The Chronicles of Winry: A Journey Through Camelot
#1
Winry sat at her kitchen table, the only noises that could be heard was the muffled murmuring of the city streets and any bored sighs that Winry decided to let out. Her boredom was unrivalled; she wouldn’t wish this on anyone, not even her worst enemy... or Edward. Winry sighed as she leaned back in her chair, it creaked loudly in retaliation as she did so. Winry stretched her arms above her head before placing her hands on the back of her head, so her shoulders were pointing outwards. Her blonde bangs fell down and over her eyes a little bit. Winry looked at them with an annoyed stair as she attempted to blow them to the side with her mouth - it didn’t work. Winry grumbled as she brushed her bangs to the side with her right hand, she was bored enough, and she didn’t need her own body annoying her right now.
I wonder when Ed will be back’ Winry sighed loudly as she rested her head and arms on the table. The sound of her new necklace colliding with the table reminded her of her gift. Winry smiled as she felt the pendant swing back and forth, the edge of the table cutting the swing short each time.

Maybe next time I should go with him?’ Winry questioned herself as she sat up again. Winry let out a large sigh as she answered her own question.

No, if he left me here, then it’s probably too dangerous.... But I’m bored! And who does he think I am, some sort of weak little girl? I’m just as strong as he is! I mean... I can’t do Alchemy, but... I have my wrench!’ Winry exclaimed angrily as she stood up from her table, almost knocking it over as she did so.
Oh... But maybe He’s right...’ Winry said quietly to herself as she sat back down. Mayne she’d just get in his way if she went with him.

No... I’m better than that!’ Winry reassured herself in a confident tone as she stood up again, turning to her front door. Winry began towards the door as she watched a note fall through the mail slot. It was addressed with her name. She questioned the note in her mind as she bent down to pick it up, her bangs falling out of place again as she did so. Winry sighed at her bangs as she lifted the note from the ground. It was only small, so it couldn’t be a long message.

It’s probably just a request from someone in the city.’ Winry sighed as she opened up the folded piece of paper. Its edges were rough and uneven, as if torn from another, larger, piece of paper. Winry’s eyes widened a little as she read the note.

Winry, Come to The Vasty Deep
and bring your Automail stuff
~Edward

Winry dropped the note as anger began to swell inside of her. Her body began to shake as theimplied meaning of the message became clear to her. He’d broken her Automail again, as if it was a toy he could just repeatedly break and get fixed. Winry threw a small tool box into a duffel bag she had sitting on the couch, it made a metallic clinking noise s it collided with something else that she had in the bag. The noise jolted Winry from her anger fuelled mumbling and growling and reminded her of the last time Edward had broken his arm.

He almost died last time... I hope he’s not hurt!’ Winry exclaimed as she threw the bag over her shoulder and charged out the door.

Camelot was beautiful; the last time she had been here was when she had first arrived, standing over Edward as he lay on the crass, daydreaming. Her duffel bag was heavy, all her tools and Automail parts weighed it down, but that wasn’t stopping her. Winry repositioned the duffel bag as she came over a large hill; as far as she could see were rolling hill sides and small villages. When she was in the city, she’d heard some Primes talking about the gate in the west leading to the Nexus and how you could go anywhere from there, so she was headed west. Camelot was nice, its sun kept it warm, but there was a cool breeze that kept her cool. Winry paused for a moment, taking in the scenery as she stretched her arms up and outwards as she relaxed her muscles.

This is nice. It’s relaxing.’ Winry smiled as she placed her hands on her hips and surveyed the area. Several small villages dotted the hill sides and flat planes, they seemed quiet and peaceful. Winry's smile didn't fade as she thought of her home town, Resembool. It was a small country town that had similar scenery surrounding it. The thoughts of her home town reminded her of when she was a kid. Edward and Alphonse were always fighting over her, which made her laugh. But she could never date someone who was shorter than her...

But now he’s all grown up now...’ Winry mumbled to herself. The last time she’d seen Edward, he’d grown quite a bit. Winry’s face started turning a shade of red before she snapped herself out if whatever thoughts she was having. She didn’t have time for that now, not when she had automail to replace. Winry was still mad at Edward for breaking her automail... again, but he was due for a replacement either way, the amount of growth he had gone through since coming to the Omniverse had caused him to outgrow his old arm, and that’s probably why it had problems in the first place.

That’s why I made this.’ Winry said as she turned to the duffel bag and unzipped it, her box of tools sat next to a newly constructed automail arm. It was for Edward, he didn’t need repairs, he needed a replacement.

I’ll need to replace his arm, not fix the old one.’ Winry grinned as she thought about the pain it would put him through, which would be punishment enough for breaking the old one. Winry laughed manically as she continued on her path.

Winry had been walking for roughly two hours, her feet and legs felt heavy and her duffel bag seemed as though it had been filled with bars of Iron. She wasn’t used to walking such great distances, back in Amestris; she would just get on a train, this new world had made her realize just how used to motorized transport she was. Winry sighed as she dropped her bag on the grass and sat down, she needed a break. Her legs were tired and stretching them out on the grass provided her with a relaxing release as she lay in the grass. It smelled fresh, as if it had just been cut. Winry smiled as the grass beneath her comforted her. It didn’t take long for Winry to fall asleep, dreams filled her head with warm memories as she lay in the grass, smiling.

‘Hey... Hey missy? Hello?’ A light voice called out to her, breaking her sleep. Winry looked up at the sky, her tongue was dry and her eyes struggled to stay open as the light flooded her vision. A single, greenish, hand obscured the sun for her as she sat up. Winry sleepily thanked the hand as she turned her head, following the arm as it led her to a body. Winry’s heart began racing as she realized that the person who had been sitting next to her wasn’t a regular person
‘Don’t panic, I know what you’re thinking. But I’m harmless.’ The female Orc explained in an attempt to calm Winry down. Her look of panic had been obvious, even though she didn’t want it to be. Winry cleared her throat and shook her head softly.

No, I’m not afraid. I’ve just never met an Orc in person before.’ Winry half smiled as she looked at the girl sitting next to her. She had lime green skin and wore clothes made of a brown fur pelt. The Orc’s hair was tied back in a pony tail and her facial features, for an Orc, were quite feminine. This wasn’t how Winry pictured Orc’s at all.
‘Oh, that makes sense then, the girl smiled as Winry felt herself relaxing, and becoming more comfortable with this new person.

I’m Winry by the way. It’s nice to meet you.’ Winry smiled warmly as she extended her hand, the girl looked at Winry, puzzled for a moment, before taking her hand and shaking it. Winry felt herself questioning her new friend’s hesitation. But she wasn’t going to say anything about it.
‘I’m Rachel.’ Rachel replied as Winry gave her a confused look. Rachel laughed as Winry’s confusion amused her.
‘My mother was a big fan of humans, back in our original home, she had married a human man. Technically, I’m only half Orc.’ Rachel explained as a light bulb went off in Winry’s head.
Well, that explains her looks.’ Winry thought to herself as she grabbed the strap of her duffel bag and stood up slowly, her legs hadn’t quite woken up yet. As Winry stumbled onto her feet, Rachel followed her lead and stood up as well. Their size difference amazed Winry, Rachel had to be at least a foot and a half taller than her.

‘So, where are you headed?’ Rachel asked as Winry dusted the grass and dirt from her clothing.
The Nexus portal, I need to get to the Vasty Deep to help my friend.’ Winry replied, taking no notice of the Orc’s grins.
‘Is it... for a guy...?’ Rachel grinned, causing Winry to jolt her head up at her and glare with red cheeks.
AND IF IT IS!?’ Winry exclaimed as she balled her fists and held them at her side, leaning forward ever so slightly to emphasise her embarrassed and irritated mood. The Orc laughed as she gestured for winry to follow her.
‘Come on, you’re not far from it. I live in a village at the base of the hill the portal is on. I’ll take you there.’ Rachel smiled as Winry defiantly followed her. She didn’t want to admit it to anyone, but it was for Edward. Even if he hadn’t broken his Automail, she’d go anywhere for him. If he needed her to.

Winry took a large breath as she and her new friend came to a stop. The village that Rachel had spoken about. But something told Winry that there was a problem. It could have been the look on Rachel’s face as they came into view of her Village or, and this is probably more likely, it was the fire and smoke that rose from her home. The heat of the flames brushed up against them with the wind as Rachel broke into a sprint towards the Village. Winry followed her lead, if there were people that needed rescuing, then she’d be needed.

The smoke smelled of charcoal and fuel, the latter of the two was something that winry was roughly familiar with. However this fire had started, it wasn’t by any natural means. Winry dropped her bag on the gravel as she watched Rachel sprint into a house on the opposite end of the village. The intense heat of the flames almost drove Winry from the village, but she stood her ground.

What would Ed do?’ Winry thought to herself before realizing that he’d just use alchemy to create rain. Winry sighed as her next instinct was to run into the building next to her. She didn’t know why she felt so compelled to do such a thing, maybe it was because the thought of saving someone made her happy, or maybe she just wanted to help her new friend. Either way, she was going in. Winry turned to face the burning house, the crimson flames flickered and wailed as she mustered up the courage to sprint inside the house.

This is absolutely crazy…’ Winry sighed as she ran into the building. If not for the adrenaline coursing through her body, the flames would have stopped her from moving any further into the building.

The flames and heat made it hard for her to keep her eyes open, but she tried her best. Across from where she was standing was a collapsed wooden cross beam, it was lying on top of an Orc woman. She wasn’t moving, but she didn’t look dead. As winry slowly pushed forward, holding her hands in front of her face to keep the heat away from her eyes, she noticed that the woman was breathing. Winry rushed over to her and attempted to lift the beam off of her.

It’s no use, it’s too heavy for me.’ Winry grunted as panic shot through her body. She looked around at the flames, they were consuming the building at an alarming rate. Winry lightly tapped on the woman’s cheek, waking the Orc as she sat over her.

Don’t panic.’ Winry said as the woman looked up at her, her pain and desperation displaying itself in her eyes as she looked back at Winry.
I’m going to need you to help me lift this, okay?’ Winry continued, her words were quick but clear. She wanted to get out of this building before it collapsed on them both. Winry placed her hands on the underside of the beam and then began lifting. The Orc woman began pushing at the underside of the beam with her palms. Winry felt a wave of relief travel through her body as the two of them hoisted the wooden beam up and onto the ground.
That’s good, now come on.’ Winry smiled warmly as she helped the woman up and out of the burning house.
As Winry and the Orc she had just saved exited the building, they were greeted by a large, muscular, man. He was tall, and he was built like a weight lifter. He reminded her of Major Armstrong. He frightened winry a little bit, but she wasn’t going to back down from him.

I... I don’t want any trouble.’ Winry said as she looked up at his face, he was smiling at her, almost laughing.
Hurt you? I wouldn’t dare. But this Orc, maybe.’ The man replied as he separated the two. Winry didn’t know what to do, she didn’t understand why he was being so horrible to this village. But she had to act quick. Winry looked around to see a group of Orcs tied down and sitting in a large group. Rachel, who was now one of those Orcs, looked at Winry as tears fell from her eyes. Winry looked around frantically, noticing that her bag was only a few steps behind her.
‘He must have missed it’ Winry thought to herself as she quietly opened it. The man was too focused on subduing the group of Orcs that he didn’t notice Winry at all. Winry swiftly, but quietly, pulled her wrench from the bag and crept up behind the man.

HEY ASS HOLE!’ Winry exclaimed as she lodged her right foot between his legs and then pulled it away. The man cried in pain as he fell to his knees and began to turn to look at Winry. Without hesitation, winry slammed the Wrench she was holding into the side of his jaw, knocking him over and onto the ground. Her heart was racing, and even more adrenaline had begun flowing through her as she repeatedly beat the man across the head, only stopping to make sure he was unconscious.

Winry had felt relieved, her adrenaline high from kicking that guy in the balls was wearing off, and she was coming to terms with the situation she was in. Winry looked at the guy that she had just kicked, whom she had also mercilessly knocked unconscious. He was bound to wake up eventually, and when he did, he’d be angry. She knew what she had to do. Winry rushed over to Rachel and untied her, taking the rope she had just removed and began winding it around the guy’s hands.

Don’t just stand there, Untie the others, get the rope and help me tie this idiot up.’ Winry barked, shocking Rachel into action. After all, they only had a small window of time to get this guy tied up before he would regain consciousness and over power them again.

Winry had placed the man’s hands behind his back and tied them up, then she’d moved onto his legs and feet, wrapping his ankles first and then his thighs. She then took the rest of the rope, and wrapped it around his torso, tying it off with a not that would - hopefully - keep him from doing any further damage to this village. Hell, it already needed to be rebuilt from the ground up, there wasn’t much the man could do anymore. Short of slaughtering all of these innocent people, but Winry didn’t want to think about that. Winry kicked the man in the face as she stood up, a protest of disgust at the man’s ill intention. She didn’t understand why he did what he did, nor did she want to understand. She was just glad that she’d been able to stop him.

Come on, Help me sit him up against something.’ Rachel said as she walked over to Winry and began lifting the guy up. Winry looked around for a wall, most of them were burned down, but there was a half burned post close by that they could tie him to, she’d need to undo his ropes, but he was tied up pretty tightly. A few loosened ropes wouldn’t risk him getting free. Winry gestured for Rachel to head towards the post she had located. Together, they both started dragging him towards it and then proceeded to tie him to it.

There. That should do it. Now you can send word to the Authorities.’ Winry said as she dusted her hands off and placed them on her hips, Turning to Rachel. Rachel nodded as she pointed up to the hilltop by them.

Up there, in the rock formation is the gate to the Nexus. You can get to the Vasty Deep from there. Look for the Gate that is two palm trees.’ Rachel smiled as she lifted Winry’s bag from the ground and handed it to her. Winry took the bag, nodded and smiled as she headed up the hill. A new chapter to her journey in this new world awaited her atop this mountain. A new chapter in her life. Winry stopped for a second as her cheeks began to turn a shade of pink. Edward was also waiting… Waiting for her to arrive.
