What techniques do you use?

I usually start in grayscale before adding in colors, scribbling with the smallest pencil tool possible to get the vague shape that I want. Then, I go over with different brushes (a watercolor-type usually with opacity super low) to add in small or large areas of brightness and darkness. That way I know if I have enough variation in my dark-light values.
