I'm also new to painting, but this looks good for a first try!
I'd maybe thin your paints a bit more, and doing a primer coat of black on the marine could have produced more of a noticeable value difference between over and underarmor.
Overall though your detailing looks pretty good, and I think maybe when you get your hands on a few more colors you'll totally be able to make some of the detailing pop.

On a related note...just tried to use acrylic gouache on a Dark Heaven mini instead of normal model paint.
...not happening. Looks like you get my money again, Citadel!! :orks:

It's a special kind of paint. Very good for canvas. Evidently terrible for resin casts.
I thought it would be okay since it has a similar consistency as enamel model paint, but unfortunately it tends to tear and bunch too much to do my usual wet blending techniques.

ahh. I used Acrylic for mine. Heard some advice to steer a bit from enamel, so i just stuck with acrylics.

Already some marked improvement here!
Great job!
The red wash is especially nice, maybe just a biiiit heavy on the face plate.
Also consider picking up a lighter grey metallic; can help with the highlighting in a lot of ways, but especially weapons.
And, we dream of home I dream of life out of here Their dreams are small My dreams don't know fear I got my heart full of hope I will change everything No matter what I'm told How impossible it seems We did it before And we'll do it again We're indestructible Even when we're tired And we've been here before Just you and I

Im curious on what you peeps would think. Theis is not a codex astartes compliant chapter by any means but I do have sort of a ranking structure in place.
Olive green- Your normal battle brothers and the like
Olive green with golden helmets - Sergeants
Field Grey - lieutenants
Gunmetal/Steel: Captains
Gold/bronze/etc: Chapter Masters/Former Chapter Masters
Black: Techmarines/ chaplains/etc.
Im having trouble figuring out what to color my Ancient, the one tasked with the honor of carrying the chapter banner. I'm tempted to give him the honor of having grey or steel armor but not quite sure on the matter. Any thoughts?

I looks great! You color scheme translated very well from your infantry to your armor.
I'd consider doing a quick black wash in some of the seams on the hull to bring out the detail in sharper relief.
Otherwise I have no critiques! Very competent.

I do have a question for those of you in the 40k hobby. I'm starting another army in a different chapter but have a few parts left over from a devastator, a tactical, and dreadnought box and thought I may have enough parts and pieces to put together a Captain until i can get my hands on something juicier.
That being said, what different bits would I need to qualify this guy as a Captain? I lack a cape but I figured a captain could go without one. I have a few bits that could pass as an Iron Halo. Any ideas?
