The assist is dismissed in whatever way makes sense for your character, the important thing is that they do not linger in the fight beyond the rounds in which they are active. So for my assist I have it fade away because I no longer have the energy to sustain it. Or for one of my NPCs I have her soldiers disappear because they are teleported back to home base. You could have the assist simply become too tired/injured to actually fight. The important thing is that they no longer impact the fight once they are no longer being paid for in SP.
The reason you pay for them on the opponents turn is the same reason you pay for a power-up on your opponents turn. They don't lose potency simply because your opponent writes them, anymore than your power-up losing power. In fact it could hurt your opponent if they write them poorly or play them off as a non-issue.
Does that make sense?
