Dear Agnès,
I am one of a Thousand Sons, with no inheritance. My mind, body, and steel are all that I own, taken as the spoils of a war without foreseeable end. My brothers and cousins have fallen, one by one, until only a handful remain who remember why we fight. In the chaos of war, fully half of us forsook out absent and resentful father. We found new purpose in the embrace of patrons who accepted us for who we were, what we were. Now, the descendants of those who stayed loyal to our father and those who turned from him find themselves locked in the same war that was started nearly eleven thousand years ago. The few who survive from those ancient times are almost exclusively those who forsook our father, and we are hunted and despised for what we did.
I ask you, Agnès, is it better to serve and obey the man who gave you life, even if he despises you, or is it better to serve those who accept you for what you are? Is it better to be a slave to tradition, or to progress? These are things that have been argued for millennia in my world, and will be argued for millennia more. Perhaps the wisdom of another reality can aid in settling this matter. What are your thoughts?
