He ducks beneath the shadow of the immense mass of foliage and leaves behind him, searching for a slope that might grant him access to the valley pooling far below the jungle canopy. His eyes settle upon a pile of partially-loosened stones, orange and lightly dusted with dried mud; the astronomer scrabbles down them, scraping the palms of his hands and stuttering his boots against the rock as he slips down the ridge.
His feet connect with the ground followed by a satisfying ‘thump’, the canteen at his hip and leather knife scabbard jangling together. The water in his canteen gives a slurping plop as it settles. Shrugging the straps of his pack about his shoulders, he sets off into the undergrowth and tangled, lush creepers. Yellow-white blooms pepper the scene, buttery soft and pleasing to the eye.
The forest all around him is vibrant, filled with the chattering of forest creatures and enthusiastic birdsong. Although his back is slick with briny sweat, a muddy, scratched sheen covering his arms and legs, shins burning bright and throbbing with dull pain, he feels magnificent and present in the world. As his eyes roam the surrounding weltering lattice of climbing vines and fiery-colored plants, a peculiar calmness settles over his mind and body, a swaddling blanket of footwork, stepping rhythm and a thorough quenching of his need for adventure.
Out here, it is easy to imagine what it was like before the plum-purplish haze had settled over the sky from the emission of vicious gases into the atmosphere, before there were such things as light pollution and exhaust pipes. The sky will no doubt be clear tonight, untainted by industrial glamour. An idyllic skyscape to direct the lens of his telescope towards curves slowly above, endlessly patient and serene long after the sun would give way to nightfall.
