Weiss failed to suppress her own giggle, slightly surprised even as she pulled Ruby’s cloak over her head. When had she last laughed like this? Certainly not in the mansion, at least since Winter had moved out of her ancestral home. After the things she’d been through, there was nothing she expected to hear less from herself than a giggle.
What else was she supposed to do when she found herself having so much fun, though?
“Weiss, isn’t this water warm?” she heard Ruby say again.. “I get it Ruby, it’s-” Weiss started, half-way to telling her off for reiterating the same point for a third time in what felt like five seconds, only to realize-
Weiss didn’t feel all that warm. The water seemed a little cold, actually.
“-hmm, you find it warm?” Weiss asked with some interest. Ruby was pretty at home in winter, but she always seemed to need more heat than Weiss did. All of Ruby’s arctic living didn’t normally make up for the Schnee’s natural resilience, granted by their icy semblance. If anything, it should feel warmer to Weiss, not colder. “Yeah! Don’t you?” Ruby asked quizzically.
“Uhm… no.” Weiss said, raising her eyebrows. “Maybe this is weird water or something.” she said with a raised eyebrow.
“Oooor, maybe it’s your semblance coming back!” Ruby said with a grin.
Weiss’s face remained carefully neutral as she turned to answer. “Somehow I’m not sure. There’s plenty of other things I could blame this on other than that, and I’m not one to jump to conclusions…” Weiss lectured, before allowing a little smile to creep on her face. “But… Maybe.”
Ruby’s grin was contagious, as she put a hand in the air. “That’s gotta be it! I knew you’d get it back quick! Three cheers for you getting your semblance back! Hip hip Hoor--...Ehh?” She stammered. Weiss had grabbed one of her arms, even as she lifted herself up to cheer.
Weiss had one arm clasped around Ruby’s shoulder, even as she entwined her other hand around Ruby’s ear.
“Hey, Ruby?” Weiss breathed quietly, her heart pounding as her face got closer.
“Um-umm-ummm I-uh…” Ruby stammered and babbled, her face going red as her eyes ran in every direction to try and avoid Weiss’s gaze.
“...You know…” She said. “I appreciate you cheering me up.” She said with a smirk, as Ruby’s cheeks went so scarlet they blended in with her hood.
“This dress was one of my favorites though.” Weiss said with a teasing tone before gently pushing Ruby over into the water. Weiss thought she’d struggle but to her surprise, her young partner tipped over like a statue as she created a little sploosh when she hit the water. Weiss would have been worried she’d rendered the girl catatonic if she didn’t immediately see a pouty girl rise up from the water.
It took every ounce of Weiss’s willpower to only let out a little snort as she saw Ruby’s chubby-cheeked glare, arms crossed. “Weissss! That’s so mean!” She complained.
“You did something quite similar in the Colosseum if I recall correctly.” Weiss pointed out with a smirk. “Am I not allowed to tease?”
“No!” Ruby exclaimed, and Weiss couldn’t help but feel a little bad with the pain in Ruby’s voice. She’d feel worse if she didn’t know this was just how the brat enjoyed guilting her on the rare occasions that Weiss got her back for one of her little pranks.
“Sigh… you’ll call us even if I buy you ice cream, right?” Weiss asked with a smile. That didn’t mean she couldn’t play along every once in a while, right?”
“Oooh-They-totally-probably-have-ice-cream-I-Just-Realized-because-it’s-a-beach-here!” Ruby exclaimed with a sudden grin, and this time Weiss did laugh just a little at her team-mates sudden jubilation. “Weiss, can you buy me some strawberry ice cream?” the girl whined, and Weiss shook her head at the spaz in mock condemnation (and to avoid looking at her long enough to start giggling uncontrollably at the ridiculous expression on her face)
“I just said I would, you dolt.”
“Or Rocky road!”
“Sure!”
“Oh, or chocolate fudge!”
“If you want.”
“Or maybe do you think they have cookie dough-”
“-You know I’m making you stick to two scoops at a time, right? I’m not letting you get a tower of ice cream to splatter all over my dress.”
“-Whaaaaaaat?”
“You heard me.”
Weiss smiled, even as she get both feet onto dry land. She guessed Ruby was wrong after all. Being on a vacation wasn’t the therapeutic treatment she needed.
Being on a vacation with her was.
