Dell is an absolutely brilliant Prime with endless talents and areas of expertise. Despite this, he's a pretty simple guy. He just likes to build and create things, and prefers to punctuate his life with a few beers on occasion. They say that simplicity is happiness, but that's bullshit. This is not way to live.

What Dell needs to learn that there has to be more to life than just perfecting your craft. Sure, such a pursuit is honorable and respectable, but at the end of the day, the only thing you've really managed to improve is yourself. This is especially true of Dell, since his particular expertise is in weapons systems. The engineer, bless his agnostic heart, could do with cultivating a little spiritualism; after all there can be no progress without vision and imagination.

Dell's digimon line is designed to ease him into accepting this slowly, over time. His digimon partner starts out familiar and mechanical enough, but as it evolves further, we eventually get to a literal manifestation of deific, holy power. Dell can either reject this and lose a friend, or he can admit, yeah, maybe I should apply myself to something bigger. Being able to build things is not as enriching as having a reason to build them.

I'd like to into great detail with Carn, but there's really just no need.

He's a goofy eldritch clown and he needs a playmate. These digimon fit that bill, and generally have the sort of durability to handle his destructive horseshit. In fact, in some ways, his digimon might be even more impulsively destructive than Carn himself. There is nothing less fun than a prank that's gone too far. The Anomaly may be a madman, but he isn't entirely without sensibility, so I think having a partner that he needs to keep under control might instill some much needed sense of responsibility in the little weirdo.

...though Craniummon is definitely a hardcore badass who doesn't mess around. I'm sure on the rare occasion that Carn might feel the need to call upon that kind of power, he'll be suitably goosed into admitting that maybe there IS a time to take things seriously.

Let's take a real look at Ghidorah for a moment. He's a fifty meter tall, three headed golden space dragon with lightning breath. Basically anything that moves is already shit beneath his feet to be stepped on, so why would he be paired with anything other than a digimon that is already disgusting and reprehensible in any way? Numemon certainly won't mind or resent the constant belittling that Ghidorah heaps on it for being gross and small; Numemon already knows this and expects this kind of treatment.

Ghidorah also has a bit of a high opinion of himself, so it was important to pair him with someone who can shamefully heap tons and tons of flattery and praise on the space dragon. Maybe too much. Maybe an annoying amount. Maybe to the point where even Ghidorah has to admit that enough of anything, even worship, can be unhealthy. Through this, it's possible that the dragon god could eventually get to a point where he can let others shine in his presence without feeling threatened.

In Numemon's case this is a literal thing as it also becomes a winged, golden monster at its highest digivolution. These evolutions may not have the same kind of offensive punch as, say, War Greymon, but they're effectively indestructible. Ghidorah wouldn't get along with a partner who was better at knocking stuff over than him, anyway.

Yesterday when I was talking about Dave's partner in chat, I was told I should pair him with Shoutmon. I turned this down because initially it seemed too on-the-nose for a kid who likes music so much, but then I realized something. That is exactly the kind of thing that Dave needs to work on. Lemme explain.

This gets a little meta, so bear with me.

Dave Strider is a guy who likes to mix it up. He considers himself to be off-the-cuff, aloof and unique. This is, in part, due to an ingrained need to self-identify from living with his overbearing older brother. Dirk forced Dave to develop such a strong identity that Dave feels compelled to maintain his attitude pretty much at every moment, no matter the circumstances. The thing is that, Dave himself gets tired of wearing this identity all the time, and in his original series he can be seen exhibiting a desire to drop the facade every once and a while. But, people expect him to act a certain way, so he continues to be a cool kid, a sort of inverse accommodation behavior instilled by trying to survive Dirk Strider.

So, when he gets a digimon line that starts super chill, then turns into a clock, that turns into a knight, I can imagine that Dave might face a small but profound moment of despair where it seems that even the universe expects him to act exactly in the persona he has manufactured over the years. Of course he would end up with time and knight motifs. Why not? That's just who he fucking is. Why should he be surprised to get what's expected?

Well, that's the thing. This isn't specifically due to the universe pegging Dave for what he makes himself out to be; this is Dave just assuming that this is what happened. He's automatically assuming that he's once again being forced to assume a role that he's tired of playing, when really, the digimon itself is just a creature that happens to be a clock and a knight. Clockmon and Knightmon can help Dave to realize this by reinforcing the idea that, even though their forms might be sort of...to the point, they're still plenty unique in and of themselves as an individual. Once Dave can get over his hangups about perceiving other people's labels as the word of god, then we move on to Sleipmon, who is a giant mechanized horse monster with a crossbow, which has NOTHING to do with Dave Strider's usual personas and gimmicks, but by this point, he'll realize that that doesn't matter.

It's who he is and what he wants that's important: not what other people expect him to be.

Compared to Dave, Demetri is pretty simple.

Demetri is a man who despises power, at least in its traditional form of hierarchy and royalty. His home world was riddle with corruption and government overreach, so Demetri took it upon himself to steal the one thing from the system that is truly valued: information. He used the information he stole to fight against them before getting taken to the Omniverse, and those compulsions of needing to know and craving all available knowledge have carried over with him.

What I feel Demetri doesn't really fully understand that it's not royalty that is in and of itself a corrupting influence, its wealth and power. Knowledge can be as much of a corrupting influence as any other item, as those who have it can easily wield it against the ignorant. Demetri's digimon partner starts out innocent and a little dim, but as her evolutions progress she becomes steadily more and more filled with knowledge, but also, darkness.

Now that's not so say that Patamon will immediately turn homicidal when she finally reaches the level of Wisemon or Piemon, but the tendencies are there, and Demetri is perceptive enough to see these. Realizing that a compulsive need for knowledge and information can be just as corrupting as anything else will hopefully help the prince thief come to terms with the fact that sometimes he DOESN'T need to know. In turn, he can help Patamon cope with her darker adult forms and help guide her on the path of (relative) restraint and integrity.

Somerled/Sonny:

As tempting as it was to play on weather dynamics with Somerled's partner, I opted instead to play on the duality of his split personalities. Now I'm not specifically saying that bugs are evil but they tend to attract negative connotations. Digimon, being the weirdos that they are, don't necessarily need to maintain similar forms between evolution, so Kunemon turns into a dragon. Then that dragon turns into a mix between a dragon and a bug. This symbolizes the height of Somerled's confusion between his two halves.

Once he's able to reconcile that, then the hybrid turns back into a bug, but it's a shiny bug that is valorous and awesome. Somerled and Sonny don't need to be at odds with one another; everyone with a mind struggles between being selfish and being outgoing. The only difference with Somerled and Sonny is that the dual nature of his psyche has a distinctive division between personalities. This doesn't need to be a war that ends up with only one winner.

Cole:

The thought process for Cole is kind of simple. He spent a majority of his life as a homeless guy, so I partnered him with some mollusk digimon that literally carry their homes on their backs.

Shakomon and Shellmon literally can't comprehend the stress of being homeless, and I think exposure to this might help Cole cope with the scarring from his experiences. Plus, having a defense oriented digimon compliments Cole's recklessness.

At higher evolutions, Anomalocarimon and Seadramon literally fuse with their shells, and Giga Seadramon even goes a step further by being able to carry people around and shelter them. Much in the same way Cole learned to turn his homelessness into an opportunity, Cole can also learn to help other people with their feelings of being displaced.

Ezrihel is a pretty nuanced Prime in that his strengths are also his weaknesses. His rationality and ruthless observational skills make him a natural go-getter and thing-doer who is usually capable of getting what he wants. Unfortunately, this approach to life tends to leave other people in the dust, where Ezrihel not only considers them lesser, but outright decries them for it. In short, he's pretty overbearing and not...heartless...but uncompromising.

Far be it from me to say that everyone just always needs to be super nice and totally sensitive to everyone else all the time; that sort of coddling doesn't encourage growth. But! Ezrihel could still probably learn a thing or two about nurturing, if for no other reason than to make his cohorts as effective as possible.

Enter Impmon; despite being an edgy little rascal, Impmon is highly emotional and sensitive. On top of that, he's a destructive little scamp who likes to throw tantrums. It's the exact sort of person Ezrihel HATES. At the same time, Ezrihel is smart enough to figure that there's probably some sort of hidden attention to his petulant little partner, and he learns to work with Impmon, eventually the rookie would evolve to the uber powerful Angemon.

...and after enjoying that for a while, Angemon would turn into a girl.

What.

Yes, no matter where Ezrihel turns, he can't seem to get away from unexpected gender bending. Maybe its time he just learned to stop resenting the reality of his situation and makes friends with his feminine side.

Jak is a pointy-eared fighter with a big heart. He's a shameless hero and has no qualms about resolving situations with virus; a real Prime's Prime, if you will. He has this whole dynamic about his dark eco and light eco forms, so to riff on that I chose a digimon line that fluctuates back and forth between light and dark, but the real reason I chose Chessmon specificaly is because Jak really needs to learn how to plan his life out and adapt to the world around him.

Chessmon loves to fight just as much as Jak does, but she does it in a way that involves meticulous planning and strategy. I think Jak could learn from this, and exposure to a digimon as intelligent as she would also help Jak learn to stop expecting things in the Omniverse to work the way they did in his homeworld.

For Zenith, really the priority was to give him a partner who would be naturally protective to keep the symbiont safe, while also being intelligent and world-savvy enough to allow Zenith to glean critical information from any fusion that may occur.

While Gazimon and his digivolutions may all be serious heavy-weight brawlers, they are all also scholars and lore-keepers at heart. There's really not a whole lot to Zenith's persona at this point, aside from a need to grow overall, so this just seems like the best fit.
