Character history:
Envy embodies the self-loathing jealousy that burdens the hearts of every man, woman, and child. His very existence is the product of his creator’s attempt to achieve perfection of mind, body, and soul by casting out the very “sins” he believed bounded the humans of his world to their mortality. This creature would come to be known simply as “Father”.
Father would find that to achieve his ultimate goal of “true” freedom from the confines of mortal existence, he would need to swallow the very thing that created the universe: a transdimensional being that labeled itself “Truth”. To do this, he would need the power of millions upon millions of human souls to harness enough power to become one with what he considered “god”.
Hence the creation of the country known as Amestris merely a few hundred years ago. He planned to build the country into a massive ritual circle known in their world as a “transmutation circle”. This circle would enable Father to consume the souls of the country’s populace, when the required circumstances came into fruition.
For these circumstances to be met, Father was in need of agents to ensure that these circumstances would be met, and that the populace would never be able to properly interfere with his plans.
Thus the homunculi were born.
Creatures born of the very essence of sin itself, their lives would be defined by the very traits their own creator had molded them from. The fourth of these would be known as the homunculus “Envy”.
As with every other Homunculus, Envy was created using a philosopher’s stone. An object forged from the essences of numerous mortal souls through one of the cruelest aspects of Alchemy. Envy in particular was created for the sole purpose of spreading distrust, chaos, and bloodshed across key points of the country in preparation for Father’s ritual using his key ability to shapeshift into nearly anything.
Of particular note, he was the key instrument in causing the Ishvalan Uprising in the east by disguising himself as an Amestrian officer, and shooting a child of Ishvalan descent.The genocide that would ensue would be a crucial component in Father’s plan, and only tightened the creature’s grip around the country. There came a point in which all seemed assured, when the Promise Day was nearly at hand, and all of Father’s “children” had placed each piece of the puzzle into its place perfectly.
He would prove to be quite useful in the proceeding years following the conflict, making sure to eliminate any who would prove potential disruptions in Father’s plan. One of these humans would be known as Maes Hughes, a man loved by many, but too smart for his own good. In discovering the countrywide transmutation circle, Maes would attempt to inform his comrade Roy Mustang of the danger, but would be killed by Envy himself (after transforming into the man’s wife, whom he had treasured alongside his daughter above all else).
This action would eventually prove to be a detrimental to Envy's welfare, being that Mustang would begin seeking revenge for his best friend’s murder, and would eventually discover it was Envy after the creature began to excessively gloat of how he committed the deed. For the ensuing torture inflicted upon Envy would echo throughout his very essence, and as he would find himself trembling in the darkness, fearing the vengeance of the very creature he looked down upon with such hatred, hiding behind the various cables lining the network of tunnels under the city of Central, he would find himself flung through time and space. He would find himself summoned into the Omniverse.
In this Omniverse, Envy finds himself with the inability to transform into his massive, hulking true form. He’s now stuck only being able to change into a life form close in height and length to that of an adult human, as if the world around him was bending his very being to its will. He has also found that his regenerative abilities have been greatly diminished, causing the Homunculus to have grown far more cautious when he chooses to take on his favorite form.
