The Omniverse Dictionary
#1
Like any isolated collection of communicating humans, the writers of the Omniverse often resort to various phrases and jargon when talking about our shared world.

The purpose of this thread is to assist new players in learning what the various abbreviations and slang terms mean, and examples of how they are used.

#Hypetrain [haɪp - treɪn] - Noun:
1. A hashtag referencing something of great hype arriving at a point in the future, usually used in the build-up to a formal announcement.

"Can't wait until this summer! #HypeTrain"

Origin: Proto Man in the buildup to DA2015 and beyond, although he assumes that such a concept existed on the internet long before.

40ker [fɔrti-keɪər] - Noun:
1. A title referencing members of the site who play as characters derived from the Warhammer 40,000 franchise.

"The 40kers finally escaped Coruscant. Only took two months."

Origin: Galel Baraz, Tartaros, and Okor Paleblood are three ultramarines from the aforementioned franchise who banded together for the Dante's Abyss competition. As such, a term naturally developed to refer to them collectively.

Alt [alt] - Noun:
1. An abbreviation of 'Alternate Character', something which many members of the site have at least one of.

"Let me switch to my alt real quick."

Origin: It's pretty straightforward, really. Don't look at me like that.

ao [ou] - Adverb:
1. A superlative, usually used in a positive context, to describe the superiority of a given subject.

"Hawaiian pizza is ao delicious, dude."

Origin: Originally a typo of the word 'so', a certain admin thought it was just a hip new word kids these days were using, so it was just adopted as such.

Blargh [blarg] - Exclamation:
1. An exclamatory sentiment used to express an explosive quantity of a multitude of feelings, ranging from anxiety to panic.
2. A melancholy greeting.

"Blargh!"

"Blarghagarg!"

Origin: Adam Gaite, ya fool.

DA [dë-ă] - Abbreviation:
1. A shorthand for Dante's Abyss, a tournament style survival contest that lastest several days within an isolated island in the Omniverse.

"Some writers are still burned out from DA; they put a lot of work into it."

Origin: Refer to definition.

Derper - Noun:
1. An alcoholic beverage containing Dr Pepper and rum. Hence the name. The admin's beverage of choice.

"I call this… The derper!"

Jank [dʒæŋk] - Noun, Verb, Adjective:
1. Anything that is generally crappy/no fun at all.
2. To twist, warp or mess with.

1. "This injured hand jank has really been a downer."
2. "No janking with the results, Leigh!"

Origin: This was how Greg initially referred to the problems with his hand. Now it's a pretty universal thing.

Janksore [ʤæŋk-sɔr] - Noun:
1. People who interfere or mess with others too heavily.

"Stop harassing our new writers, you janksores!"

Origin: Greg.

Jankstorm [ʤæŋk-stɔrm] - Noun:
1. Something or someone who holds maximum jank. Similar but stronger to janksore.

"You fuckin' JANKSTORM"

Origin: Greg.

Lubbock'd [lūh-bok-d] - Adjective
1. To experience a long string of bad luck, capped by a miserable defeat.

"He got Lubbock'd after starving for two weeks and finally tripping over the side of a cliff into a pit of scorpions."

Origin: During Dante's Abyss, the contestant Lubbock was brutally beaten within an inch of his life over the course of two days before being slowly suffocated when an opponent held his head into a sand bank with her foot. It was such a miserable sight that it immediately was adopted into the common vernacular. Lubbock often finds himself continually Lubbock'd to this day.

Murder-Kill [mərdər-kɪl] - Verb
1. To end something's life in a particularly abrupt or irreverent fashion.

"Yo, Specter got mad heated after Dredd murder-killed him."

Origin: Alex

olo [ :iiam: ] - Abbreviation:
1. Laughing out loud.

"I didn't do anything today, olo!"

Origin: An old, archaic form of "lol" that emerged after the great AOL Group Chat Wars of '05. Car chases and great days were had. People were murdered. Childhood figures were ruined. Relationships were irrevocably altered. I think there was a chocolate fountain?

Omniversary - Noun:
1. The anniversary of the date the Omniverse officially opened its doors and began the scramble, 28 August, 2013. Traditionally celebrated with a picture of Greg giving a thumbs up and/or toasting with a random beverage, usually a derper*.

"Happy Omniversary!"

Origin: Luffy coined the phrase.

SS [ēs-ēs] - Abbreviation:
1. The Secondary Saga. A large group storylines held in 2015 revolving around a group of secondaries' attempts to find and meet Omni. Each of the secondaries was written by a regular writer.

"SS BEST SAGA 2015 REPRESENT"

Stacker, The [stæk-ūr] - Noun:
1. Nanoha Takamachi, a rare an elusive member occasionally seen before vanishing, much like a golden snitch or metal slime.

"The Omni-Fighters are feeling elated about their recent success in defeating the Stacker. It's been over a year since the Stacker had been seen, the last Metroid was in captivity, and the Omniverse was at peace. But was this merely the calm before the storm? What has the Stacker have in store for our intrepid heroes? Tune in to find out... next time on STACKER WRITES!"

Origin: Originally used by Greg to make fun of Nanoha Takamachi's name over Skype chats, by calling her Nanoha Stakalakamachi. Shortened to Stacker, for convenience, and later The Stacker as she was driven to extinction by over-trolling and the name became legend whispered on the wind. A common misconception is that this is a typo of 'slacker'. This is merely coincidence.

Unjank [ūn-ʤæŋk] - Noun, Verb, Adjective:
1. The opposite of jank. Good.
2. A good thing or person.
3. To de-jankify something.

"You're pretty unjank, Gildarts."

"I need to go do exercises to unjank my hand."

Origin: Greg.

:frogsiren: [ahfkslekahfbebwks] - Emote:
1. An expression of exasperation.
2. An expression of panic.
3. An expression of awe.
4. An expression of confusion.

"I've been awake for 64 hours. :frogsiren: "

Origin: ...I dunno. Greg?

Verse [vɜrs] - Noun:
1. Any of the isolated realms of the Omniverse, such as the Vasty Deeps or Endless Dunes.

"Which verse are you currently in?"

Origin: I dunno, what else would you call them? Note, not to be confused with 'Verse, where the apostrophe denotes it as shorthand for 'Omniverse'.

Always adding more! Let me know your ideas!

olo -- [No pronunciation offered] - Abbreviation:

An old archaic form of "lol" that emerged after the great AOL Group Chat Wars of '05. Car chases and great days were had. People were murdered. Childhood figures were ruined. Relationships were irrevocably altered. I think there was a chocolate fountain?

Origin: As to who originally stated olo? It is unclear. That person is either a corpse or rotting in a padded cell somewhere in a CIA black site. Don't ask and we won't kill you.

Demetri [dunno how to do this part] - Verb:
1. To charge heedlessly into danger without regard for the consequences, even when the chances of success -- or survival -- are virtually zero.

2. (Pulling a Demetri) To blindly agree to a task without all of the details and wind up in virtually unsurvivable danger as a result.

"Man, charging right into New Babylon and getting stuck in the middle of a four on one? Wow, way to pull a Demetri."

Origin: The Path to New Babylon thread, wherein Demetri followed Daxter to assist with a personal vendetta the ottsel had

Bwagh [bwa:h] Exclamation -
1. An exclamatory sentiment similar to 'Blargh', with the significance being 'Bwagh' is more often used by those who are inexorably exasperated and/or deathly bored.

"Bwagh..."

Origin: A very tired Adam once said 'Bwagh', and was swiftly commented on by Teal, saying that he failed 'Blargh'. Ruby quickly supplied the significant difference between the two for the Blarghmaster, who later praised him by saying he hit the 'nail on the head'.

Sinbad [sinbæd] Proper Noun -
1. A nickname used to refer to Thaal Sinestro/Bandit With No Name.
Etymology: From Sinestro: "Sin", from Bandit: "bad". 'n' is removed for comic relief purposes.

"Sinbad's really doing well with the judging, especially with the new job and whatnot."

Origin: Ruby once referred to Sinestro as 'Sinbad' in chat, before explaining the etymology of said nickname. The nickname is Archangel (Proto) Approved.

Phh Approval [? æppru:væl] Noun (?), Verb (?) -
1. The requirement for a word to be added to the Omniverse dictionary.

"My new word is awaiting Phh Approval."

Um, wrong. As Lubbock I had two deadly encounters and was mercy killed in the very first day.
