If you think you can write out a compelling arc for Whirda on the island, I think you'd be better off on your own trying to ambush people every now and again. You certainly could pull off the partner or small group dynamic, but I think you'd be better of spending most of your time alone. Even with a poor weapon, you have enough writing talent to make a lot of people miserable if they run into Whirda.
