Well... venting time for me too.
My families on both of my parents' sides have complicated issues, and in both there's one uncle of mine who's married to a woman that seems to have changed him. I don't want to bash at them, there may be other reasons, but... well, today I'll talk about my mum's brother.
He's been living in an apartment owned by my grandparents for several years now, which he doesn't pay rent for. (My grandparents have this big apartment house with 6 apartments, one of which my gran lives in, one is occupied by my uncle and one is the one I am now speaking about) He started out paying half rent, until his wife lost her job to unfortunate circumstances, at which point they stopped paying entirely. This has now been this way for about a year and a half. It's not like they need that apartment - they use it 2 days per month.
The problem is, my grandma is in a daycare(?) for elderly people because of her dementia, which costs a LOT of money per month, so she needs the income from that apartment. My uncle on the other hand just says "having this apartment is a priority for us (his family), we need it", what priority he speaks of I do not know, and refuses to move out even though he can't pay for it. And if we were to take drastic measures? "If you force us out, don't count on me helping you with [my grandma] anymore." This is a son talking about the care for his 80-something-year-old mother, ladies and gentlemen. If I were to ever say this regarding my parents, my siblings have my permission to put a bullet through my head on the spot.
My grandma, being from a generation where men are always more correct than women, believes that he is right and that her daughters (my mum and aunts) should just send him some money so he can afford the rent.
So why am I writing this now? Because my uncle held a party for Easter (in that apartment, no less) and didn't invite us - that is, my mum and her family - nor my aunt over, who are the ones most encouraging him to do something about the apartment - either move out and let someone else move in, or change his spending habits so he can at least pay part of the rent. He instead held the party with part of our family and tried to get our grandma to join it as well (she instead chose to stay with us, we held a separate party two levels lower). For a completely unrelated situation did he refuse to invite us. I'm baffled at the pettiness... especially because my mum and aunt both agree with me that he has never been like this and they don't recognize him.
