If I have a large group should we split into little squads to get more ground covered or run around as one large squad

To be honest, I'd recommend having little squads -- more ground = more intel.

In a large group, the best characters are going to overshadow their peers. That's great if you're the focal point, but it's not great to be the person who gets turned into the meat-shield.
