Zone E -- Highlands
#21
He finally saw a resting point for the time being, he had hoped.

He had climbed and climbed until he grabbed a area and pulled himself up to the safehouse and opened the door.

He thought he was alone here. He heard cursing.

He sat outside the door and commed Redgrave and Gravwr.

“Made it to a safe area, I’ll find you guys soon.”

A sheer cliff blocked Odin’s path and presented him with two options. A grueling, possibly deadly, vertical climb over 100 yards or a long winding path through the valley and around the mountain. Could he make the climb? Probably. He had done worse and in ice no less, but he was no longer the god he used to be. And in any event, he wasn’t on much of a timer. There was still plenty of time before the next item delivery. Around it is then.

“Hah...” Clownpiece’s breath escaped in ragged gasps, every muscle in her body aching as she pulled herself up another foot or so. With a firm grasp on a jutting rock, she dragged herself another little bit up, burning up with the effort. She could see the lip of the cliff, hidden in the brown rock facing not more than a body length away. Only a little bit longer, and she’d drag herself onto solid ground and take a nap or something.

The stars and stripes of her dress scuffed and dirtied with every new handhold she found. Victory was finally in reach. Her right hand shot up, and her entire arm dug into the cliff face. With one last cry, she heaved herself up and over the ledge. Fortunately, no chill ran through her body. With all the effort she’d gone through to scale all these mountains, that would have been the greatest insult yet. But neither did sweat run down her brow. Despite the warm sun, the mountain air was still chilled with the altitude.

Clownpiece lifted her head up, coming face to face with a large, metal door carved right into the cliff face. Vaguely wondering where that had come from, she tiredly pushed herself off her feet, coming to a wobbly stand. The cool rock chilled her feet underneath the tights, and she took a step forward, followed by another, tentative step, and then another, until she reached the door. Closing a hand around the frigid handle, she pushed it open, stumbled in, and planted herself right onto the ground.

Odin warily made the final trek up the mountain to the safehouse. There would no doubt be those that used the space to ambush contestants traveling alone. It didn’t appear anyone was doing that yet though. He hadn’t picked up any items for them to steal from him anyways, so it would have been a poor strategy in this case.

Finally, he reached the entrance and pulled open the door. He saw that he wasn’t the first to arrive. “Greetings,” he smiled at the others already gathered.

With the city behind him and the mountains ahead the dark knight ventured into unknowns lands. The mountains that were clearly visible were an impressive sight to behold, but there was no time to enjoy the scenery. It had been a while since Bruce actually traveled by foot, At times like this he actually missed his iconic vehicle, the batmobile. With the engine in that monster he would've gotten him there in no time. Alas, he was bound by the restriction that is walking.

Suddenly he stopped, in front of hem was a camp, or at least it used to be a camp. The remnants of what use to be the camp were all but destroyed. These marks of destruction show that it happened some time ago.'

For a moment Bruce feared that there were primes in the area strong enough to actually cause this kind of damage to their surroundings. It was a scary thought, thinking there were more superhuman people out there that potentially had the same destructive powers as Clark. Especially when he didn't know who they were or what they were capable of. The prime started walking through the abandoned camp. Perhaps he was able to find something useful, something he would be able to use to his advantage.

Going through the debris he found nothing but ancient weaponry like swords, a broken arrow here and there but nothing noteworthy. During his scavenge he heard wolves howl in the distance. His previous encounter with wildlife wasn't a huge success, and this area seriously lacked the high vantage points he had back in the city. After he found what he was looking for it would be wise for him to return to the tall buildings. He looked behind him one more time before continuing his travel, he couldn't shake the feeling of someone following him. Besides the occasional camera drone from Karl there was nothing to see. Perhaps he was simply seeing things. He grabbed the annoying tablet and checked his course again, he was close, very close.

Odin looked out the window of the safehouse and compared what he saw to the map on his tablet. It appeared that the E2 location was down in the foothills to the north. It wasn’t far, but he didn’t want to miss out. He was already behind.

The All-Father waited until the other contestants were distracted and slipped out the door. He quickly made his way down the mountain and into the valley. It carried a higher risk of ambush but covered his movements better.

Be-Beep! Be-Beep!

Odin pulled out the tablet and reviewed the rules clarification that was flashing at him. Credit for pick-ups will be divided evenly between all team members.

Hopefully whoever showed up to the site would be open to a team up, even if just temporarily.

As Cirno heard the door open she saw Clownpiece enter causing her to scramble with slight pain to hug the hell fairy. "CLOWNPIECE! I WAS SO WORRIED!" Cirno then let go out of embarrassment to the enjoyment of Clownpiece. She pulled out her tablet and pulled up a Map of the island and sat over on a wooden table motioning over to Clownpiece. "I uh thought you were dead since you know us fairys are going to be some of the weaker competition

"Now Clownpiece we are about here I believe." She points to the south eastern seaboard and moves up towards the mid point where they were staying at. "Did you get a sack like this?" Cirno holds up her bag of goodies as she sees Clownpiece putting hers down on the table. Alright now Lets see what goodies you got from there."

Clownpiece pulled out a tablet and shook her head at it. "What is this thing? I have no clue what its suppose to be."

The ice fairy grabbed the tablet and turned it on causing Clownpiece's eyes to widen in confusion and intrest. "Now if I am correct this will have the same stuff mine has. To turn it on and off just press this button here" She pointed towards a indented area. "It is not water proof I think." Clownpiece tipped her head in confusion. "Just don't drop in water." She handed it back towards Clownpiece and then turned towards the person that opened the door. "Are you a friend or a foe?"  The person with a pretty great beard slowly closed the door and left to do who knows what else.

"Now where were we? Ah yes the plan because unless we work together we will lose I realized that when I was after a item drop. Now what is our next move? Should we head to area A,B,C, or D? Because I got a feeling that most people will be after the items." She handed the table to Clownpiece for her to decide.

The hell fairy looked at Cirno funny. "Isn't this a competition where we are suppose to fight to win? So why help me?" Cirno sighed as she tapped the table where they were at. "I wanted to help you because we will lose individualy. We need to work together is my reason and your my friend." She pulled out the selfie stick and her face contorted into one of anger. "What is this joke Karl? A freaking selfie stick?!" She went to snap the item in two since it was of poor quality and she would have more use with having a sharp object than a blunt one

Odin was startled by a low growl to his left. He quickly spun in that direction and raised his spear in a defensive stance. A grizzly bear reared up to eight feet tall and roared at him, spittle hitting the god in the face. It had come up out of a den just off the path and behind some bushes. Odin shuffled backward, keeping his stance steady and his spear out of the reach of its massive claws. One swipe could probably pull it out of his hands, and he needed to set it if the thing charged.

Just then, two small cubs came out of the bush behind their mother.

“Aye, Momma Bear. I see what your about. How about we just go our separate ways?” said Odin as much to himself as to the bear. He didn’t speak bear, after all. Momma Bear fell back down to all fours, shaking the earth, and delicately pushed her cubs back into the bushes with the same paws that could take a head off. She did not let Odin out of her gaze as she did so.

For the All-Father’s part, he just kept backing away. It was unlikely that she would follow him, but it was never a good idea to turn your back on a wild animal that was bigger than you. Eventually, the family returned to the hole in the ground, and the god turned away from them. “Good-bye Momma Bear. You chose a poor place to make a den. There will be plenty of trouble to walk these paths in the next few days.”

One’s first step into the Abyss was often quite a doozy and Strazio’s was no exception. Cold wrapped around him, prodding at his flesh with knobby fingers. Each breath fell just short of filling his lungs, the air too thin for comfort.

“Just great,” he muttered.

Syntech had placed him atop a fucking mountain. Not just any mountain mind you, but the tallest damned mountain in existence. Well, maybe that was hyperbole, but in Strazio’s mind it was pretty close to accurate. A gust of wind buffeted his face with snow. He cussed and pulled his cloak tight. The gust was short-lived and when the whirlwind died down the island opened up before him. For a long moment he stood there and gathered his bearings, mentally forming a rough map of the surrounding area.

Strazio shivered. Time to go.

Though he imagined that climbing the mountain was more difficult than descending, it was still a bitch eitherway. The thin air forced him to stop and catch his breath every so often and the cold made his body sluggish. After about an hour, or what felt like an hour, he passed the snowcapped threshold and reached then crag-covered midsection. Once out of the cold he stopped to chew on a protein bar and catch his breath. There was something serene about the first few hours on the island. A sort of peaceful tranquilty before the unrepetent bloodshed.

He fingered the metal collar around his neck. A small spark traveled across his fingertips and he smiled. Magick still echoed in his heart and for that he was grateful. Memories of the knockdown drag-out fights of his last Abyss sent a small shot of adrenaline through his veins. While there was somethjng to be said for a good old-fashioned fistfight he felt a lot less vulnerable with his magick intact.

I hate mountains. It just feels like so much unnecessary effort to trudge up steep hills.
No, we can work this. The terrain, combined with the greenery, allows us to stay hidden much more easily. Still, I'm rather fond of staying invisible right now.
I just want to fight someone already.
No. You don't. Shut up. I'm not using your persona for this. If we don't think and act rationally then we will lose.
We'll lose anyway. At least if we start fighting we'll go out in a blaze of glory and be remembered, rather than only being noticed as the wimp who hid in the corner.
In case you haven't noticed, despite having access to the same body and thoughts of all of us, we are heading towards an item drop right now.
A place we're planning to observe, because you're too scared of going in there to fight.
No. I'm not scared. I just think it's smarter to watch and join the fray should the opportunity arise. We will choose our fights and not have them chosen for us, and by doing that we shall at least achieve a reasonable placement.

I ran up the side of the mountain, occasionally kicking and jumping off trees just because I could. Even if it alerted someone to my presence, my erratic path around the overgrown hill would make it hard to physically locate me. The "collar" around my arm didn't throw off my balance as much as I thought it would, so was considerably better than having it tight around my next. I shuddered at the thought. It's just something about my neck being touched that makes me feel strangled. Even if I know otherwise. Which is dumb. Still, I don't see a reason to fight my own body's intuition, even if this thing can probably kill me regardless of where it's placed.

While Zone E consisted primarily of staggering mountains, the north side composed only foothills, with the scattered remnants of some sort of camp. There was no doubt that the care package would be dropped here, and Dante would be damned if he couldn't get his hands on it. The stakes were ever higher now that Redgrave had made himself a focus, and he intended to put on a good show like he promised.

Jogging over the crests of hills, he navigated through the sullen remnants of the camp. No graves, no signs of life, just the aftermath of a battle, seemingly frozen in time. Despite the weathering, much of the lost equipment and ruined buildings had not eroded away entirely, leaving some aspects of the crime scenes intact. Yet much of the incident that must've ensued was left to interpretation, with no proper indication of who - or what - would do such a thing to this place.

He didn't dwell on it. What counted above all else was that the perpetrator wasn't here anymore.

But someone else definitely was here now. Ducking behind a solid wall of a crumbled cabin, Dante peered around the corner to observe the other person. Black cowl, mask with pointed ears, modern-looking composite armor... oh goodness, was this a vigilante, or just a mentally unstable moron? Hopefully just one or the other and not both, god forbid.

The devil hunter checked everything in his arsenal real quick- gauntlets, handguns, sword, shotgun. He couldn't be sure how much he was need, but better to have everything handy, just in case. Mr. Tall-Dark-&-Brooding was the only Prime that could be seen at the moment, but that didn't account for however many Primes were currently unseen. And chances were that people would be swarming in real fast just for a shot at getting their hands on the prize.

This might just turn into a battle royale, and Dante wasn't sure if he liked the prospect. He didn't quite have the capability to be that much of an opportunist.

Strazio made his way down the serpent-like paths of the mountain. Scrub brush and twisted trees defied death and staked their claim into the cliff face. The mage admired their tenacity. For a few sections he had to climb down almost vertical stretches of rock. His hands felt like sandpaper and his white cloak was stained brown from rockdust. After a few hours he reached the grass-covered skirt of the mountain. Birds chirped happily oblivious to the bloodsport around them. He took a break and ate another protein bar, whistling a tune to the birds in between bites.

As he continued deeper into the forest he caught sight of tracks. Large footfalls surrounded by a set of larger paws. Paws the size of dinner plates. Paws that reminded Strazio of a familiar beast. Cold water filled his chest and he dropped into a crouch. Something rustled nearby. A set of shiny black eyes peered out from behind a bush, followed by an adorable fuzz-covered head. A cub sniffed the ground and pointed its curious muzzle at the white-haired boy. Strazio exhaled and smiled at the creature. He stood and stepped towards the beast.

Momma bear, hidden in a thicket roared and charged towards the interloper. Strazio’s heart stopped and his eyes grew wide as the several hundred pound mammoth rushed him. There was no time to think. Strazio threw his palms out towards the approaching grizzly and closed his eyes. Twin shotgun-style blasts of energy erupted from his hands. Deadcenter, both bursts crashed against the bear’s frame and sent it sprawling. Furled by primal fight-or-flight the mage fired a few more blasts at the fallen creature, annihilating it. The cub cried out and ran towards its dead mother.

“Goddamnit,” Strazio muttered and turned away, “now I feel like an asshole.”

He shook his head and continued his journey. Blood had been spilt and it would be spilled again, what a shame. The white-haired mage followed the human-made tracks, hoping to get the drop on someone. And his hope was made manifest as he caught sight of an aged warrior trundling forth.

“Hey!” Strazio shouted.

The man turned to face him, “greetings.”

Sparks flickered across Strazio’s body and his muscles tensed. He unshouldered his pack and rifle and took a step forward.

“I’m not one for pleasentries,” he said, “let’s just skip to the part where I bash your skull in.”

I walked over the lower foothills, staying in the gaps between them. Being higher up would mean being more visible, even if I was literally invisible right now, there was no need to take chances. I might not be planning to compete for this item drop, but watching other people fight over it could give me some insight on how that stuff went in both Dante's Abyss and the Omniverse in general. If anything, the Omniverse was so far out of my old reality, it might as well have been fiction.

I skirted the edge of the drop zone for a short while, hidden under the guise of my stealth spell. Once I entered the area, my plan was to stay hidden and gun for the tall tree on one of the hills. I could hide up there in the shade and it should be able to give me a reasonably good view. But, that brought up the point of whether there were other people doing the same. I had no sensing abilities, so should anyone else be able to replicate my stealth (which wasn't unlikely) I'd never know.

Currently, the only person I could see was wearing a dark black set of gear. Just brooding about the abandoned camps and trekking about the area. It was exceedingly unlikely that he wasn't here for the prize. I made a few glances over at what I thought were alternative hiding spots ad studied them from the distance. If only the pack came with a spyglass, binoculars, or a small telescope. The areas were mostly too shrouded by shade, but I concluded my tree spot was better and there was unlikely to be anyone there so I made a run for it, trying to stay low and hidden.

Just hearing the one word greeting, Odin could tell the other Prime was looking for a fight. “Greetings,” he replied, turning and sizing up his foe. He was younger than the god, for sure, but had the confidence of a veteran warrior. Unbridled rage danced behind the man’s eyes.

The short challenge left little room for Odin to maneuver. “If that is the way it must be, then I accept your challenge,” the All-Father sighed, tossing his bag of equipment to the side of the path and taking a defensive stance. “I think you will find that I am not the easy target you take me for, however.”

Sergeant John Estes glanced around the dense foliage that made up the mountain and valley from which he stood. Behind him, to the north and west the burly police officer could see nothing but more trees and more hills he had no strong desire to climb.

“Imperial Intelligence says some criminal has entered the games, but I sure as hell ain’t gonna find him in that mess. Digging some crook out of all those woods would be like finding a needle in a haystack,” Mad Bull muttered to himself.

The cop looked to the south, smelling the scents of the sea blown over on a hot summer breeze.  From his vantage point high atop a mountain cliff, he could see beyond the valley, over the forest and in the distance spied a roofed building with attached outdoor swimming pools.

Mad Bull snapped his fingers in exuberance. “Hey now! That’s more my style…”

He gazed at the far flung building that seemed like a doll’s house at such a distance and considered the trek for moment. The way down through the valley and through the trees didn’t seem so treacherous, but the seasoned law officer thought that it stood to reason that such a building would attract other dangerous folk looking for a respite on a day like today.  He mulled it over in his mind.  On one hand, he was under orders to figure out which criminal the Imperials were targeting, then track them down.  The resort was sure to hold better promise than a forest, but on the other hand, that meant he’d be risking his neck.

“Booze…” he suddenly realized with satisfaction. “A place like that, even if abandoned, has got to still have some booze lying around.”

Hmm. Still just the guy in black. Could we scout around a bit more?
And leave the spot we just snagged, risk being seen, and take the chance you said we shouldn't take?
Shut it you two. Just make a decision.
No. We've got half an hour or so. Maybe a bit less. We can fight this out.
Do you ever stop and think that we're going crazy, talking to ourself and all that?
No. Because we're just thinking. It's not like we actually have a proper split personality or anything. This is just faked as a way for us to make better decisions and consider more viewpoints.
You know what? Sure. Let's scout and stay hidden. If it's just the bat guy, we could take him.
Actually, I was thinking of teaming with the guy. Or, better yet, snagging the drop from under his nose.
I don't think we could manage that, he, and everyone else, would see it falling.
Anyway, we can worry about that later. For now, I want to see who else is out and about.

I left my tree carefully. The bat guy - his black suit with the triangular points on the side of the helmet made him look like a bat. Sort of. At least in my somewhat weird thought process, anyway. I prowled around, looping around the area. Learning it. Still just the bat guy. I tried to keep him in my sight, or within a line of vision. I wanted to form a good mind map of the area, people included. I flinched a few times when he looked in my direction, before remembering he couldn't see me.

Hidden behind one of the hills, also milling about the camp, was another person. If I was more thorough before, I would have noticed the glaring blind spot. I kicked myself internally over it. Still, I could see both Bats and, whatever that other guy was - he had white hair, but didn't look old, so was it dyed? Eh, I decided to just call him Red for now after the colour of his clothes.

I was almost directly between the two of them now. Both were at other ends of the camp. I considered that if I could draw their attention to this spot, they might get distracted fighting each other creating the perfect opening for me to grab the prize. But sadly, my magic arsenal didn't have that level of spells. I could create fake sparks and fire, and the noise of a click.

I smiled to myself, thinking of a plan.

Let's set fire to that wooden shack... or what's left of it anyway. It's probably flammable enough.
Starting fires is always fun, but let's just get out quick and observe the two.

Getting out my flint and steel, I knelt down, still fully concealed, and tried to get some sparks to ignite the wood. When my efforts went to nothing, I then cut and scraped some small shavings off the logs, which lit much more easily. It was warm, not very windy, and dry. The fire would probably spread.

I put the flint and steel back into my back and quietly walked away, keeping a close eye on Bats and Red. My old spot wouldn't work for this, so I crouched down in a small dip in the ground about a hundred metres away, taking a quick swig of my waterskin.

Quote:TL;DR: Dane is still trying to stay invisible (Stealth, Suppression, 5 TEC). He set a fire in the camp in the hopes Batman and Dante would move towards it, notice, and then fight each other. He's now hiding and watching trying to keep both of them in his line of sight while waiting for the drop. Dane doesn't plan to go the the drop unless he's alone in doing so. Still at E2.

“Woah hold on!” Clownpiece shot her arm out, stopping Cirno before she could break the ‘selfie stick’ over her knee. “I don’t know what it’s for, but if it’s in our bags, I think it should remain in one piece.” A frown crossed the ice fairy’s face, but she handed the rod back to her friend anyway. She quickly scanned over it again as it entered her hands, turning it over a few times. What was this for anyway? Reaching things from high places? Smacking people from a distance? Perhaps she could tie a pointy rock to it and throw together a makeshift spear.

Shrugging, she retracted the rod and threw it back into the bag with everything else. She picked up the tablet again, eyes narrowing as she brought it up to her face to get a closer look. With the basic functions that Cirno showed her, the hell fairy had no doubt that this was definitely going to be useful somehow. Though whether she wanted to spend the time now to learn it was another matter entirely. There was things to do and places to be, so maybe it was best to be on their way.

“Alright!” Clownpiece pushed up to her feet, shoving the metal square back into her bag. “Let’s get going,” she said, slinging the pack over her shoulder as she turned to her friend, offering her a hand.

“Where to?” Cirno asked, her frigid fingers closing around the offered hand.

“I know a place without mountains we can head to!” The star and striped fairy answered, a small bit of strain entering her voice as she pulled her friend to her feet. “I think we’ll probably be more likely to find things on flat ground than in here.”

“Plus it’ll be a lot easier to walk,” Cirno said, eyes glowing as she imagined what it would feel like to finally walk on flat ground. “Lead the way!”

“Let’s go!” Clownpiece cheered, stepping towards the entrance and enthusiastically flinging the door open.

As Cirno walked with Clownpiece in the front across the highlands she had one purpose in mind and that was to get to solid and flat ground. "It will be great once were on flat ground I can finally  run at full speed and maybe find the items faster." Clownpiece nodded in glee as she enjoyed the idea of being on flat land also.

"So if we are fighting someone you want me to take the brunt of the damage?" Clownpiece looked at her and slowly nodded. "You were always a more aggressive and energetic fairy." As Cirno looked at the tablet she saw they were nearing the next subsection and had suprizingly made great time. "One more subsection to go and we will be there Clownpiece." Of course Clownpiece had little to  no idea what the ice fairy was talking about so it made for little to no sense to talk about sections and subsections.

Once again they climbed another hill though she could faintly see that they were getting less and less steep and tall compared to the others. She could also see that there was once they reached the top of the hill a large amount of patches of trees in the distance. "This is where were going Clownpiece?" She nodded at Cirno inquiry.

Now while they went down the same hill they could tell just by passing through the item drop area; that it would possible cause them to have to fight so each fairy went through there own set of calming and readying mechanisms. Cirno on one hand was already stoaked to fight some people with out Danmaku rules. She could finally roll some humans heads. Clownpiece just twirled her torch around in an impressive manner that most people could not do.

As Cirno looked at her table once more before putting it away she saw a message from Karl to the primes. "The closest item drop to you Cirno is in E2. Good luck and remember to win you have to collect items. That was when she entered the next subsection.

“Hah... Finally...” For the umpteenth time this day, Clownpiece found herself gasping for air, her ordeal through the mountain wreaking havoc on her muscles and her lungs. If it weren’t for the fact that she knew she wouldn’t get back up after falling, she would have thrown herself into the mountain grass and taken in the sweet, sweet scent of it. Finally, no more cliff faces to scale, to more falling rocks to worry about. Only the gentle rolling of hill and dale.

“We’re... out...” From just behind and to her right, the voice of the hell fairy’s companion panted out agreements. The hellish mountains were finally behind them. Now they just needed to keep walking. Surely there were plains somewhere out there.

“Hey... Cirno, I got an... idea,” barely mustering up the breath necessary to talk, Clownpiece called out to her friend.

“Yeah?” Came a similarly tired response, though despite the labored breaths from either of them, they kept pace somehow. Without further word, the star-spangled girl unslung the pack from her shoulder, releasing the latch and flinging it open, revealing an ominous purple glow from within. She reached in uncomfortably, the act of walking and rustling through it proving rather difficult. First her hand closed around a lump of fabric, and she pulled out her silly, purple and white spotted jester cap, before affixing it rather haphazardly to her head. Her hands fell back in, rummaging through it again and grabbing hold of a familiar, wooden rod. Her torch.

“Look over here,” she said, spinning on her heel and trying not to trip as she walked backwards over the uneven ground.

“Wha-” The ice fairy’s question cut off halfway through as her eyes suddenly glowed with in a menacing red tone, affixed to the purple glow waving in front of her. Instantly, the fairy straightened up, her relaxed demeanor fixing itself as she was suddenly raging with energy. “Yeah!” she pumped her fist into the air. “What is this energy!?” Her pace picked up.

“The wonderful power of insanity,” Clownpiece responded, closing her eyes and crossing her arms as a smug smile crossed her face.
“I feel like I can take on the world!” An enthusiastic cry rose up from Cirno’s lips.

“In this state you ca-WOAH,” her sentence cut off mid-thought, as her chilly friend raced forward, slung her over her shoulder, and charged down the foothills.
