Episode VIII, Coruscant: Part 1 (The Hero This City Needs Quest) [M]
Posted by: Sarah Kerrigan - 05-24-2017, 10:18 PM - Forum: Coruscant - Replies (3)

Kerrigan gritted her teeth in exasperation, as the rain pitter-pattered softly off of her carapace. Not even the rain was allowed to sit upon her magnificent form, and she noticed a few different passersby following the rain’s example and avoiding contact with Kerrigan as much as possible.

It could have been the palm-sized bursts of greenish-yellow electricity that sparked all around her. Or it could simply be the angry scowl Kerrigan had chosen to wear as she walked down Coruscant’s city streets.

She’d won. She hadn’t destroyed Darkshire, but she’d won. Her zerg had taken the chance to rampage. She’d dealt a crippling blow to one of her eventual enemies. She’d ruined the morale of the fighters that defended it, ruined fortifications that might take months to repair, improved her own prestige and “clout” in the omniverse proper, and tested the new capabilities of her swarm and their opposition. Every one of Kerrigan’s expected goals had been achieved.

That didn’t take away from the humiliation, the pain, or the chilling rage that now powered and focused Kerrigan’s every move. She was willing to accept a defeat at the hands of a being with the power and experience of Strazio Rockwell, but the fact that the worm known as Hiro took so much of the credit for his pitiful efforts…

Sarah’s glare turned to a wicked grin. The things she would do to that miserable excuse for a fighter…

Well, Kerrigan mused. she couldn’t have the pleasure of that until she finished with her next piece of business at the very least, now could she?

Kerrigan had spent a good amount of time in the nexus, after her angered revival, checking and re-checking everything the Omniverse had… of value, that is. Anything that was related to Guu was fairly quickly discarded after the pointless nature of her postings was apparent, for instance.

What she had figured out, however, especially after seeing the limitations she currently held as a new prime, was that she simply couldn’t overpower these fools with  just her weakened swarm, at least as it was now.

To that end, she would need to slowly strengthen herself, taking what Omnilium and other resources she could siphon from around the area, and it seemed the Empire had the rainbow-colored currency to spare.

Past that… well, that all depended on the events of the next few months. Between whispers of dark power and teams of primes being dispatched practically everywhere, and this upcoming "Dante's Abyss", Kerrigan supposed she might have to lay low for a brief while, until the Omniverse's guard was considerably less tight. Still, she had a plan, she had the time to empower herself, and she had the location for a new hive cluster already planned.

Now, she just needed to actually enact her plan, and with the current state of the Omniverse, as long as she was careful, it would be easier than taking candy from a baby.. Sarah’s glare snapped to a chilling grin, far too quickly to look natural on her features. She’d walked all the way from the nexus to here to work on the first part of her plan: Menial as it would be, it appeared she was going to have to work to curry favor with this “Empire”, in order to gain access to some fraction of the resources they had to offer.

The mere idea of it formed like a hot coal of anger in the pit of her stomach, but for now, she’d play the part of an eager prime looking for a spot of worth in this city. Someone who was fully willing to work for Palpatine, not looking forward to the day she could force him to kneel..

Meanwhile, Kerrigan had been informed by her former compatriot Sabrina (who had, regrettably, vanished off the face of the earth, at least if Kerrigan’s repeated attempts at calling her meant anything.) that Tier 7 was still quiet, barren, and dark.
A perfect place to carry out some of her more pressing experiments, especially with her need to discover new and effective ways to make use of Omnilium, and merge that understanding with the Zergs biological perfection.

A wicked grin crossed her face. Really, she was just recycling some wasted trash, in the end. Perfectly acceptable in the Empire’s eyes.

  Joining: Emily Kaldwin
Posted by: Emily Kaldwin - 05-24-2017, 06:18 PM - Forum: Joining - Replies (3)

Character name: Emily Kaldwin
Character source: Dishonored 2

Character history: She was born a bastard by strict definitions, and the nature of bastards had always been suspect in their Kingdom. Her mother was an Empress, and her father the Empress' bodyguard. There was much to be said for the circumstances that ended in the birth of the Princess, but little of it was heard, for little of it was known.

In the twilight years of her childhood, whilst her soul teetered on the brink of becoming a privileged teenager, an event darkened the doorsteps of both commonfolk and Royalty alike. When it first began there was no name for it - only a dawning realization that sickness and corruption were spilling out over the streets in a flash flood the uneducated could have never foreseen. ...but everyone felt it.

The Rat Plague.

The Empress was assassinated in the days following the outbreak, and the Kingdom fell into turmoil. Bodies lay bloating in the streets, in the sewers, and in the alleys where the very rats who bore the root cause of the Plague feasted on the burgeoning spoils of their sewn harvest.

With her mother gone and her father missing, young Emily was held prisoner and spent her time drawing. Casting eyes outward from barred windows she spilled scenes of violence upon parchment in ink from the blade of a quill. The drawings of this ten year old girl reflected her internal turmoil, and yet, they reflected the turmoil of the Kingdom in a depth more honest than any journalist could capture.

...as all things do, the plague came to pass, and so too did the tribulations of the Princess, soon to be the Empress Regent.

A swath of violence carved the niche of her father's return into the world while one by one the domino line of usurper and followers therein collapsed under a dark sign - tales of a man in a mask felling corrupt soldier and civilian alike spread like wildfire in the days preceding.

And then he arrived, freeing his daughter like a shadow in the night. Blood spattered on the walls and a cold mask pressing against her cheek were some of the snippets young Emily retained.

In the years afterward, she was sculpted in the image of Corvo Attano - her father, her protector, and the Outsider's marked man.

...a tale Emily herself would find herself continuing, with an Outsider's mark of her own on her hand.

Starting Moves:

Flintlock Pistol (300) - Emily fires a hip-holstered flint-lock pistol. The damn thing is pretty out of date compared to some, but she's awfully quick on the draw and reload (proportional to speed and technique anyway), and it packs a decent punch at the disadvantage of having only one shot, and needing to be reloaded on the fly much to the chagrin of a casual pistol user.

I confirm that I have read and agreed to the Rules of Conduct. Yes.

Where did you find us? Well, I've been a part of this before, and I know a number of users here, though it was Lilith who actually reignited my interest.

A Banquet set for Davy Jones
Posted by: The Humble Sage - 05-24-2017, 02:55 AM - Forum: The Vasty Deep - Replies (6)

The Sage awoke with a start as the wall he had hidden behind splintered into wooden shards. Blinking away the last echoes of his astral-induced coma, the Sage staggered to his feet. Never a moment’s peace in this place. He thought with regret as four sharply dressed sailors filed into his hidden room. They were only armed with cutlasses and pistols, though the make of these weapons looked solid, and more advanced than the flintlocks that the Sage had seen others use in this world. Even if he had been expecting their arrival, the Sage was not confident he would have succeeded in the exchange so outnumbered. In his disoriented state, he did not even make an attempt, instead waiting calmly as the sailor’s commander stepped through the breach.

He was not an old man. A captain in his early thirties, likely a star officer given the decorations that adorned his jacket. A neatly trimmed blonde moustache perched above his firm jawline. He swept into the room with a practiced gait, the imperial navy’s circular symbol bright white against his properly trimmed gray-green suit. Not a field commander then, the Sage thought as the officer took in the hidden room with an air of mild disappointment, The Sea would take that pomp from your step quite quickly. You probably don’t even run the ship, do you? Just issue commands from the captain’s quarters. Despite himself, the Sage’s mouth twitched upwards in smug confidence, a fact the officer took notice of quickly. The imperial’s brow furrowed as he addressed his newest find.

“What are you smirking at?” the voice came sharply, the tone of one who isn’t used to dissent or questioning. A voice of a leader not yet ready for their post. The Sage thought, though he made sure to contain his emotions as the officer continued. “Is this some kind of joke to you, Stowaway? Well speak up!”

The Sage’s response was much more at ease, he was outnumbered five to one, and there was no telling how many more of the imperials were scuttling about the vessel. This would not be a fight for him to wage today.

“Good sir, I am afraid that my erstwhile captain has sold me out to you. In truth, I would confess myself more disappointed were it not for the fact that he made his intentions so clear that I cannot have missed them. It would seem…” his rambling was interrupted by a sharp interjection from the officer, his face a taunt mass of consternation.

“You’re not the captain then.” It was a declaration not a question, and the Sage shook his head with genuine perplexity. Was Daedlin not the one to tip them off? The Sage had assumed that his supposed dwarf friend had been behind the imperial’s arrival. “That’s no help to me!” the imperial shouted and stormed out of the hidden room, his guards taking the Sage along with them as they left.

“He’s a dwarf, if that’s any help.” The Sage called up as the officer ascended the stairs to the main deck.
“And you expect me to trust your words? No law-abiding prime hides in a room with no doors!” his captor shot back as he stalked onto the deck. The Sage followed and was set down with the rest of the crew, a score or so of terrified boys who had clearly never been detained before. The Officer strolled up and down the lot of them, some of the crew looking down, while others stared wide-eyed at the dozen Imperial sailors who had boarded the ship.

“You all are sorry excuses for seamen!” the officer shouted, eyes raging as he stared down the crew, “Your captain disappears and not a one of you can tell when it happened? He took your Rowboat to do it! Not a man among you saw him leave?”

The Sage’s confusion and incredulity only rose as none of the crew spoke up in dissent. This course of action didn’t make any sense. The dwarf had abandoned a brand-new crew and vessel, he would be losing a huge amount from this flight, far more than he could from a simple confiscation of illicit goods. And how had he evaded the Navy as well? The Sage quickly glanced at the surrounding ocean. A large fog-bank billowed to the east, and the sun was approaching its descent. He would guess that there were but a few hours of good daylight remaining, but certainly enough that the Imperials should have been able to spot a Row boat travelling far by itself. He must have hidden in the fog. The Sage reasoned, the only islands in sight were small tufts of sand, sporting only the most basic vegetation, an unlikely choice of self-marooning. But why had he left to begin with?

“How long were you pursuing this vessel?” The Sage asked, the Officer turned sharply to face him, a look of self-satisfaction clear on his face.

“Since the inspection. It wasn’t hard.” The man bragged. The Sage sighed internally, he had no idea how long he had spent in the Astral realm, so the answer did nothing to assist him with his questions, “We kept a discrete pace, intending to follow you to whatever little hideaway you smugglers have been using now. But your vessel stopped moving. Casting anchor in here in the middle of nothing.”

At this one of the crew-members, a lad barely old enough to have started a beard. “Daedlin said we would wait out the fog bank! He said he wasn’t interested in smashing into any rocks on such a routine journey.”

Now the officer was sharing the Sage’s look of confusion, “Routine journey? We’re nearer to the gate to the Frozen fields than any conceivable trading port!” Ahh, It would seem I have been in the Astral Realm for some time then. the Sage thought with mild surprise. As if resolving its own dilemma, his stomach decided to confirm the length of time it had been emptied, momentarily distracting him as the officer continued to ponder incredulously.

“You must have a hidden port in this sector, it’s the only explanation! With the size of your vessel, you won’t make it back to civilization before running out of supplies! Even my own crew,” and he gestured back to the Galleon, smaller than many the Sage had seen fly imperial colors, that waited a short distance away, “will have to take half portions to make it back with a comfortable margin! This ship has been sent on a…” the officer trailed off his gaze shifted watching something off in the distance. “…Suicide mission…”

The Sage followed his gaze. There exiting the fog-bank with alarming speed, was possibly the most powerful warship the Sage had ever seen. It could best be compared to a Trireme with a concave bow and jutting ram, but the juggernaut towered out of the water, four full rows of cannons extended from each side, well over a hundred by the Sage’s estimate. Its bow was easily fifteen feet above their deck, and both the front and rear of the Warship had armored decks above the center. No sails were visible above the goliath vessel, for indeed what sails could be enough to propel such a monstrosity at speed? But nevertheless, it moved towards them, not riding the waves but plowing directly through them with an unearthly speed for a vessel that large. Its concave front was ornately painted, and a single cannon extended from the mouth of the laughing dwarf who adorned the warship’s prow. The Black flag of Piracy flew atop its prow, tall enough that no mast was needed.

The Sage was rendered speechless by the sight, unable to comprehend the craftsmanship that would be required to render such a tremendous vessel waterborne. As they stood there, mouth agape, a loud crack split the air, and a whistling cannonball struck the water, narrowly missing the Imperial Galleon. The Sage’s heart sunk as his suspicions seemed almost inevitable. Truly, they all had been sent on a suicide mission.

Quote:Enjoy this weird M-Rated exposition post. Although sometimes it's subtle, Luci is addressing several different storylines with other pcs, including Harlan Higgs, Dr Doom, Yuki, Renji, and Jacket.

***

Luci opens her kaleidoscopic eyes and takes in the starkly unfamiliar surroundings of her small bedroom. Although she had gone to sleep in this very bed just one night ago, she had spent an unquantifiable amount of relative time in the Astral Realm, getting lost deep within the dream layers of herself and her companions. The journey has changed her; Luci breathes in, and the world seemed to breath with her. She observes that her already tenuous grip on reality is now hanging by a thread as the Astral Realm juxtaposes itself ever stronger into Luci's perception of Corruscant.

The stained and peeling wallpaper is lit dimly by her multi-colored bio-luminescence, projecting a softly shifting light show on her otherwise bleak living space. Luci sits up and reaches a hand out shakily for a cigarette stubbed out in the ashtray next to her bed and lights it. The smoke she exhales is a vibrant electric blue, and she watches it envelope her body. She runs a hand through her long hair, causing a small cascade of glitter to fall, and she stretches. She remembers that Yuki had spent the night with her, so long ago it seems, and she sees that he is not there, and she knows where he is.

Luci seems to stare off into the distance as she searches mentally for a concentrated ball of her power; a car bomb. She realizes it has been discharged, and sighs. She reaches into a drawer next to her bed and pulls out a sharp arrowhead, then cuts deep into her palm, causing metallic rainbow blood to pool in her hand. She then solemnly dips her three fingers into the blood and wipes three lines of glowing warpaint on her face under each eye.

The President of the Westside Knife Ear Warriors gets out of bed and picks out a cute blue spaghetti strap to throw on. The Astral Realm starts to grow louder in her ears, and she realizes she is hearing the thoughts of Weasel as she comes up the stairs to Luci's room. The President of the Westside Hufflepunks has a strange kind of emotion boiling up inside her; apprehension. Luci opens the door a second before Weasel knocks.

Weasel's pierced face registers surprise only for a moment, and the she takes in the lines of warpaint the mark Luci as the President of the Westside Knife Ear Warriors.

"Well," says Weasel neutrally. "I guess you've heard the news, President Perky Tits."

***

It seemed that assassination is not a dealbreaker for Weasel, inasmuch as Moss Illidian, the former President of the Westside Knife Ear Warrirors, was a fucking pain her ass. Luci is spiking Weasle's bright red mohawk, a cigarette hanging from her lip, as the punk rawk witch briefs her on the latest gang politics. Technically, Weasel and the Hufflepunks are a relatively ungoverned drug cartel that allies with the Westside against the Orc Mafia for matters of convenience. Unofficially, Weasel has become Luci's second in command, as Luci continues to make power plays to gain influence over the Westside council. Weasel follows the advice and sometimes the orders of Luci, and keeps an ear out for her on the street.

"So," Weasel continues as Luci straightens the mohawk. "We found the gang that wiped out the Metalheads. A new outfit, the Gentlemen Jacks. They're strong, they have a serious street presence, and they know how to work with the neighborhood, and they got good product. That Amaranth, it's not hard stuff, but it's fucking popular. So I sent Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dipshit to go check out the show, and the Jacks had an Ace in the Hole."

Stupid wordplay aside, Luci knows enough Corruscant street slang to pick up the reference.

"A Prime?" Luci asks curiously. Weasel nods, fucking up Luci's attempt to keep the mohawk standing, as usual.

"Yeah, a big one." the witch says. "Harlan Higgs. He's something else, his gang has a lock on Little New York, but he's not on good terms with the tusk fuckers. The twins weren't the only ones who decided to take a look at the Cody Chode show. A pack of Ork Warryorz came by too, looks like Gorgosh's gang, but we can't be sure, the corpses were pretty fucked. They tried shooting up the place, but the Jacks shut the down hard. After that, we managed to open up an avenue for negotiations. Part of that is taking care of that thing though."

Luci nods, thinking, as she hands the ciggarrette to Weasel. Weasel instead reaches up and passes a ticket into Luci's hand. Luci sees the Astral realm layer itself over reality, and a spiral pattern and glowing purple cross appear to pulse on the ticket.

"That's for you." Weasel adds. "He says you'd know how to get in contact with him."

Luci nods, then steps away from Weasel.

She shakes her trusty magic spraycan and then paints a cartoony icon of a rabbit in white on her wall. The rabbit's eyes blink.

Luci holds the ticket up to the painting, and the rabbit's nose twitches as it smells the ticket. Luci then leans in to whisper into the rabbit's ear. The rabbit nods, and moments later is bounding out the window, still two dimensional, a living painting scurrying to deliver a message. Weasel does not seem phased.

"And that's just the tip of the cock," Weasel says. "You won't believe what Chirpa got his hands on."

Luci sighs. "Is this what being President is like?" she asks.

Weasel grins and turns to face Luci, her eyes mischievous.

"There are perks."

***

The sex was good, Luci reflects as she watches the Hufflepunk shimmy into her jeans. The punk rock gangster was rough, but very eager, and very experienced despite her young age.

"But yeah," says the Hufflepunk casually, her face nearly as red as her hair, breathing heavily. "Chirpa scrounged up some new tech, some badass droid. He says he thinks he can make more, reverse engineer them you know? He wants to use them for that job in T6, but he says it will cost some money. He'll need at least-"

"Give it to him," Luci says without hesitation.

Weasel nods, her mohawk wobbling.

***

"So," says Weasel casually to Luci as the women walk down the winding staircase of the Hufflepunk Hideout. "Are you going to tell me why to have a dataverse device duct-taped to your hand?"

Luci just shrugs. "I'm expecting a visitor."

Weasel grins. "You got along with the last one pretty well, right? And now I see why..."

***

"What the fuck is this?" Luci asks reasonably. Five scantily clad women are passed out in a pile of drug paraphernalia in the living room. Two of them Luci recognize as Danny and Dungbomb, a pair of reasonably competent Hufflepunks. The other three are Twi'leks that Luci has never seen before.

"Some blow ins," says Weasel. "My goons gotta have fun too."

Luci claps her hands loudly, startling the women into groggy, head-achey wakefulness. Danny and Dungbomb leap up when they see Weasel and Luci's stern faces, and the Twi'lek take their cue and stand sheepishly next to them. All the girls are trying not to giggle. Luci eyes them suspiciously, particularly a green Twi'lek with Asain features and big scared eyes.

"Hmm," Luci says as she sizes them up. "I got some work for you girls."

[NPC] More than just a butler. (Alfred Pennyworth)
Posted by: Todd Ingram - 05-23-2017, 02:47 PM - Forum: Coruscant - Replies (2)

It has been three weeks since Batman's first appearance in Coruscant. News about the high speed chase started to linger. Every now and then a message appears on the dataverse of some random citizen that witnessed the Batman beating the crap out of some local scum. It seems the word started to get out slowly that a new player had entered the board. Bruce sat comfortable on a couch watching the news. He rented a penthouse apartment at the upper tier of Coruscant, it was no Wayne manor but while he was here he still needed a proper place to stay. His dual identity was a project that required constant work. As long as Bruce Wayne was in Coruscant doing what he does best, Batman was able to roam the verses with a safe hideout to fall back to. If there's anything he's learned over the past few years it's that you always need a place to fall back to in order to catch your breath.

The apartment symbolized his prosperity, pieces of art he has never seen before decorated his halls. This world was fascinating to say the least. Creating his own piece of the mansion made him feel like home just a bit more. With several bedrooms, two bathrooms, an enormous kitchen and a few 'hobby' rooms he'd be able to play the part of millionaire playboy for the outside world. Even though it was a mask of who he really was, it was a comfortable mask.

Bruce continued to watch the news as a familiar voice, laminated with a British accent, interrupted the newsreader,
"Master Wayne, didn't I ask you to stop putting your feet on the table? Must we do this in every universe you drag me out to?"

From behind the couch Alfred Pennyworth stood with a stern frown upon his face. Alfred has been Bruce's butler and family for as long as Bruce could remember. Being a pillar of support throughout his life this man was the closest thing he has had as a father, brother, preacher and life coach. The slightly older man was wearing a traditional butlers outfit, the spotless black jacket, white shirt and black tie on top of a ironed black pair of pants, all suited him perfectly. "You brought me here to assist you in this lunacy, not to be your maid, master Wayne. You might want to remember that." Bruce listened and placed his feet back on the ground. Alfred wasn't your traditional butler, he has been aiding Batman from the moment Bruce decided to wear the cowl. Never did his loyalty waver, not even when he met his end by one of the dictator Kent's cowardly plan.

The TV suddenly got a tad louder as Karl Jak's face got a nice close up on the screen, "Geeeeeeeeeeeeeet ready for another Dante's Abyss! It's coming soon! Don't miss it! We have it all, primes, action, babes, betrayal and of course a new champion at the end! Signups for primes are soon at a local hub nearby!" Bruce muted the annoying voice coming from the TV and returned his attention to Alfred.

"I never intended to bring you here in the first place. This whole thing is new to me as well. My research showed it was possible for primes to summon allies, and when I tried you actually showed up, I mean, it's actually you." Alfred's passing was clearly hard for the millionaire, he was never the one to properly show emotions but Alfred was with him long enough to notice the tiny details.

"That's quite alright master Wayne, though would it have killed you to shave a few years off?"

  Omnilium, Summoning, and Science.
Posted by: Dane Regan - 05-23-2017, 10:53 AM - Forum: Omniverse Discussion - Replies (10)

Quick note: This isn't a question thread. It's more of a speculation thing. TL;DR at the bottom, I ramble. Sorry.

As far as I'm aware, no player has (at least recently) tried to do any Omnilium based research. From the basic level of "what are the rules of summoning?" to the more complex "how does it work?" and "what is it made of?" no one has really tried anything explicitly.

The actual rules are naturally the same as the site rules. But, to our characters, those don't exist. And, as far as I'm aware, there's no official rule that says "you cannot summon laser gun unless you've seen a laser gun" for example. The established canon is that you just need to be able to visualise it. So an imaginative character can try to make anything. Of course, it's fairly obvious someone can't, or shouldn't, suddenly be able to visualise and summon something they'd have no reason to consider or imagine. Like a spartan coming out the fountain for the first time and getting a machine gun.

The only site rules for summoning are (hopefully I'm not missing anything):
  • Anything larger than a small shack or vehicle probably costs you site OM.
  • No flying vehicles can be summoned outside of Camelot, Coruscant, and the Dataverse.
  • The limiting with well known secondaries and ones from outside your character's source. As well as the number of secondaries you can summon.
  • Anything that gives you an actual mechanical benefit costs site OM.
  • It takes at least 3 minutes. You can't move and have to concentrate.
  • Anything that doesn't cost site OM is handwaved (so for rp purposes still costs a little bit).
This might seem simple. But for your characters, some things "cost" them much more than others. And some things just can't be made in some areas. Naturally, an inquisitive character would probably be confused at this. Or maybe just assuming Omni is messing with them.

Suppose, for example, someone builds a mansion with raw materials. That would count as a base in the rule system, and thus cost OM. But they never actually summoned anything. So, unless you spend about 10k words describing it (ignoring rest points), suddenly they've been drained of Omnilium. What would happen? Would it suddenly collapse should they not pay the OM?

The last more of a gaming the system type thing. This following would probably be more confusing (I might properly write it after DA some day), and it fits within the rules:
Quote:[Somewhere in the Vasty Deep, on a small island.]

Dane wiped the sweat off his brow as he looked at his creation. He'd show Omni, he thought. The Omnilium couldn't tell him what he was able to do. At last, he had finished building a hot air balloon. The wind was just right, so it should be able to carry him over to the Nexus gate.

It was strange. Dane hated the rocking of boats. It made him sick. Yet he had no problem sitting high up in the sky. All that was left was test his creation. The calculations checked out, the warmed air should easily be able to lift him, the balloon, and the basket.

And so, Dane sat inside and pulled down the cord. The flames roared. The balloon rippled. But, inexplicably, the vehicle failed to rise. Why? It should be flying. Why wasn't it?
Suddenly, you have an instance where physics doesn't seem to be working. All to fit the balancing rules. To Dane, it looks like Omni is just being a jerk to him. We know the valid reasoning as to why, but the characters don't.
Quote:[Continuation]

Leaving the flames on, Dane hopped out of the basket to take a better look. Surely it would at least feel lighter now that the air was hot. Touching the base from the sides, he found he was able to raise it. Was the lift generated simply not enough? He pondered.

He removed his hands and stepped back, hoping to let balloon fall to the ground so he could examine it further. The opposite occurred. Up into the sky the hot air balloon rose, deprived of its rider and free to drift as it pleased.

"Screw it, I'm swimming," Dane stated in annoyance. It seemed the rules of this world wouldn't be bent so easily.

If anyone was in the Oververse as these events transpired, they might just be able to hear Omni's cackling laughter.

Of course, that could be continued with more sketches added as Dane attempts to break the rules or catch Omni out. Naturally every attempt would fail in some way. Either the balloon would pop. The basket would detach. The hot air balloon would fly away without him. Similar things might occur for a helicopter or plane. Such as it ejecting Dane and taking off without him.

Besides those two aspects, Omnilium, to your characters, follows some generic rules: you have to be able to visualise it, if it give you a combat advantage it costs more, it generally can't be larger than a vehicle. But how does it work? How would a character conclude summoning works?

The three main conclusions I can think of are:
  • It's a trade with Omni, hence the varying prices.
  • It's a ball of energy. Energy is made into matter. Using too much at once drains you.
  • It summons things similarly to how Primes were summoned. But grabbing them from other worlds and bringing them here. (This is definitely wrong, but a character might conclude it). So cost is based on how valuable those items were in the other world.
And then there's the changed damage and strength of moves in the Omniverse compared to prior. Everything is uniform. More drawbacks => more damage. A prime might notice this, and try to "game" the system to have stronger moves (with drawbacks) and such. Generally, there's a lot of research to do. And lots of tests to be done.

There's also the case that while many people use magic, lots of people use it in different ways. Some with words or gestures, some without. The Omniverse caters to all, even though some ideas utilise a "magic field" and such. And some concepts of magic conflict.

The final topic is time dilation. As we know, due to our real lives, time goes faster at some places compared to others. So a 30 minute fight could last a week elsewhere. To a character, it probably doesn't seem completely random, as the areas with more action or interaction are slower. An idea might be to give people watches and compare with everyone giving descriptions of what they did. If you put a watch somewhere in the middle of nowhere and locked it in an abandoned watch, would it run at the standard time? Would it run infinitely fast? Of course, you won't know until you open the box, by which it'll run at normal speed. But you could have it keep track of days and such.

Quick conspiracy theory: If the Omnilium summons things based on what we think, is it reading our minds? Does that mean Omni knows what our characters are thinking? Our characters also know how to use Omnilium innately, so does that mean Omni messed with their brain?  :ttiot:

There's a lot for one prime to try and do by themselves, and a lot of tests involving others. Looking at Omnilium under a microscope, hitting it with a hammer, trying to dilute it, and testing the above. As well as comparing people's moves under standard conditions. So, if there's not one already, we could have a science club. Not a faction, it wouldn't have a political stance. Just a club set up somewhere with a nice lab and such. Not even an actual base, likely just a rented room at one of the sub-locations. We could probably move the location about a lot.

TL;DR: The balancing of the Omniverse leads to inconsistencies from our character's perspectives. How might they explain, work around, exploit, and avoid them? Is Omni reading our minds? Who's down for a science club after DA? Or a drop in thread similar to the Coruscant torture quest but without the torture - so just testing moves and their relative strengths. Topics of interest:
  • How does summoning actually work?
  • Why do the costs vary?
  • Why can some things not be summoned in some places?
  • What is Omnilium?
  • How do move strengths vary?
  • What types of magic are there, how do they work?
  • How does the time dilation vary?

  Reworked NPC Rules Questions
Posted by: Amaterasu - 05-23-2017, 01:44 AM - Forum: Help Desk - Replies (1)

The new NPC rules have me a little confused, so I'm hoping to clear things up!

The relevant quotes are posted below for conveniance, from the NPCs rules page:

Quote:Using Pre-existing Characters as NPCs
When deciding whether or not to allow you to commander pre-existing characters as NPCs, we base our decisions on the following system, ranking characters roughly by popularity. You gain 2 points per character level.

A-Listers - A-listers cannot be claimed as NPCs without rarely-given staff permission. Cost 5 points. Famous or well-known characters, particularly protagonists or major recurring antagonists. Example: Spider-Man, Batman, but also non-protagonists who are as important to the story as the protagonist or just as likely to be taken, such as Vegeta or The Joker, or Venom. Very likely to be taken as player characters, hence their limitations.

B-Listers - Cost 2 points if part of your character's universe, 3 points otherwise. Part of a supporting cast, or protagonists of a non-A-list series. May be taken by common consent of staff, and permission will always be given if you have the points unless there is good reason otherwise. Example: Mary-Jane Watson, Chi Chi, Alundra, Sanada Yukimura, Paige (Charmed).

C-Listers - Cost 1 point. Part of a supporting cast to niche series, or non-recurring, minor characters from major series (such as those part of spin-offs or non-canonical side-material). Same rules apply to permissions as B-lister NPCs. Examples: Biggs, Wedge or Jessie from Final Fantasy VII. Garlic Jr from Dragon Ball Z.

Quote:Two personal NPC Primes is the limit to begin with - this increases by one every 2 levels, starting at level 3. So at level 3 you'll have 3 personal Prime NPCs, at level 5 you'll have 4, at level 7 you'll have 5, etc.

Quote:Without approval, you should not summon more than five secondaries per your Prime's level. Additionally, players who invest in a Base can create small villages or mansions that may have a staff of secondaries.

My questions are:

-Does the ABC-List-Ranking apply to NPC Primes AND Secondaries, or just to one? The term "NPCs" is used a little ambiguously in the rules, unfortunately. If it applies to both, are the points shared between the two groups? E.g. if you have 6 points, could you have one A-List NPC Prime and one C-List Secondary and be maxed out?

-Am I correct to assume that original characters cost 0 points on the ABC list, whether they're full OCs or OCs from a pre-existing canon?

-In order to have an NPC Prime or Secondary do you need to satisfy both the ABC list AND the "maximum number of NPC Primes/Secondaries for your current level" requirements?

-Taking the situation that an author, artist or the like who publishes their own book, series or the like joins the site (which has actually happened, it would seem!), where would we draw the line between "This is an original character" and "This is a pre-existing character with restrictions" if that person summons characters from their creation?

  [FKRK] This isn't Sovngarde...

"LOSYAH-POGAAN-KREINNE!"

Each syllable shook Nirn down to its very bones, the cracked plates of parched grey soil crumbled beneath the force of the Dovahzul. The angry crimson skies began to swirl with heavy dark clouds, obscuring the empty black hole where the sun once resided. The winds picked up, howling past the figure on the balcony.

"HI FEN BOA ZU'U NIKRIIN!"

Still that guttural voice bellowed, as if it held the sole rights to be heard by all. The thick armored fingers curled around the black stone railing, grinding into the rock. Furious orange-red eyes narrowed, searching for their target like a hawk picks out its prey a kilometer away.

The gaping archway to the balcony allowed natural light to filter into the room beyond. The imposing black throne cast a jagged shadow on the floor that nearly stretched the length of the light itself.

The sound of a door creaking open echoed down the long throne room. The armored figure twisted sharply to glare at the uninvited newcomer. The golden skin of the high elf was muted by sickly grey undertones. Deep shadows pooled in the sunken in eye sockets and under the high cheekbones of the mer.

She stepped forward, unaverted by the pressing gaze of her superior. The otherworldly blue fire light danced across the features of her shrewd face as she made her rapid approach to the balcony. Soon enough she's standing next to the imposing figure with little care or reserve in her mannerisms.

“There have been no sightings of him recently, my Lord.” The mer’s nasally voice sounded. The Leader twitched sharply as those words ringed in their ears, their red eyes bored a hole into the subordinate.

“Then find him!” The voice seemed to reverberate down into her very bones.

“We cannot.” The elf replied. The weight of the gaze upon her made her shift uncomfortably. “We cannot. Not with the supplies you have given me.” Her tone softened at the end, curling up as if she were showing her underbelly.

“Not with the supplies I gave you?” Questioned the leader. “Why not with the supplies I gave your underlings?”

“Well, Sir, may I-”

The Lord cut her off, “Unless you’ve been taking their supplies, selling them for your own profit.”

“No, Sir-”

“Selling them to the enemy, the Aldmeri Dominion. I bet you’re just trying to undermine me!”

“My Lord please!”

“Haha, no. You won’t. You’re just waiting to lay a trap for me, but I’m too smart.” the Lord grabbed the mer by the front of her formal tunic and jerked her forward and up, bringing her face to face with them. A loud snarl followed, “I won’t fall for it!”

For a split second the mer whose name had never been important enough to remember focused on her Lord’s unholy red eyes and the crimson hair that hung in long strands around their effeminate face. The uneven and broken spikes on the Lord’s gauntlets dug into her tunic and scratched against her skin. Her own hands tightly clung to the fist that held her a foot in the air. She tried desperately to relieve the pressure of the collar on the back of her neck.

As she stared into those eyes she finally understood not just madness, but insanity itself. Something coiled in her gut, sending a panicked frenzy of energy into her limbs. She clawed at the hand holding her. Her short nails scraped against the thick metal plating before clipping into the carved symbols that line the edges of each piece of armor. Her eyes focus on the dried black blood caked to the collar of the armor and smeared across the snarling lips of her overlord. Taking a breath in she starts to cast a stream of fire into her Lord’s uncovered face.

An inhuman scream sounded as she was thrown to the ground. The air whooshed out of her lungs as she collided with the stone floor and bounced. Her vision flashed red- white- red- white- black- red- as her head impacted the floor twice in rapid succession. She wheezed, only able to gape like a fish on land as she tried to get her lungs to expand again. Hot blood ran from her split scalp and matted her dull hair down. Her head rang as if she were standing inside a giant church bell. The tension and pain coalesced behind her forehead and eyes.

She tried to pull herself off the ground- the air finally returning to her- but her head fell forward and her body followed suit. The mer crumpled to the floor, the cold stone rushing up to slam against her left cheek. Her eyes rolled back as she laid there for a moment, struggling to control her body again through the pounding rush in her skull.

She managed to prop herself up on her left arm and peel her face off the floor. With her right hand  reached out she pooled golden magicka in her palm and let the glow swirl around her battered body. As if a second wind had come over her, she managed to stagger to her feet. Her eyes darted around the expansive and dark throne room.

Auriel blasted- where is she?!

The slight wind died down completely.

The ghostly fires flickered. The smallest movement caused the mer to twitch and jump. After a few tense seconds had passed she began to back up towards the entry door.

CLANG-SHHHTING!!

The she-elf gasped sharply-

KLUNK-CLANK-SSHHHHHTITI The heavy metal armor slammed against the ground.

Her eyes frantically leap from shadow to shadow trying to find the daedric whore. A soft whistle broke the air a split second before she found her left hand pinned to the wooden door behind her. Her right hand followed soon after, as did both calves. Blood pushed up from the pierced flesh as if her limbs were weeping with pain.

“If I had pinned you by the shoulders, you would probably end up killing yourself in the struggle-” A slightly raspy female voice echoed.

“What- I can’t- I can’t move! I- What are you doing??-” She looked over at her right arm and attempted to pull against the ghostly blue arrow shaft that pinned her down.

“ -But now you’ll get to suffer.”

“ -What are you going to do to me??!” The pinned mer strained against each daedric arrow. Her wounded flesh began to tear, allowing more blood to leak. Tears welled up in her large green eyes as she let out soft cries. Within seconds she found her struggle too tiring to continue. Her teeth started to clack together as she shivered; her limbs tried in vain to pull closer to her torso.

She blinked a few times in an attempt to stay conscious through the freezing pain. The shadows morphed in front of her and melted away into a large muscular figure. A pale and somewhat slender hand ran through long crimson hair. It closed in and became easy to distinguish the person not as a man, but as a massive woman with large shoulders and thick legs.

The overlord’s heavy boots clacked loudly against the masonry. Her face was twisted into a cocksure and amused smirk and free from any burns. Her red eyes sent pricks of pain down the mer’s spine.

She leaned down and whispered, “for the pleasure of my Dread Father I will bathe in your blood. I will not allow you to betray me. Not now. ... Let me enjoy this, Iriea~”

The woman flexed her hand, curling her fingers into a ball. Iriea let out whines of discomfort as her limbs contorted into unnatural positions. The cold helped only to numb the panicked signals her nerves sent.

“Oh? I don’t think that this is painful enough for you. Maybe I should twist you this way.” Her voice carried a giddy excitement as her other hand moved. The mer woman only threw her eyes open as a scream howled out from somewhere deep and primal inside her. The muscles of her calves were ripped apart- they hung loosely from the bone and left chunks of gore and blood to stain the floor. Her legs continued to pull up, disregarding the arrows that carved ragged paths through her.

The pops, cracks and grinding of her bones was a disgusting symphony to the Listener. Her pelvis was twisted sideways and crammed up into her ribcage. She felt her heart hitting against her left hip bone with each beat. Jagged bones rolled beneath the skin and muscle and poked through in some places, exposing the gory red and yellow insides of the skeleton.

“This one thought you were better than playing with your food.”

The crimson haired woman’s neck almost snapped with how fast she turned to look at the man. She curled her hands into tight fists and the mer woman exploded into a paste-like soup of eviscerated entrails and bone with little more than a sharp gasp and widened eyes as final words.

“Seeks. I thought you’d never come.”

“You called for this one all day long, landstrider. I was bound to appear eventually.”

They stood in deathly silence for several minutes. Each pair of eyes scraped over the opponent’s body, analyzing and searching out changes or possible weaknesses. She gave a whisper, “traitor.”

A bolt of vicious blue lightning crackled through the air and in instant response a thick wall of ice was pulled up from the ground to absorb it. With little more than a hand motion the woman sent the ice wall sliding towards the her scaly skinned target.

He stepped forward and tapped the wall with the claw of his index finger, cracking it in two. He walked through the gap and flung another bolt of lightning at the woman. This time it was deflected off her leather bracers. “TRAITOR SEEKS.” She screamed as she ran to him with a clenched fist.

But just as her fist was about to make contact with the lizard faced betrayer, he sank into the floor and vanished. Her vision flickered white and red as his elbow rammed into the back of her skull. She twisted around as she staggered, nearly falling on top of Seeks; she latched her fingers into his cloth robes and used her weight to drag him down to the floor with her.

Desperately she took a few swipes at his neck as she grasped his collar like a lifeline. “Traitor,” she growled once more as he pinned her arms down with his knees.

“I am not a traitor!”

“LIES. FO KRAH DIIN!” Her voice boomed out, frost blooming on his robes- yet his flesh remained unscathed in the slightest.

“You want to learn the truth Skadi?! This one will show you the truth!” He grasped the sides of her face.

Her vision went black.

She felt as if she was spun around before facing a featureless yet somehow grinning white figure that sat hunched in the void. In a way it’s juvenile body seemed to radiate both light and darkness into the void.

“I am Omni...” He went on to define some things to her and ended his speech with “I’ll be watching... and waiting.”

The black faded through grayscale and into white. Slowly her eyes adjusted and a white fountain came into focus. It’s frame was twisted and curled into elegant alien shapes. She stared at the sculpted architecture and her eyes narrowed into slits. “Where the everloving fuck am I?”
