I've had the fortune to grow up with the best parents one could wish for, and it's times like these that make me feel grateful for them.
The thing is, you didn't decide to be put into this world and to have the parents that you have - your parents did. You never had a say in their decision. You don't owe your mother eternal gratitude for carrying you for nine months, or your father for siring you. Of course you should be thankful for them providing for you and sacrificing their time and energy, but you don't owe them. The years that they spent raising you is a gift, not a loan.
The good parents will (hopefully) have grateful kids who help them when they grow old and come to visit them. It may be sad but it's the truth.
