Alphys made her way to the palace, following her previous hunch. It would make it easier if Sans was with Undyne, though then again it may not. Timelines are a bitch.
She felt a fairly large lump in her throat. She was notoriously bad with people, so when situations crop up like this, she couldn’t help but feel the nervousness well up deep in her soul. She wasn’t ready to see Gaster after only just now remembering him, no less having to take charge in his wellbeing. She wasn’t sure what she was going to do.
But as she cleared the Palace Gates, she felt herself scooped up in the arms of a fish woman.
“Alphys you big goof!”
The doctor could feel her spine cracking under the pressure of her affection. She squealed, a little bit from joy, but also from the pain.
“Um… Undyne… I need oxygen.”
“What? Oh! Right!” Undyne said, dropping her down on her feet. She still embraced the good doctor as she looked her the eyes. “How do you keep finding out I’m here?”
“Oh, heh, well, this time Molly texted me.” Alphys said, averting her eyes a little bit in embarrassment. “She’s a bit of a shipper apparently...”
“Shipper? What does that-” Undyne was interrupted mid-thought with a stream of nerd-out memories. ”Oh.”
Sans, who was merely watching the ensuing romance, finally stepped out from behind Undyne, which caught the drake’s attention.
“Oh! Sans! So you were with Undyne!”
“Hey Alphys, do you want to to eat this hot fish?” Sans said, holding out an uneaten fried fish sandwich.
“Oh, geeze...” The doctor turned bright red in an instant.
Undyne suddenly pulled Sans into in a headlock and give the top of his skull a taste of her twisting fist.
“Sans you bonehead!” She said while laughing jovially. “Embarrassing Alphys like that!”
“I am a bonehead.” Sans said plainly, barely reacting to the sudden noogie.
“Shut up!!”
The three settled at the same ice cream parlor. Alphys pretended she hadn’t been there earlier that day, but the looks the waitress was giving her was hard to ignore. Sans got a ketchup sorbet, which got odd looks from his compadres. Undyne on the other hand, ordered the nori ice cream. Alphys got a red bean milkshake with pocky on the side for dipping.
While waiting for their desserts, Alphys got to talk about her work, her breakthroughs in holographic technology. Undyne got to talk about her business with an evil tree. Halfway through telling her epic tale, they were interrupted by someone who was walking by: Sylvia Black, second in command of Ambrosia was making her way through the store. She had three milkshakes in a take out cup holder tray. Undyne took the moment to speak up.
“Sylvia! You got any missions for me?”
Undynes voice almost startled the punk girl, her mind obviously somewhere else at the moment. After a moment deliberation, she finally responded.
“Right. Word has it a new skeleton has come into town-”
“Gaster” Undyne said.
“Ah, good, you’ve heard of him.” Sylvia said, relieved at her job finally being easier for once. “He’s probably just looking for shelter, but the guards were unnerved. Can you check up on him, make sure he’s not here to cause trouble?”
“Ah, well, we were going to do that anyways.”
“Great! You do that.” She said with a smile. She made her way to the door. “Sorry I can’t stay to chat, but i’m late for a meeting with two shih tsus and a tanuki.”
As soon as Sylvia was gone, the waitress finally came with their ice cream in toe. As
“So tell me more about this Gaster guy, would be nice to know a little more about who we should be looking out for.”
“He’s like a scientist.” Stated Sans plainly. “And he is a skeleton.”
“What do you know Alphys?”
As she expected, Sans was going to be no help at all. The doctor was on her own in explaining Gaster.
“Well, he was like my mentor for a while.” Said Alphys.
“Wait, really?” Undyne responded. “Like me and Asgore?”
“Yeah, I worked under him in the lab… well, in before an accident made me the head royal scientist.”
“An accident?”
“Yeah, he fell into the core. It put him out of time and space, erasing him from existence.”
“I guess his time was at an end.” Quipped Sans
“Most people’s memories of him were wiped, including mine. I couldn’t remember him until he e-mailed me earlier today.”
“Woah wait, so you didn’t even remember this guy and suddenly he’s calling in favors?” said Undyne. She imagined a sudden long lost family member abruptly moving into your house and using up all your towels. “That sucks!”
“Yeah.” Said Alphys, solemnly.
