Mei [ALT]
#1
Character name: Mei-Ling Zhou

Character source: Overwatch

Character history: Though many blamed the planet's escalating, unexplained climate phenomena on the advent of new technologies, the rapidly growing omnic population, and drastically increased consumption of resources, the true cause remained unknown. To find a solution, Overwatch established a series of eco-Watchpoints at remote, critical locations worldwide.

Mei-Ling Zhou was a member of this multi-year initiative. A peerless climatologist, she had introduced cutting-edge innovations in the field of climate manipulation that protected at-risk areas in Asia and beyond. She was assigned to the program's monitoring station at Watchpoint: Antarctica when disaster struck: a sudden, catastrophic polar storm battered the installation and cut it off from the outside world, leaving the facility damaged and the scientists stranded. As their supplies dwindled, they entered cryostasis in a last-ditch effort to survive until a rescue attempt could be made.

But that rescue never came. It was years later when the team's cryogenics chamber was finally discovered. Mei, still in hibernation, was the only survivor. Physically, she hadn't aged a day, but the world Mei awoke to had gone through considerable changes: Overwatch was no more, the serious climate issues had worsened, and none of the eco-watchpoints were in operation. Any clues that they had uncovered were lost.

Mei decided to continue her work on her own. Equipped with a portable version of her climate-manipulation technology, she traveled around the world, hoping to re-establish the eco-network and track down the causes of the threats to the planet's ecosystem.

At some point after this, Mei got in touch with Winston, who had issued a recall order for Overwatch agents. He gave her a journal, telling her that people would find her "unique" perspective interesting. She made her first journal entry and made it available to the public while in the Yukon near Mount Logan, while testing her new gear. She concluded that it was in working order (a step up from a few days ago, when she'd accidentally frozen her arm), and began studying the local wildlife. Six days later, she decided to head to Asia, to investigate the abandoned Overwatch stations there. Before doing so, she took a break by flying into Los Angeles to see Six-Gun Killer. Two days after that, she was in Asia, investigating a mountain ecosystem. She slipped off the mountain, and was taken by Omni before hitting the bottom.

Starting Proficiencies (3000): Ranged (1000), Area Shield (400), Ranged Materialize (600), Debuff (1000)

Starting Powers: N/A

Starting Moves: (1200)

Endothermic Blaster (600, requires Ranged, Debuff): This weapon shoots concentrated cold in a 15-foot-long, 6-inch-wide stream. It takes about 1 second for the stream to reach max distance. When the stream hits, it immediately but only slightly slows the enemy. The effect worsens the longer the enemy is exposed up until they're frozen after 4 seconds of exposure. If the opponent can avoid the stream for two seconds, all debuffs from the blaster are lifted. When frozen, the effect lasts for 1.5 seconds. After this, the debuff is completely removed. Repeated freezings have no permanent effects, but limbs may turn numb for a short while after several times. The stream can be held up for 20 seconds before needing to reload.

The blaster can also form an icicle the size of an average man's forearm to shoot at an opponent. It takes .75 seconds to fire and uses as much ammo as using the cold stream for three seconds. The icicle deals a decent amount of damage up close, and can also be shot up to 30 feet away, but damage starts dropping past 15 feet.

It takes 5 seconds to reload the blaster.

Great Wall of Ice (300, requires Ranged Materialize, Area Shield): Mei creates a durable 10-foot-tall, 15-foot-wide wall of pure ice up to 20 feet away. It takes 1 second to summon the wall. It can be summoned under people, including Mei, which pushes them to the top of the wall. The wall can be summoned on as little as 2 feet of ground, with the remaining ice hanging in midair. It cannot be summoned on walls. If summoned in an area smaller than the wall, it will shrink to compensate. The durability of the wall is proportionate to the amount of ammo left when summoned, and a reload is required afterwards. The wall lasts for up to 5 seconds, and a cooldown of 7 seconds after the wall breaks is needed before another wall can be summoned.

Cryo-Freeze: (300, requires Area Shield) Mei surrounds herself in a giant block of ice in the space of 1.5 seconds. The block is very difficult to break, but Mei can't do anything while encased in ice. It lasts for 5 seconds or until Mei decides to break out. The durability of the ice block is proportionate to the amount of ammo left in the blaster, and a reload is needed afterwards. Once the ice block breaks, a 10 second cooldown is needed before it can be used again. Using it repeatedly will numb Mei.

The first question I have is just how much ammo does Mei have on her at any given time? Since all of your moves revolve around the gun using up set amounts of ammo, we'll need to know around how much she keeps on hand. It can be re-summoned between battles, but how much is normally at-the-ready? This point applies to all of your moves, so I'm not sure how you'd like to organize it, but I'll list my other questions separately.

Blaster (debuff mode): Does the cold blast do any damage or just slow?

Blaster (shard mode): What is the travel speed on the shards? How accurate are they?

Both uses: Can this be fired in motion? Does this require concentration to maintain the blast/form shards? Can this be used with other moves or with other modes of the gun?

Wall of Ice: How thick is the wall? How much damage can it take, roughly, at full power vs. lowest power? How long does it take for the wall to form? Can this be used in motion? Does it require concentration to create the wall? Can this be used with other moves?

Cryo Freeze: What is the size of the ice block that's formed? Similar to the wall, what's the difference in durability, roughly, between power settings? Can this be used in motion? Does it require concentration? Can this be used with other moves?

I was under the impression that you had unlimited ammo, considering characters like Yukki Kazuto don't mention the amount of ammo they carry on hand.

The spray deals negligible damage.

The icicle shoots at the speed of a fully-drawn arrow, and accuracy is average.

Both modes can be used while moving, although Mei needs to slow down when preparing an icicle. They cannot be used while summoning an ice wall or entering Cyro Freeze, but can be used afterwards once reloaded.

The wall is 8 inches thick. It takes another second for the wall to finish building after being summoned. At full power, it can handle several sledgehammer swings. At its weakest, it can only handle one sledgehammer swing. Mei needs to concentrate and stand still during the initial summoning process, but is free once the wall starts building itself. Similarly, no other moves can be used while summoning.

When in Cyro Freeze, Mei is surrounded by at least 6 inches of ice on all sides, although it's uneven in certain areas. The block is about 1.5X as strong as the wall. Mei needs to focus and stand still, and can't use other moves until she breaks out of the block.

The reason I brought up ammo is because that's usually how people represent 'stamina' or 'charges' with a gun. In the case of a regular pistol like Yukki's, ammo is not really an issue as it's moderately low damage and just fires normal bullets. It's more important here as it affects all of your moves directly and allowing for the only large downside of a move to be a waiting time for reloading can make moves kinda broken. The easiest way around this would be to either give each use its own kind of cryo cell and state how many she keeps on hand for battle, or state the gun's ammo capacity and mention a cost of fatigue to summon more ammo in-battle. Basically what we're try to avoid here is having all 'energy' required to use the move eliminated by the gun doing all the work.

The other way we can do this is to change how the moves work somewhat. Credit to Dark Link for these ideas:

Cryo Blaster:
For the stream of cold, we can either have it require a charge time to calibrate or something, OR we can limit the range and duration of the spray and have it be an all-or-nothing use where the entire clip has to be expended before you can use the ice shard. For the icicles, we can just list the uses as 6 per clip with the noted reload in-between as that's a bit less confusing.

Ice Wall and Ice Block: Instead of relying on ammo numbers, these can be given a set value for durability and a charge time of around 3-5 seconds before casting. If you wanted to make the wall somewhat less durable, you could have the charge time be the 1 second you listed. As the block is pretty sturdy, you'd need to have closer to 5 seconds for a charge.

For all moves, we'd need to explicitly state how fatiguing a move is. I do realize that it doesn't make the most sense to have a gun make you feel tired from firing it too much, but Omniphysics would make it so. Like I said above, if you instead want to have it require ammo and rapidly summoning ammo in combat is what makes it fatiguing, that's something you could try.

Alright. For the Cyro Blaster, it takes 4 seconds to calibrate between modes. Trying to use another mode early will cause the gun to gum up and backfire.

The wall will instead take 2 seconds to summon and 2 more before it fully assembles. The Ice Block will now take 5 seconds to activate.

Mei carries 3 clips of ammo at all times, and it takes 10 seconds to summon another 3 clips in the heat of battle and another 5 to reload. Mei can only resummon about 3 times before she is too summon any more.

Alright, that looks good for the Blaster modes.

For the Great Wall of Ice and Cryo Freeze, are you wanting to make them independent of ammo with the changes made or keep them tied to ammo clips? If you want them to rely on ammo, how much ammo would each cost? I'd imagine Cryo Freeze would be a full clip as it's so sturdy, while the wall could be 1/3-1/2 of a clip (if you make it cost more, it will take more damage or last a bit longer if you'd prefer).

If you want to get rid of the ammo for these two, how draining would they be on her person since we're taking ammo out of the equation for that? In terms of logic you could maybe RP it as Mei over-clocking her gun with omnilium to cause the effect, draining it from her hand and tiring her.

They'll still rely on ammo. The wall will take up 1/2 of the clip, and a full clip for the block.

Make a new thread in the Roster section and copy and paste the above into the first post. It is also highly recommended that you make more posts within your own roster that details any extra information about your character that you wish to include. Any future purchases can be made here.

Once all that is done, go here to get your account approved for chat box use if Omni hasn’t already done so.

Thanks for sticking around the Omniverse and enjoy your new character!
