I couldn't see very far into the treeline. But I think we might have strayed near to one travelling group as we trekked alongside it, slowly drifting closer. It was hard to tell. Despite that, I was fairly confident we weren't too close to anyone. Too close being right on top of them.
"Cirno, we're going in now."
She flinched, having not heard me speak for a short while. "It's about time."
The tropical forest was dense and humid. I hadn't seen anything like it before, but I suspected that (assuming this island wasn't entirely unpopulated) there could easily be a plethora of species living there. The plants, at least, seemed to be particularly diverse, so I expected the animal population would be as well. Even if there were people there waiting for me, I should be able to pass them.
Key emphasis on should.
My intuition was screaming at me not to press on. The forest was dark. It was becoming night, but the treetops blocked even the light from the moon. I didn't like it, but Cirno seemed to have no problem. Then again, she also had no problem in attacking a duo of experienced individuals unprovoked. Granted she couldn't have known their skill level, but it was a fight she'd have lost without my intervention.
We were close to the trees. Perhaps ten metres away.
"Cirno, we're going back."
"What? Why?"
"Think about it. This area of forest is near the B zone safehouse. If I was going to camp waiting for someone who was dumb enough to get the A drop, I'd do it here."
"Then we'll beat them up!"
"No. We won't. We'll play it safe. We've got three hours Cirno. We can use them."
A plan was beginning to form in the back of my mind as we moved away from the treeline. It might not work. It might be pointless. But, I figured it was worth a shot.
