Weiss scratched at her shoulder impatiently, trying to ignore the cold. Or rather, trying to ignore the fact she couldn’t feel it in the slightest.
Cold is something only humans get to feel, I guess.
The thought made Weiss frown, as she sat in the distant outpost of Dwarfenton. The cold winds blowing sheets of ice through the small town should have been enough to force even her to put on a thick coat. Instead, she was just a little cold. The walk here, without Nayamasa’s nagging, had made her appreciate just how much she actually appreciated his presence. Being angry or frustrated with his constant insults or nagging was preferable to being left alone to think about what was going on.
Her skin felt unnaturally smooth. Her body seemed to be consistently at the temperature of “just slightly too cold.”, eating normal food didn’t really do anything to sate her, even though she still tried to do it, and her ability to smell things had gotten a lot keener.
What was worse than what happened in her body, though, was the low, persistent buzzing in her mind. It intensified the more people she was close to, and receded only when she was alone, in a quiet place. It was too primal to be called hunger, but Weiss didn’t know what else to call it, and the fact she couldn’t get it to just shut up had her undecided on whether to tear her hair out or just cry.
“I’m a human being.” She mumbled to herself. “I’m still a human being-”
"Um, excuse me?”
“What!” Weiss snapped, looking up to see a diminutive guy in a labcoat. The short guy jumped at her voice, and Weiss’s face softened.
“Sorry. I-”
“N-no, it’s no problem at all. I was just wondering… are you Weiss Schnee?” The man asked quizzically.
“Yes. Are you my contact, here? What’s your name?”
“Oh, my name’s M-m-m-m-marty.”
Weiss took a deep breath, trying to calm down. It wasn’t Regal or his assistants fault that she was in this situation. “Hi, Marty. I… already got a briefing from Nayamasa, but I was told I needed to pick something up from you?”
“Oh, yeah.” the scientist said with a straight nod, digging into his fanny pack for about a minute longer than Weiss would have liked. “I was sent to bring you this.” he stated finally, pulling out a small, blue gauntlet.. “It’ll help you find the nebula spaces. It’s really simple…” The man continued, before going into a long, complicated explanation, clipping the gauntlet to Weiss’s arm without really waiting for permission. Weiss would have liked to have glared at the man - no, given the squeakiness in his voice, Weiss was becoming convinced this person had to be younger than her - but she was just busy trying to follow all the long complicated speech she got about exactly how to get the gauntlet to work.
In the end, she managed to understand “Push this button to activate the radar”, and decided to call that enough of a victory and hope she didn’t need to do anything else with the stupid thing.
“And then if you just use lines 3 and 5-”
“Yes, thank you, Marty.” She snapped, turning on the radar. She didn’t want to snap at the excited guy, and she knew he was trying to help, but my god was this guy annoying. The irritated huntress activated her radar with a couple taps, thinking that it was a good excuse to get away from this conversation as fast as possible. As soon as she tapped the screen, a fairly simple GPS-like map appeared, with a single, blinking yellow dot.
Weiss looked towards the mountains in the distance. “So I suppose the Nebula gate’s in that direction somewhere, huh?”
As though in answer, a sheet of snow and ice seemed to fall from the tall spire of rock.
“...I… better get going.”
