#31
Odin jerked awake. He had never intended to fall asleep but was exhausted. The grueling battle plus trying to move with his injury took everything out of him. He massaged his good leg, trying to loosen the knots it developed from doing all the work of carrying him.

I might as well give up. If I can’t compete when healthy, how am I going to do it in this state? He unconsciously reached up to the collar around his throat and touched it gingerly. It’s the smart thing to do. I’ve wasted an entire existence on a lost cause and got nothing but heartache for it. Two fingers slipped between his neck and the collar, and he sat there for a good long while.

Time ticked on and the sun set below the horizon.

“Damnit,” he grumbled as he pulled his hand away from his neck. He just couldn’t do it. He had no reason not to. No hope of pulling of a win. It just wasn’t something he was capable of doing.

He pulled a rune-carved bowl from his belt and set it on the floor of the barn. He chanted for a moment and mist swirled in it until he could see the dataverse. He checked omni-twitter and some bloggers to catch up on what he had missed now that he didn’t have his tablet. Apparently, he was at the site of an item drop coming soon.

“Perfect,” he grumbled. A wave of his hand disconnected the bowl, and he returned it to its place. With a groan, he struggled to his feet and checked out the window. Everything looked clear, for now at least.

Odin made his way toward the beach with the hope that any opposition would be coming from further inland. Of course, he avoided the sand itself. It would be hell on the leg.
