Character history: (Spoilers for A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones follow.)
Daenerys was born as the youngest heir of King Aerys II Targaryen, the Mad King. She was birthed at Dragonstone during a great storm, hence her nickname, “Daenerys Stormborn.” Shortly after her birth, her father was unseated as King of the Seven Kingdoms by Robert Baratheon, and she and her older brother Viserys were smuggled to the free city of Braavos across the Narrow Sea, where they could grow up in safety.
The pair grew up in the free lands, with Viserys eventually claiming his right as the heir to the throne in Westeros and trying his best to procure an army to help him reclaim his birthright. Daenerys accompanied him on his journey; eventually, he married her off to Khal Drogo, a powerful warlord of the Dothraki people.
The arrangement would come in exchange for the Khal’s army of Dothraki soldiers, which Viserys hoped to use to conquer Westeros and regain his rightful place as Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. However, Viserys had grown into a petulant boy and an even worse leader, and as Dany matured in the Khal’s care, it became clear that her brother was not the born ruler he hoped he would be. Eventually, Viserys crossed Drogo one too many times, and Dany watched as her husband executed her brother for his insolence. Now the heir to the Targaryen name, Daenerys accepted her role as the rightful ruler of the Seven Kingdoms and began working to acquire an army and passage across the Narrow Sea.
Dany proved a much more effective ruler than Viserys ever had, easing into her position as the khaleesi of the Dothraki. However, Khal Drogo was mortally wounded in a battle and died of infection, leaving Dany lost without direction. She resigned herself to ruin, burning his body and stepping into the flames herself with three dragon eggs she had received as wedding presents, intending to kill herself. However, the flames did not harm her, and the next morning she arose very much alive with three hatched baby dragons.
Lost and poor, Dany and her close ally Ser Jorah Mormont set about to amass her army, beginning by offering to trade her most beloved dragon, Drogon, for an army of sellswords in Astapor. However, she breaks the deal, betraying the masters and setting the slaves of the city free. She goes on to free slaves in many other cities, including Yunkai and Meereen. As ruler, she struggles to bring peace to the city-states of Slaver’s Bay, but eventually succeeds, holding a tournament to celebrate. However, during this tourney, she narrowly misses an assassination attempt, riding her beloved pet, Drogon, out of the arena and into the wild countryside of Essos. She and Drogon fly out into the Great Grass Sea, where Dany is taken by Omni during her sleep.
