Tell me animes that I should watch - Darth Vader - 04-09-2015 Okaaaaaaaay. Anime is something I've been kicking myself lately to try and get into, and whilst there's a lot of 'em I'm already aware of and going to give them a watch sometime, there's still quite a few more obscure and lesser-known decent ones that I haven't came across. You can recommend to me animes that you enjoy, or ones that you think would suit my tastes here, if you want ![]() It's preferable (but not mandatory) they have full English dubs, though. Subtitled is fine, but I find the Japanese voices in the background a bit distracting :3 Animes I've watched Attack on Titan (5 or so episodes in now, I love that shit already) Animes I've been recommended Naruto Soul Eater Kill la Kill Aldnoah Zero Code Geass Fairy Tail One Piece Hunter x Hunter Full Metal Alchemist Rurouni Kenshin Outlaw Star Trigun S-CRY-Ed Yu Yu Hakusho Sword Art Online Full Metal Panic Avatar The Last Air Bender Digimon Parasyte Cowboy Bebop Space Dandy Monster Record of Lodoss War Tokyo Ghoul Higurashi no noro Kei / When the Cicada's Cry Black Lagoon Legend of the Galactic Heroes Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works Fate / Zero Mobile Suit:Gundam Wing Eureka Seven Ergo Proxy Deadman Wonderland Noein Sailor Moon Crystal Space Dandy Tower of Druaga Shinsekai Yor Toradora, White Album 2 Kokoro Connect Zero no Tsukaima Black Butler Monster Berserk Gantz Tenchi Muyo Claymore Log Horizon Another K Project Reborn Blue Exorcist No Game No Life( The World God Only Knows Mirai Nikki Durarara Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic Time of Eve Animes I'll probably avoid Dragon Ball Z (Yeah, yeah. It's a classic and all that, I know, but whilst I've heard that it's a got a brilliant plot line and can be considered a worthy watch, I've equally been told that it doesn't cater for more maturer audiences very well.) Yu Gi Oh (Not out of any specific hatred for it, or anything. But this is the one anime I remember distinctly getting into as a kid. Don't remember much of it, then again, so rewatching it through could always be nice) Animes I've been recommended to avoid Death Note Animes I've been suggested that I might or might not like Majhou Shoujou Madoka Magicka Rebuilds of Neon Genesis Evangelion Black Lagoon. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Yuusah Oh Gaogairgar Getter Robo Apocalypse Bleach Blade and Soul Outbreak Company SAO Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Monkey D. Luffy - 04-09-2015 One Piece of you're willing to devote hours upon hours of your time. Also keep in mind it doesn't get really good until around the Nami/Arlong Arc. I also recommend Yu Yu Hakusho. Again, doesn't get really good until the second arc or so. Hunter x Hunter Full Metal Alchemist Fairy Tail Bleach Rurouni Kenshin Outlaw Star Trigun S-CRY-Ed Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Darth Vader - 04-09-2015 Monkey D. Luffy Wrote:One Piece of you're willing to devote hours upon hours of your time. Also keep in mind it doesn't get really good until around the Nami/Arlong Arc. Added those to muh list. Thank ya Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Cloud Strife - 04-09-2015 Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood Sword Art Online Full Metal Panic Avatar The Last Air Bender (Not an Anime as such, but still you HAVE to watch it) Digimon (Seasons 1, 2, 3 4(you can skip this one) and 5. The rest are horrible, though they are doing a new season and bringing the original characters back) Don't discount Dragon Ball Z, it caters towards mature audiences. Yugioh is another good one, but I wouldn't watch anything after Yugioh GX Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Senator Armstrong - 04-09-2015 Things I would actually recommend personally based on what you like: Parasyte Cowboy Bebop Space Dandy Monster Record of Lodoss War Tokyo Ghoul Higurashi no noro Kei / When the Cicada's Cry Black Lagoon Legend of the Galactic Heroes Code Geass is pretty much right up your alley based on things I know you like. >>>>>>Jojo's Bizarre Adventure<<<<< Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works anime, not movie. Fate / Zero Things I recommend avoiding based on listed preferences and a few of my own: Death Note. Just don't even bother. The planning and scheming in this completely fall apart in the second half, and the first half has some major holes that go unexplained. Bleach. Seriously just not worth your time. This is cemented as the worst on this list no contest. Even if you liked shows like DBZ this is far, far worse in every single possible way. Naruto. If you think you wouldn't like DBZ this definitely wont be your type of show. Yu Yu Hakusho is also on the avoid list if you don't like things like DBZ. Even if I think it's the best entry here on the avoid list. Hesitant suggestions ( Ones I'm not wholly sure you'l like but are good anyways): Majhou Shoujou Madoka Magicka Rebuilds of Neon Genesis Evangelion Black Lagoon. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Yuusah Oh Gaogairgar Getter Robo Apocalypse I'll also echo Luffy's suggestions outside of the one I put on the avoid list. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Darth Vader - 04-09-2015 Edward Elric Wrote:Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood Added. I might reconsider on DBZ, maybe. Yu Gi Oh GX was the shit when I was a kid, man. I didn't watch the original so much, nor could I really get into it. Senator Armstrong Wrote:Things I would actually recommend personally based on what you like: All added. Again, I might reconsider on DBZ. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Obito Uchiha - 04-09-2015 I also recommend these: Mobile Suit:Gundam Wing Mobile Suit:Gundam 00 Eureka Seven Ergo Proxy Deadman Wonderland Noein Sailor Moon Crystal Space Dandy Tower of Druaga Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Erza Scarlet - 04-09-2015 We've discussed Shinsekai Yori, and I have since watched the first episode of the English dub, which I believe to be good enough. Obviously you don't look much like you'll be getting into any romance-y or slice-of-life sort of stuff, BUT if you're just barely interested the best starting place is probably either Toradora, White Album 2, or even Kokoro Connect, only the last of which has any sort of supernatural stuff really at all. I'm not sure about English dubs on the last two, but Toradora's is hilarious. As far as standard Shounen stuff, I think it's mostly covered by the above comments. Oh, and there's Zero no Tsukaima, which sort of jump-started the modern Tsundere thing. It's far more romcommy than shounen, but it has some good action sequences as well. If you watch the first episode of any of these (Other than Shinsekai Yori - That one may take a few to get into, but it's worth it) and don't like it, you can probably skip it. Also, hell yes GX was the shit. Watched all 200-ish episodes, and the quality was solid throughout. (Though the last quarter never got an English dub) Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Darth Vader - 04-09-2015 Obito Uchiha Wrote:I also recommend these: Erza Scarlet Wrote:We've discussed Shinsekai Yori, and I have since watched the first episode of the English dub, which I believe to be good enough. Added, thank you ^^ Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Proto Man - 04-09-2015 Berserk Gantz Both are horribly bloody, horribly mature, and damage your soul. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Darth Vader - 04-09-2015 Proto Man Wrote:Berserk Muhahahaah, added. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Proto Man - 04-09-2015 Tenchi Muyo. They got three seasons and a spin-off. It's not the most deep or profound anime, but it's fun to watch and certainly for an older audience. The voice acting is a bonus. There's a new season, but I couldn't get into it because I was too used to the dub. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Darth Vader - 04-09-2015 Proto Man Wrote:Tenchi Muyo. Yup, noted. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Atelos - 04-09-2015 Most of these are action animes except ones I put in Parenthesis Things I Recommend Another(This is a horror/suspense anime) K Project Reborn(At first its a comedy but transforms into an action) Blue Exorcist No Game No Life(Not really action its just kinda funny) The World God Only Knows (This is comedy but it has some good serious moments Mirai Nikki (Action with suspense) Durarara(Suspense/Comedy anime) Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic Time of Eve(Not really a comedy or action but its a good anime with a very powerful message) ALSO FATE ZEEERROO :gilgamesh: Things I would avoid Blade and Soul Outbreak Company SAO after Episode 24 Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Erza Scarlet - 04-09-2015 I have to ask, why specifically ep. 24 for SAO? The general consensus, in my experience, is that the best of the series is the first 6ish episodes and most of GGO. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Atelos - 04-09-2015 I just didn't enjoy personally GGO. That ,however, is just my opinion. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Monkey D. Luffy - 04-09-2015 Oh, and Claymore! Though the manga is far better than the anime since they had to cut the anime shorter. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Erza Scarlet - 04-09-2015 Log Horizon is also pretty good. Similar to SAO in premise but not so much in actual story. Bunch of people get trapped in an MMO, do political intrigue as well as action fighting stuff, yadda yadda. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Darth Vader - 04-09-2015 Monkey D. Re: Tell me animes that I should watch - Dark Link - 04-09-2015 I'm afraid I have no idea what you may or may not like, so I recommend you do some extra research on any suggestions I may give you. With that in mind, here is some of the stuff I enjoyed: - Full Metal Alchemist (2003) and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Both great shows with a relatively unique setting and very likable characters. Some people find the relatively quick transitions from comedy to drama and vice-versa to be somewhat jarring, but I personally thought the shows managed to mix the two quite well. Though the 2003 series gets a lot of flak and does deviate from the plot of the manga (Brotherhood is a faithful adaptation of the manga), it is nevertheless a great show in its own right and arguably even does a few things better than the manga/Brotherhood (though, inevitably, it also does some things worse). Also, both shows are famous for having excellent dubs, so you need not be concerned about that. That said, I don't recommend Conqueror of Shamballa, the movie follow-up to the 2003 series. In spite of a decent premise, the end result was just kind of meh. - Yu-Gi-Oh and Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters - Though I personally didn't really care for the few episodes of GX that I watched and haven't bothered with any the shows that followed after that, I can recommend the first two series. Before I say anything else, I need to clarify that Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters is known simply as Yu-Gi-Oh outside of Japan, since the original Toei series was never dubbed. That said, I would recommend both. If you can look past the fact that it isn't dubbed, the original Toei series is a decent watch for the simple fact that it depicts a variety of games and not just Duel Monsters like the later shows. As for Duel Monsters, it has a pretty novel mythology and the focus on battling via card games really changes up the dynamic (even if it does essentially fall into its own routine as a result of this approach). Also, though it contains a fair bit of censorship, there's no denying that the quality of the actual voice acting in the dub is quite good. A word of warning, though: Duel Monsters is quite a lengthy series (I think it has over 500 episodes). That said, with the exception of the Waking the Dragons/DOMA arc, you could safely skip most of the filler episodes. For the most part, they're pretty awful. - Shaman King - It's been a long time since I've watched this series, but I remember enjoying it quite a bit. Though it is a relatively standard shonen series, I think it's still worth a watch. Though it is dubbed, I only watched it subbed, so I cannot vouch for its quality. Also, you might want to check out some of the other shonen shows before you consider this one. - Ghost in the Shell (the first movie) - probably one of the most defining cyberpunk works. Admittedly, it is a bit heavy-handed with its themes, but is nevertheless a very compelling movie. I can't talk about the other GitS works that take place in their own continuities, but at least this one is a must watch. However, you can safely skip the sequel, Innocence, as it is horribly pretentious to the point of just being tedious to watch. I have some more recommendations, but that's all I have time to write down right now. I'll return to this topic later. |
