Digimon (Seasons 1, 2, 3 4(you can skip this one) and 5. The rest are horrible, though they are doing a new season and bringing the original characters back)

Yu Gi Oh GX was the shit when I was a kid, man. I didn't watch the original so much, nor could I really get into it.

Things I would actually recommend personally based on what you like:
Parasyte
Cowboy Bebop
Space Dandy
Monster
Record of Lodoss War
Tokyo Ghoul
Higurashi no noro Kei / When the Cicada's Cry
Black Lagoon
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Code Geass is pretty much right up your alley based on things I know you like.

Things I recommend avoiding based on listed preferences and a few of my own:

Death Note. Just don't even bother. The planning and scheming in this completely fall apart in the second half, and the first half has some major holes that go unexplained.
Bleach. Seriously just not worth your time. This is cemented as the worst on this list no contest. Even if you liked shows like DBZ this is far, far worse in every single possible way.
Naruto. If you think you wouldn't like DBZ this definitely wont be your type of show.
Yu Yu Hakusho is also on the avoid list if you don't like things like DBZ. Even if I think it's the best entry here on the avoid list.
