  Beyond the Metaverse
Posted by: Hiro Protagonist - 05-01-2016, 02:40 PM - Forum: The Nexus - Replies (1)

The column of light begins to flow up and down and resolve itself into a human form. Actually, it is four human forms, female nudes standing shoulder to shoulder, facing outward, like caryatids. Each of them is carrying something long and slender in her hands: a pair of tubes. A third of a million hackers stare at the women, towering above the stage, as they raise their arms above their heads and unroll the four scrolls, turning each one of them into a flat television screen the size of a football field. From the seats in the amphitheater, the screens virtually blot out the sky; they are all that anyone can see.

The screens are blank at first, but finally the same image snaps into existence on all four of them at once. it is an image consisting of words; it says "IF THIS WERE A VIRUS, YOU WOULD BE DEAD NOW. FORTUNATELY, IT'S NOT. THE METAVERSE IS A DANGEROUS PLACE; HOW'S YOUR SECURITY? CALL HIRO PROTAGONIST SECURITY ASSOCIATES FOR A FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION."

That's it....no more Snow Crash. And if YT and Enzo did their jobs...no more Rife either.

Hiro's avatar floated in the white empty void inside the program core, devoid of any feature or sensation. He couldn't view anything outside of it, and when he reached up to remove his Metaverse goggles, his hands slid over a complete absence of tech.

Wait. Wait. Why can't I...get....out?

He pawed at his head, his avatar's arms moving but his own body not responding, most likely comatose in the dirty storage cell of his apartment. Fuck. So he had to wait for Vitaly to get home from one of his stupid noise gigs and unplug him manually. He'd probably demand a six pack in return for the heroic rescue too. All I have to do is just wait here and hope I didn't shit my pants.

But time passed, and although none of his information readouts were working, Hiro could tell it had been more than an hour. Then, just as he became aware of how much time had passed, the whiteness around him immediately polarized into an abundant blackness, like someone had pulled the plug on a TV.

"Hey, what the fuck!" Hiro said aloud, momentarily surprised that he could issue voice commands again. There wasn't any software written for the interior of the Metaverse to allow that, and he would know since he helped write the damn thing. "The hell is going on now? Didn't I just save the world? No breaks for the hero?"

Almost as if to answer his question, a white silhouette faded in from the darkness, a grinning daemon of some sort. Hiro raised his voice in objection to the new development, but the words stuck in his throat and he remained suspended in the black void.

Quote:“My name is Omni. This is not the world you know. This is the Omniverse. You interest me, so I have made you part of it. The Omniverse is a place that reflects the wishes of those who are part of it. But! There are rules. I will explain them only once, so listen carefully.”

Omniverse? Oh, hell no. What kind of third-party Tadjikistani ripoff of the Metaverse kinda name was that? And not the world you know. Hiro was about fifty fifty on that, considering he'd already encountered several things beforehand that he would have never dreamed about before. And some kind of mental reflection shaped the world? It was a good thing he'd already gotten his "bullshit tolerance" meter soaked and increased in capacity with the neurolinguistic hacking mumbo jumbo and the mind controlled fanatics.

The grinning apparition handed him something shiny and pliable, explaining it's use.

Quote:“This is Omnilium. It’s what ties the Omniverse together. Without it, you are nothing. With it, anything you desire can be yours. But you will need more than this. If you desire it enough, you will find it. You will find that using it comes naturally. Just think of what you desire most.

“You will not be alone in the Omniverse. There are others. Of course, they, too desire Omnilium. Do not fear death. For as long as you interest me, you will be reborn.

“That’s all you need to know right now. You’ll figure out the rest soon enough. I’ll be watching … and waiting.”

Omni faded away and Hiro found himself in the blackness again, holding the orb. Well....that was certainly a lot to take in. Maybe he was lying in his apartment in a coma, and this was his dying dream. Maybe he'd gotten his brain patterns wiped and lost in the Metaverse. Whatever it was, he'd find a way out eventually. Or never. But if he could have whatever he wanted, hell, it'd be a better living than the one he'd had so far. Being a freelance hacking swordfighter was great in the Metaverse, but in real life it barely paid the bills. Might as well make the best of this "Omniverse". Ugh. Just saying the name felt untrue.

As he was ruminating, Hiro realized that the blackness in front of him was no longer the utter darkness of Omni's void, but merely the kind that came from closed eyes. He sat up, opening them, and then immediately shutting them again as he was assailed by searing whiteness, just like in the core he had been floating in.

"God damnit! Where the hell are my..." The hacker patted his coat pockets, not feeling the familiar weight of his goggles resting on his head. Empty. No sword, no goggles, no arachnoweave gloves, nothing. But then again...there. That orb that Omni had given him. Anything you desire can be yours, huh?

Several minutes later, after cupping his palms like an idiot and thinking about the picture he'd seen on the billboard, Hiro had a brand new shiny pair of tinted lenses. The absolute top of the line in analytical, tactical, and commercial hardware, just one pair of EnSyte lenses had cost more than a brand new Kirosawa motorcycle. And now Hiro had a pair, for free! Slipping them onto his face, he thumbed the power button and breathed a comfortable sigh of relief as the blinding whiteness of his new location was filtered and dimmer.

"Excellent...now....hm. 'Dataverse Access?' Let's see.....Ohhhh. Fuckin' ripoffs, man!" The Omniverse had it's own internet. Clicking the buttons on his glasses, Hiro scrolled through a page or two before groaning in frustration and putting his hands together in front of him again. A few minutes later, there was a very nice pair of black, arachnoweave gloves on the ground in front of him, complete with sensegel grips and haptic feedback interface. "Much better."

Slipping them on and fiddling with a few more buttons on the glasses, Hiro enabled the 3D Overlay feature and was soon making dumb gestures in midair to navigate through the Dataverse, like any proper hacker should. He spent more than an hour reading about the different verses and their inhabitants, dangers, and possible rewards, and watching old news broadcasts about recent events. The one about the burning skeleton man made his stomach turn, viewing the scenes of carnage and violence dappled across where he was sitting now. He didn't see the fountain depicted in the video, but where it was standing in the film; in real life there was a stack of obsidian cubes stacked on each other in a triangular pyramid. He'd been leaning against them while he browsed. The code that the Dataverse used was strange, and different than any kind of code he'd seen before; but there were enough commonalities that he was sure he could get the basics down in no time.

That video about the "Harbinger" had put a bit of animal awareness into him. So, this was a paradise where everything you wanted could be yours, sure.....but just like always, there was the big stompy jackasses who could fuck you day up if they felt like it. Without his katana, he was defenseless against any sort of giant stompy jackass. So, glasses glinting in the non-light of the featureless white void, he thought long and hard about his swordfighting experience, his mastery, and his potential. Why limit yourself if you can make anything? Hiro Protagonist grinned, and spoke aloud to himself. "Somebody call me Vulcan, because I am going to forge the shit out of this thing."

Another hour passed, and feeling drained, Hiro held his creation aloft. It was a thing of beauty, a long gray scabbard made of fiberweave titanium for sturdiness and flexibility. Near the top was a series of ripples and nubs; these held the mechanics of the interior microforge, which generated extra base material and superheated it for quick,  easy repairs and resmoothing. Two lights, one red and one green were on the very tip of it, just below where the hilt of his actual sword was locked it. The red light died as the green one came on, and Hiro drew the katana in a quick, wide slashing arc. The newly forged blade trailed yellow-white sparks in the air, trace amounts of the  magma that, when cooled, provided a monomolecular cutting edge. Nearly three and a half feet in length, the katana was made of transparent aluminum and volcanic glass.

Holding the new sword in front of him, Hiro began a series of slow, dutiful swings and pivots. This kata was one of his most basic, which he used whenever he'd gotten hold of a new sword. Although the loss of his father's battlefield souvenir was an emotional wound, Hiro was confident this new blade would serve him just as well against the danger's of the Omniverse. Using his scabbard in conjunction with the sword slashes and sheathings, the hacker ronin felt confident. He was already adapting to this new environment and expanding his sword style as well. Resheathing the glass blade and affixing the scabbard to the quick-release clip on his belt, he began walking in a specific direction, coat trailing in the air behind him. To Coruscant. To a technological city. To where he thrived.

  Dante's Abyss Pre'Scussion, Q/A
Posted by: Karl Jak - 05-01-2016, 02:02 PM - Forum: Omniverse Discussion - Replies (38)

So I just wanted to once again thank everyone for their input.

As you know, this summer's event will be 'Option D', which is the PvP-optional version of the event.

Quote:'In this event, contestants crash on an island.  It is up to the survivors to figure a way off the island.  They may work together or alone.  The host will serve much like a GM in a tabletop RPG by providing prompts and events that progress the story or give clues to the primes.  Every X number of OOC days will constitute ‘a round.’  At the end of each round, the host will give one individual a prize and then eliminate one individual from the pool of contestants (this may result in death or simply mean that person is ineligible to ‘win’ at the end).'
I just wanted to see if anyone had any inquiries in the lead-up to me actually putting together the formal rules/formats for the event.

Here are some things to throw out there.

->Event is scheduled to begin sometime in mid/late June.  Registration/preshow/whatever you want to call it will begin at least a week and a half before that date.  Overall duration is unknown at this moment, but I'd expect it to be longer than last year.  This event will have a slower pace than last year.
->Your character will be personally invited to participate in a Syntech-sponsored 'exploratory' mission into the Danteverse.  While this event will be called 'Dante's Abyss' by me for the sake of simplicity and whatnot, in-character it will not be referred to that.
->You must sign a waiver before boarding the plane.
->There will be very minor handicaps to primes in regards to Powers and 'flavor-of-life' things that most primes are used to
->While the focus of this is PvE/story, Damage and SP still play a role and should be resources that people make sure they manage
->There won't be 'Items' akin to DA15 or HG, but there will be support items awarded throughout the event.  These might be restorative (health/SP), flavor items, or they might be clues to the story
->Collaborating with other primes is optional.  Being in a group won't insulate you from elimination but may help with other dangers.  PvP is likewise optional and very much a risk-reward thing.  Just do what your character would do in the situation.  #BeYourself
->Karl Jak will be on the plane with the group of participants.
->Writers may be able to join as not-their-prime

Anyway, there's a little more to it than that, but hopefully that'll whet appetite while I type up something prettier.

Anyone have any questions?  Input?

  Vote for Us! (May)

You like having more people to play with, right? That was a rhetorical question, because having more people to write with is awesome. Do you also like OM? If the answer is 'yes', which OBVIOUSLY it is, then please vote for us on the following sites!

RPGfix (every 12 hours. If you register, your votes count as x2. Worth the couple of minutes to make an account if you're going to be voting every day)
Top RP Sites (Daily)

When you vote, please post here with your total vote count for this month. So "Voted: 1", "Voted: 3" or whatever. Just keep track of 'em. For our counting purposes, clicking vote on both sites, or on RPGfix if only that is available, counts as 1 vote. If you post less than twelve hours since your last post, we won't count it. This means you can get up to two vote counts a day if you vote exactly every twelve hours. Simple? SIMPLE.

At the end of the month, if you posted ...

7-13 times: You get 100 OM.
14-23 times: You get 200 OM.
24+ times: You get 300 OM.
Every day: You get 300 OM, and a hug from me for being so damn diligent.

If you have an alternate character and wish to claim your reward on that account as opposed to your main one, please let us know in the topic before the month ends. If you don't, we'll assume you want the OM on the account you posted with.

We're going to trust in this that people actually click the links and don't just reply. I mean it only takes a few seconds to click these links anyway, but if there's a discrepancy between the posts here and the number of votes, and people really want to try and scam their way to a few hundred extra OM without voting, then we'll just remove this. Capiche?

Thanks for voting everyone! If you have time, please also leave a vote and review for us on Top RPG sites (once only).

??: My, my. This is a surprise most unexpected, even for one such as I.
??: Another Player, and from a session not only entirely different, but so far-removed as to be from a world outside of this enclosed space?
??: Fascinating.
TG: my god what the hell even is your username
TG: please dont tell me
TG: you are that one eyeless white douche
??: Ah, yes, that. I do apologize. Attempting to transliterate my true identification resulted in the...garbled mess you see.
??: Ohohohoho. "Eyeless white douche". How colorful.
??: No.
TG: wait are you his mom
TG: was that whole toy soldiers thing legit
TG: because if it was im a fucking genius and also fucked at the same time
??: I can safely assure you I am no one's mother.
??: And as for that "toy soldiers thing", as you put it? True enough, after its own fashion.
??: But not quite, at the same time.
TG: alright so im half right
TG: what even are you then
??: What even am I? A most curious question. I believe you are familiar with what I am, if not necessarily with what this particular incarnation is intended for.
??: A new 'verse' was created within this place that the....ahem, "eyeless white douche" created. A new world. A new series of worlds.
??: And they needed a guardian.
??: I believe you can, as they say, "do the math".
TG: of fuck are you jades dog
TG: no wait fuck
TG: of course you arent dogs cant type
TG: or even speak english
TG: not even bec
TG: unless you had some weird collar shit
TG: im willing to bet something like that exists somewhere here
TG: maybe even some convoluted fresh out the easy bake oven dogs have humans as pets thing
TG: if you want a steak i can tell you i dont have any
TG: and if you are a first guardian then who the fuck is playing
??: Who is playing, indeed?
??: A large number of participants.
??: I believe it will not be too difficult for you to gain awareness of this game's full nature, and even observe it, if you truly wish to.
TG: i swear if a bunch of dumbasses like us are now running around trying to figure out how to enter the medium
TG: we are so fucked
TG: might as well nuke us all in a mound of puppet ass
TG: because we are NOT crawling out of this one
??: Ohohohohooho. Yes, you would all be quite doomed.
TG: but if we arent as screwed as we think
??: Luckily, only the specific homes and the side verse created for this game's purpose are in any danger.
TG: so this time the game brought powertools
TG: so the screws going into us are actually pretty cool instead up fucking everything up
TG: what did you say about observing
TG: like karkat and the other trolls were doing
??: One moment.
??: ........yes. Quite like that.
??: I had to ascertain the meaning of that name, but it is indeed what you would be capable of.
TG: holy fuck have the tables turned
TG: rotating these babies like its a fucking party up in here
TG: except we arent gonna be fucking up the timelines like terezi was at first
??: Ah, sarcasm. And irony, perhaps?
TG: yeah im gonna show them some sarcasm and irony alright
TG: flash them with the real info about the game like pop up porn ads
??: Precious.
TG: alright so is this all going to be on the dataverse or something
TG: who the hell are the people we are supposed to contact
??: Well, the dataverse is the primary method for which to make use of your ability to observe.
??: Unless you wish to go there in person.
??: And as for who these individuals might be? No one you are familiar with.
TG: well i am going to start digging this hole to china
TG: or wherever the hell these dumbasses that may or may have not downloaded the game already are
??: Ohohohohohoho.
??: Very well. I do look forward to seeing your reaction to their, as you say, "shenanigans".
??: Farewell, mister Strider.
TG: just let me know when i finally hit china

  overlapping quests
Posted by: The Humble Sage - 04-30-2016, 04:56 PM - Forum: Help Desk - Replies (2)

What are the rules for overlapping quests.  Noodle and I will be in that area of Cinnibar Island for the Star piece quest at around the same time as Sabrina will be completing her Cinnibar Island faction quest. Is it all right for us to collaborate during that section, even though we really aren't completing each other's quests. We'd have our own word totals towards our own quests I was assuming, but I wanted to make sure there isn't some other issue with the idea.

From a story perspective, the current plan is that while Sabrina is meeting with the Empire on Cinnibar's behalf (or whatever is going on when the Empire shows up,) The astronomer would have myself and Noodle doing something either to help him stay hidden, or to otherwise sabotage this imperial convoy.

Regarding fictional versions of real-life famous figures
Posted by: Chloe Price - 04-29-2016, 04:39 PM - Forum: Help Desk - Replies (7)

I'm not sure how to phrase this as a simple question, so I'm gonna use examples;

Say, I wanted to play as a Youtuber, for this example I'mma use, Markiplier. That's an obvious "no,"

But, say, if I wanted to play as a version of Markiplier, from one of his fangames, for instance, Dream.Exe. There is nothing written for or against this, at least that I read.

Would that be okay?

((As a note, yes, that is legitimately an idea of mine for my new character.))

  Cyborg the cop
Posted by: Damien Darhk - 04-29-2016, 04:00 PM - Forum: Omniverse Discussion - Replies (4)

I would like Cyborg to join the EPD(empire police dept), other than doing the initial quest to gain favor from the empire I'm not sure how to then IC do this to fit cannon. I imagine him being kinda like Dredd in a way for lesser crimes that primes commit and then help the empire bring those to justice.

First off, a question for a mod. Can I do this? Techibically I would be invading others stories when they do something criminal in the Courscant verse. So am I allowed to do this if said primes are verrrrrrry obvious about their criminal activity

Secondly, this is a general question.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can join the EPD, I doubt that completing the quest would allow me to automatically become an officer so what are some steps I can take to further this?

Any insight to thus goal would be great. Thanks!
