Also, read read read. Most of my improvement has come from reading the work of others. Helps me expand my vocabulary and see how other people handle things that I struggle with.

I especially recommend the 'Taking notes' effective writing strategy.

Quote:We want the writing to be perfect and we want the paper done as soon as possible. We know what we know but we don't know what our readers know. We know how the memo should sound, but we don't have all the facts we need. We know everything about the software, but we don't know what an article should look like. We know what we have to say but we are afraid that it won't measure up to our expectations or to our readers' expectations.

All of these feelings are natural and normal. Everyone finds writing a challenge.

This is possibly the most important message to take from this. If you want to improve your writing because you feel it isn't developed enough, that's actually a good thing. But that doesn't mean you should stop writing altogether, whether those feelings come from perceived inadequacy or some other anxious feeling. There's always opportunity for improvement, because writing is not only an exercise in creativity but also a process of invention!

Think about how many books there are in libraries, many of them from years and years ago! Think of how many you've ignored, dismissed and totally disregarded for another that was more interesting or personally important to you. And yet, the books are still there, because someone, somewhere, has or has had a desire to read them. Just because there are masterworks out there doesn't mean anyone should just up and say, "well, they've done it all and sold over a million copies, might as well give up now!!!!!!"

We as writers might look at the really successful stories and gape in awe or intimidation, wondering at how we could ever be up to snuff in the face of such mastery, but the more you read these books or posts, the more you subconsciously seek to understand the process of making a character seem like a person, a setting seem like a world, and a plot seem like a story, the more easily you will be able to craft your own. The best thing to do, truthfully, is to just do the writing thing.

Ask for pointers from others if you must, my inbox is always open, but also try and sort these ideas out on your own using the framework of standard knowledge you've gathered from other reading. To improve things such as grammar, spelling or whatever, you can likely find grammar/spelling checkers online. The Hemingway Editor is a real help to me.
