already healed of the scars of battle. How many lives had been offered up to the Smiling God in this Nexus of power?

He could still feel the phantom sensation of warm blood upon his gauntlets, the hearts of heroes laid bare and torn from their torsos, all in the name of justice.

He had contributed his fair share to the tally, the infernal ledger of life marking every soul slated for their inevitable demise. It was the way of things: You were born, and in time, you died. What happened between was in nobody’s hands but your own.

But someone had been unfortunate enough to have been twice-cursed at their inception. Torn from Nurgle’s welcoming embrace, they were shaped from the Aether by some careless prime, and sent to roam the world with firearm and flame, denied the terrible truths of the realm, and led to their demise.

Fiara would repeat the cycle, without aid. Reborn without the hard-won knowledge of the Abyss by an uncaring Demiurge, and thrown back out into reality to die once more.

He shifted his massive pauldrons as he attempted to sight any other figure open the Nexus, his dual hearts beating sluggishly. Blood still stained his fangs, the vital fluids of a thousand abominations sating the intrinsic lust for death bred into his very being. The stolen life lay heavy in his gut, slowly being digested by both acidic innards and the host of parasites infesting his carcass.

The maddening tides of the Empyrean had flowed, and now they were at their ebb. Twisted talons of warpstuff slid out from his mind, leaving the ragged remnants of his psyche to struggle until the siren lure of slaughter called to him once more.

The grim business of death had been finalized, leaving the unfamiliar task of life in its place.

He sighed, diseased breath passing through an Orthodontist’s worst nightmare. He had to find the prime that forged Fiara, and break the cycle of ignorance and death that threatened to consume their existence.

Corroded ceramite impacted against the nothingness of the Nexus as be began his journey, each stride carrying him towards a yet-unknown destination. Where the hell are the heroes when you need them?

  Origin Trick: Prologue
Posted by: Meriwa - 08-29-2016, 08:16 AM - Forum: The Nexus - Replies (1)

Nezha had tried speaking to that white outline in the darkness, but any attempts to move had been stifled by some sort of paralysis. With his brain struggling to make him move, trash, open his mouth, breathe, he expected the encroaching blackness of oxygen deprivation. "So I was saved only to die, listening to this thing in my final moments." There was but a small problem, the blessed sleep of death would not claim him. No spots dancing across his vision, no creeping blackness from the periphery. Just a steady heartbeat as his brain screamed at him to breathe even though it somehow did not need oxygen at this moment. "Huh? So I guess breathing's no longer a thing?"

The technicolor orb of so called Omnium floated in the air where Omni had left it, waiting for Nezha to grab it. Just one problem, "Hello? Still totally paralyzed over here..." The burning need to breath returned with a vengeance as Omni left, prompting some experimental movements and "Yes!" was the thought followed by a frantic inhalation, "Blessed Air!" and a screaming exhalation as the control network of his body resumed full function. It even seemed as if the world was brightening a smidgeon. Scratch that, it was definitely brightening!

Nezha was confused as all hell. That much was for sure. That Omni character had explained things in only the broadest of strokes. "Well, at least I'm not dead yet," the young man thought as he looked around the area being steadily revealed as his eyes adjusted to the natural lighting of the Nexus, "though for an afterlife this looks kind of shitty. Or at least nothing like I thought it would." Nezha was standing by some huge fountain and... What were those things in the distance? There were people around, so perhaps he could ask them about this place once his sanity decided to rejoin his consciousness. And with that Nezha sat on the ground, trying to... digest these recent events.

  Memories Shrouded by Death
Posted by: Carmelita - 08-29-2016, 06:46 AM - Forum: The Astral Realm - No Replies

Carmelita was stealthed. The light was dim, and she couldn’t see.

“I’ve been bitten!” A young, female voice, in shock.

A flash of forest, a patter of rain.

“For I am-!” Another female voice, noble, cut off by the sound of a wet meaty thud.

A screaming, horrific being stabbing at her with wings of boney protrusions.

“She’s going to kill us all!” Another female voice, panicked and hysterical.

A pair of Fisti-Cuffs, blood dripping onto them in flashes of light.

“You are weak.” A horrifying grumble.

A mine turned mortuary, dripping with rainbow gloop.

“Why don’t you reveal yourself.” A calm, collected, sinister voice.

A flash of flying, struggling with flight controls.

“I’ll blow this whole joint! Hey, is this a dream sequence?” A crazed, cheerful voice.

A vault door, with a small office around it.

“Look, you’re out of your depth. Give up now, and we can all walk away from this.” A man’s voice, some accent she can’t quite place.

Carmelita thinks furiously. Where is she? What does it all mean? How does she bring the perpetrator to justice? When can she-?

A flash of a hatchet arcing towards her neck.

  Exiles Recruitment: The Werewolf
Posted by: Blink - 08-28-2016, 10:54 PM - Forum: The Tangled Green - Replies (2)

Blink kind of liked the growing city of Ambrosia. As she walked down a busy market street, she found herself admiring the populace and what they’ve done here. There were all sorts of strange-looking people and creatures just interacting like everything were typical. She could see a woman with cat whiskers and perky little ears buying something from a tall humanoid figure that seemed to made out of rocks. Anywhere else, these people would be persecuted and laughed at. But here, in the entrance to the murky forest-verse known as the Tangled Greens, these people had found their own little slice of normal. Blink liked it. In fact, she admired it.

She had also found that people of Ambrosia were particularly pleasant to be around. If it wasn’t for the fact that she already had a job with a base of operations in Coruscant, she could see herself settling down here. It helped that she kind of fit in among the oddities that lived in Ambrosia: she was pink-skinned and had pointy elf-ears. As far as they were concerned, she was pretty average looking compared to your typical Ambrosian citizen. When she first arrived in town with two traveling companions, the blue woman that greeted her had no problem directing her to an inn. At the hotel, it was easy and cheap to get a room and directions.

She broke off with her co-workers to do some shopping on her own. She had secured a backpack and some supplies to put in it. She made it to the end of the market street and found the café she had agreed to meet her friends at. Both Rufus and Astrid were sitting in the outside patio already, drinks in front of them. They had their own packs they had purchased hanging off the back of their chairs.

“Guess I’m the slow one, huh?” She asked with a smirk on her face as she moved to sat down. “You guys been waiting long?”

Rufus shook his head. “Nah, we just got here. I ordered you a diet coke.” He nodded his head to the untouched glass of pop in front of her, and she let out a happy sigh when she saw it. She sipped that caffeinated goodness as he watched her, laughing. They were situated under an awning outside, but his bald head managed to seem shiny regardless. Almost as shiny, Blink thought, as the handles to his freshly polished pistols that he kept in shoulder holsters at his side.

After sipping the yummy beverage, Blink’s eyes shifted up to their female companion. Astrid, also known as the Shieldmaiden, was the Viking Warrior they had picked up in Costa del Sol. She had been an easy person to recruit, considering Blink’s prior relationship with her. But despite that, Blink did feel like it had been too easy to convince her. She didn’t like how little she knew about Astrid and her intentions in the Omniverse. But maybe this trip would help fix that. “You alright?” She asked the woman in red cloth.

Astrid looked up, obviously having been distracted. “Huh?” Her face-paint seemed to scrunch together as the woman laughed. “Yes, yes! I’m fine! Sorry, day dreaming, I guess.” She put on a big smile that Blink couldn’t help but return, even if she didn’t quite trust it.

“So, what’s the gameplan, boss?” Rufus asked, looking over at Blink. “We’re all packed for a long trip. Can’t say I’m super excited about it, but I’m ready.” Blink nodded at him. She knew he was a city boy, and trekking through the jungle wasn’t exactly on Rufus’ bucket list.

Blink pulled a file from her backpack and set it on the table. It had the word ‘Exiles Dossier’ on the front of it. “Right now we have a sharpshooter and we have a weapons expert.” She nodded to Rufus and then Astrid. “This time we need to find our muscle. We’re here to find a recruit codenamed The Werewolf.” She looked up to make sure she had both of their attentions. She did. “He used to live in the verse called The Pale Moors. Not sure if he was always a werewolf, or if it was something new, but something happened and he left to come here. To the Tangled Greens. “

“Have we considered that he’s actually here, in town?” Rufus asked. “I mean, I’ve seen some pretty crazy figures here. Wouldn’t be a stretch to say there’s a werewolf or two here.”

Blink nodded. “Yea, I had the same thought. The dossier suggests that he’s been mostly involved in a conflict between two orc tribes. But I think it’s reasonable to assume he at least came through this town when he first got here. It’s pretty werewolf-friendly. So before we leave, we’ll get some information about him.”

Astrid finally spoke up. “Why are we recruiting this werewolf, anyway?” Rufus and Blink both looked up at her with confused looks. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to sound argumentative, but…something must have happened for him to leave the Moors and come here. If he’s out in the jungle somewhere, he probably wants to be left alone. Right?”

Rufus didn’t have anything to say, so he looked over at Blink, as if waiting for an answer as well. Claire bit her fuchsia lip as she nodded in agreement. “You’re right, he probably wants to be left alone. But…I picked this dossier because I think he also needs our help. And that’s what I do.” She put her finger on the table, as if pointing down to emphasize her next point. Her voice got serious as green eyes narrowed. “I bring people back from terrible places. I give them second chances.”

Astrid smiled, seeming to like her response. But Rufus spoke up. “What if he doesn’t want a second chance?” Blink looked at him. Rufus shrugged. “I get it, he was a good guy and people died and he left. But what if he doesn’t deserve a second chance?” Blink didn’t even hesitate. “What if he does? Who are we to deny him a chance.” She didn’t say it out loud, but she also felt that if Guu, the old man funding their little super-team, had a dossier on this Werewolf then it was at least worth investigating. Neither one of them said anything, so she continued. “So we’re gonna ask around town, then we’re going out into the Greens to find him. Any issues?”

Rufus shook his head negative. Blink glanced at Astrid. He was day dreaming again, looking off into the street. Blink coughed to get her attention. “Huh, what? Yea, I’m good!” Both Blink and Rufus laughed. Astrid blushed. “Sorry, day dreaming again.”

Blink chuckled wordlessly as she sipped her diet coke again. She was happy that had picked this dossier. She felt like it was the right thing to do. Hopefully whoever this Werewolf was agreed with her…because they were going right into his backyard. Whether they were welcome or not.

August Monthly Accolades (Until September 12th)
Posted by: Dark Link - 08-28-2016, 01:25 AM - Forum: Bookkeeping Archive - Replies (13)

Summer days are almost over, but the proverbial pens remain heated, so it is time to recognise the creative quality of our members. Welcome to the August edition of the Monthly Accolades!

For those of you who are unaware, the Accolades involve nominating (and later, voting for) those who have outdone themselves in a particular area each month. For variety's sake, the categories for each month may be different.

You have until September 4th to nominate your choices. After that, we will proceed to the voting phase where members will vote among the two individuals with the most nominations for each category. An exception to this is if someone manages to get 5+ more nominations than the runner-up, in which case that person becomes the winner by default.

If you wish to participate, think of who stood out the most in a particular category this month and post your choice, along with a 2-3 sentence long explanation, in this thread. You are not barred from nominating your own characters/threads, nor do you have to fill out all the categories.

The winners will become this month's "Community Stars". And what benefits does this bring? Here is an explanation, courtesy of Alex:

(07-26-2016, 11:34 AM)Alex Wrote: As part of being voted as a Community Star/User of the Month (I use the terms interchangeable mainly because Community Star is less formal-sounding than User of the Month), these members gain a color (you must select this in your User CP) and access to the Community Stars R&D forum.  In the past this was my pseudo-private forum, but I changed the name so people are aware they can use it if they please.  I do a lot of brainstorming in there and pre-planning for stuff.  Stars are welcome to share their thoughts and their own ideas if they desire.  Or don't -- it's optional.

Community Stars R&D - http://omniverse-rpg.com/forumdisplay.php?fid=36 (Note this will only work if you're part of the User of the Month User Group)

Edit - Forum access is for the month following a member's selection as a Community Star, and this is irregardless of which 'accolade' you were selected for.

And now for this month's categories:

‘Best’ Character – Which character has you engaged the most?

‘Best’ Writer – Which writer wowed you the most?

Most Helpful – A staffer or a member who gave you amazing feedback on a story or was simply there to help you sort out some of your problems.

Rising Star – Which up-and-coming member stands at the crème of the crop? (must have joined within the last month and a half or have less than 8000 OM)

'Best' Story – What story did you find most riveting/entertaining? (For the sake of giving smaller threads a chance to shine, Dante's Abyss is automatically excluded from the running)

'Best' DA '16 Participant - This year's Summer Syntech Event has now come to a close. Going in a new and unexpected direction, it ultimately produced several winners, all of them well-deserving of the title. That said, opinions will inevitably vary on who among them was the best, and some might even favour a person that dropped off before the end. So we'd like to hear your thoughts. Which participant in DA '16 impressed you the most?

'Best' NPC – What non-player character (can be a site, personal, or story NPC) entertained you the most (for whatever reason). Please note who the 'owner' of said NPC is, just in case I am not familiar with them.

Purple Ribbon - Consider this a bonus category for nominating someone who, while they may not be the best and have all the twitter followers, you believe deserves to be recognized for what they bring the the Omniverse. (The winner must be a DIFFERENT person than last month's winner; the July winner was Dark Link)

  Character Switch: Kerrigan
Posted by: Sarah Kerrigan - 08-27-2016, 09:54 PM - Forum: Joining - Replies (16)

Character name: Sarah Kerrigan/The Queen Of Blades

Character source: Starcraft: Brood War

Character history:

Sarah Kerrigan was taken from her new rule over the Koprulu sector right after the events of Brood War.

(Will do full history with Roster)

Physical Description:

Stats:
ATK: 2
DEF: 2
SPD: 2
TEC: 4

Starting Proficiencies: (3200)
Ranged Proficiency (1000)
Physical Proficiency (1000)
Homing Proficiency (600)
Ranged Materialize Proficiency (600)

Starting Powers: (2200)
Master Acrobat
Basic Super Jumping
Telepathy

Starting Moves:

Psychic Grip - 600 OM
Kerrigan grabs an opponent by the throat and channels psychic energy into their body. this does no extra damage compared to normally choking someone, but makes it half as easy to glean any insight into their thoughts and feelings.

After grabbing an opponent, any character with lower TEC than Kerrigan's will have their surface thoughts read in a matter of seconds - someone with 1 point lower might be able to hang on for roughly five to ten seconds, while someone with less than half of Kerrigan's TEC would be read almost instantly. If Kerrigan wishes to look harder, into more personal thoughts, she'd need to somehow grip the person for at least ten seconds or longer, up to thirty if the TEC difference is very close.
Against someone with equal TEC, this move would only allow her to read surface thoughts, and against someone with higher TEC the move will fail entirely.

Wing Blades - 600 om
A pair of "wings" across Kerrigan's back, these cruel spikes of bone are as durable and damaging as any mortal blade. The wings measure roughly 5 feet in length, and swipe at opponents with a wicked edge, but they are more of a quick weapon than a brutal one, leaving a series of lighter cuts on an opponent, similar to the slash of a dagger.
The Wings also function as secondary limbs of Kerrigan, and she's quite capable of gripping or holding things with them.

Needle spines - 900 OM
Kerrigan signals an area mentally, and a hydralisk appears within 20 feet of kerrigan, unburrowing from a hidden position, before firing a barrage of ten needle spines at the target. The hydralisk takes roughly a second to unburrow and aim, and the spines move at the speed of a bullet. Each individual spine is not very damaging, though in numbers they can add up.
At this point, the hydralisk can either reburrow or continue to fire for up to five seconds, firing a new barrage every second. The hydralisk is very fragile however, and will go down to any attack.
Alternatively, Kerrigan can concentrate for up to five seconds in order to create a trio of the creatures, all of which fire a single barrage before reburrowing.

Kerrigan is able to move around freely as the Hydralisks attack, but due to her focus being split into controlling the hydralisks and moving herself, She is incapable of using any of her other psionic powers, and the distraction created by commanding the hydralisks reduces her technical skill in combat, effectively lowering her hand-to-hand combat abilities while she focuses. it also makes her less able to read anything else about an opponent until she desummons the hydralisks.
Super Moves

Tier 1 Defensive Super-move - Hallucination - 600 OM

Kerrigan has learned much from her battles with the protoss - the ability to create a psychic after-image among them! The image appears to be a perfect physical and mental duplicate of kerrigan to the average onlooker, though without the substance, and Kerrigan uses this in order to redirect an attempted attack at an expendable copy. This copy is draining to create though, costing her 1 SP to produce.

(Have calculated new OM after switching to be  8693.93 and this number is reflected in move/ability spending)
Spent OM: 8100.0
