Second Character Thoughts

I'm not sure I want to keep Abbot. He's cool, but I've kind of been jinxed with him. Had trouble writing solo, now I tried to join a thread and I killed it.

Any canon characters that people would like to see? I've got a lot of ideas that haven't gotten that far, one of which is Ouma Shu from Guilty Crown.

Well if you need character ideas to toss around, what sorta of characters do you like playing: video game, book, movie etc?

Generally I find these kind of threads, people tend to gather all the ideas, carefully consider ... then ignore and go with what their gut tells them.

I will say give it some time and mull it over. Hell, you don't even need to get a second character for a while. I didn't. I actually made up mock sheets for several characters over several months before deciding on Enel (it came down to him vs Ling Yao, if you're curious). The fact that I gave it so long makes me sure of my committment.

I will say the major factors in choosing a character for me were: variation from my main character. Both in personality, powers, everything. And someone who I could potentially give a lot of development too - again, both personality-wise and story-wise. It's nice to have options.

It might help you Harry to create mock sheets, mock long-term stories, and a write out a few smaller stories for your character choices.

I did this back when I decided to play Proto Man on this website's spiritual predecessor. It may seem like a lot, but in the end, you'll discover who is a fit for you.

I've had similar internal struggles about whether to pick up a multi/switch. Story is a big part of it for me; some characters have so much pre-defined history that you can't do much with it, but at the same time having nothing to work with can be paralyzing (at least in my experience). What really helps me decide is trying to write a few posts as that character and see if it comes out the way you'd like. In the past I've had the itch to switch but I just couldn't do the character justice.

Not sure if that helps at all, but yeah.

As someone who did what Greg did, then got excited over a particular concept suddenly and threw away Ditto, then realised that was the better choice and went back, definitely take some time to work it out. I went through about three different characters before I settled on DItto (Adam Jensen from Deus Ex:HR, Earthworm Jim, and Giovanni himself) and I'm glad I took the time to consider what I really wanted from a second character. Switching to the Lich King was an impulsive change and it was dumb; I had no real plan for him and just liked him because he was an immediate badass. That quickly ran out and Ditto was definitely more attractive afterwards, so make sure the character is the one you want.

I'm more of a good character concept guy, but I have trouble following through. Ganondorf is probably my longest running character ever. However, when it comes to second characters, the above suggestions are all good. Just make sure the concept is interesting enough to you for you to keep.

What I ended up doing was taking a second character who is completely the opposite of my primary. After all, if your characters are pretty much the same guy, why take another? So, that's my suggestion: Pick something that you can go to when you're burnt out on Harry.
