The thought process for Cole is kind of simple. He spent a majority of his life as a homeless guy, so I partnered him with some mollusk digimon that literally carry their homes on their backs.
Shakomon and Shellmon literally can't comprehend the stress of being homeless, and I think exposure to this might help Cole cope with the scarring from his experiences. Plus, having a defense oriented digimon compliments Cole's recklessness.
At higher evolutions, Anomalocarimon and Seadramon literally fuse with their shells, and Giga Seadramon even goes a step further by being able to carry people around and shelter them. Much in the same way Cole learned to turn his homelessness into an opportunity, Cole can also learn to help other people with their feelings of being displaced.
