Colosseum Tournament Round 2
#1
Bracket: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://challonge.com/CamelotColosseum">http://challonge.com/CamelotColosseum</a><!-- m -->

Betting: <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://omniverse-rpg.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=4163">viewtopic.php?f=28&t=4163</a><!-- l --> (closes once the first rp of Round 2 is posted by a competitor)

The Tournament takes place at the Camelot Colosseum, a massive Ancient-world stadium not unlike the Roman Colosseum at its zenith, albeit with some more ‘modern’ amenities, like places selling Camelot cuisine and trinkets not unlike the souvenirs you would find at a baseball park or football stadium.

Given the scale of the Colosseum, eight matches will take place simultaneously. The floor/arena portion of the Colosseum is 300 feet long by 200 feet wide. So each fight zone for this and round two will be about 40 feet wide and 200 feet across.

During the entire duration of the tournament, the audience will be protected by an invisible magic shield. This same shield is used to divide up the interior of the Colosseum into eight portions to prevent fights from spilling out or interrupting anyone. This barrier has a ceiling at seventy five feet.

New – All armory weapons and all environmental weapons count as Moves for the sake of avoiding the ‘Well that’s not a Move, so it doesn’t work as well against me!’ line of argument. A sword or a blaster gun from the armory functions on the same level as if it was a Move that prime had.

New – For this round only (ONCE AGAIN --- FOR ONLY THIS ROUND), Flight is limited to levitating roughly five feet above a solid surface. Super Jumping remains unchanged.

Battleground Description

‘The Battle of Coruscant’

Celebrate the great humbling of the foul Empire!

For this battle, the usual floor of the Colosseum has been replaced with a fifteen-foot layer of toxic, polluting chemicals, not unlike those that blanket all of Coruscant. Exposure to these magic toxins will immediately cause the prime to develop a fever that quickly leads to boils, nausea, and lightheadedness. Even after leaving the chemicals, these effects linger. As these effects are Camlot magic, there is no work-around, regardless of whatever reason or loophole you try to create. The area at the bottom of the battle zone is littered with broken ships, so there are weapons to be salvaged if you wind up down there.

The action takes place on a series of elevated steel platforms that float twenty to thirty feet over the foul toxins below. These platforms vary in size, shape, and elevation. A few have little shacks or steel barricades on them. There are hooks beneath most of the platforms and a few of them have little springs on them to launch primes around.

There are also four turrets dispersed amongst the elevated platforms. These can be manned by primes and cannot be destroyed by them. Two of these are Coruscant-origin (so they look like turrets from a Star Wars capital ship). The other two are demonic and fire streams of hellfire.

On one side of the battle zone stands the standard of Diablo’s army. Beneath the standard lies a hellish armory of daemonic blades, guns, and other assorted bits and baubles stands. On the other end of the zone is the foul colors of the Empire and an armory filled with their various weapons, both long-, short-, and melee-range. Both armories also have a large (ie – even stronger) turret.

Twenty feet above the platforms are two TIE fighter ships that are frozen in place. They seem impervious to damage, but once manned, these can be operated by a prime. While their lasers pack a punch, the plating on them is purposefully frail once they are operated. Be careful.

OOC Stuff

Purchases - Moves and other stuff may be purchased between fights. If you buy something during a fight, you may not use it during that fight.

The following are the rules for the first round of the tournament:

Judge Template

Quote:"Description and Clarity:
This section covers how effectively the writer created the world around the reader. Making sure that the reader can understand what is being described, using vivid or appropriate descriptions of items, events and people in the story and having good word choice all go into this section of the review. Note that using “purple prose” is not always effective, nor is consistently using flat, dry description. A writer that gets a good score in this section draws the reader into the world and allows them to see through the eyes of the character/narrator.

Voice:
No two writers write in the same style, nor should they. Even individual stories call for individual writing styles, a mood that creates a tinted lens through which the story is viewed. This is traditionally called the “voice” of the writer and it is a very important part of writing. A writer with a high score in this considers tone, pacing and including/disincluding detail throughout the entire story.

Character:
Character development, the actions and motivation of characters and dialogue are all important in this section. The goal is to create “round” characters as opposed to “flat” ones. Making the people in your writing seem real, not just archetypes following a plot progression is the goal here. The writer should consider who the people they are writing as are as individuals, why they take certain actions, their personal problems and boons, how they interact with the world around themselves and how they approach problems are all considerations for a writer in this section. Note that not all GOOD characters are LIKABLE characters. If you really hate a character that’s well written, this section deserves a good score!

Story:
Every body of creative writing, no matter how short or long, follows a storyline. How well the themes, events, messages and twists grab the reader is what makes the difference between a decent story and a great story. The writer must capture the reader’s attention hold it with the actions of characters and the world around them. This isn’t to say that a writing must be packed with action or intrigue, even something as simple as eating breakfast can be made into a great story. The presentation of events and how those events tie into the writer’s voice is what makes it good reading.

Grammar and Spelling:
This is the clerical work of the body of work. Spelling, punctuation, grammar and anything else that can be considered technical goes into this section. Generally every major grammatical error per 500 words moves this section down one grade."

"1: There is room for improvement. Generally the reviewer should highlight how the writer could improve this area as well as direct them to outside sources that can give more help.

2: This section was about average. The writer has room for improvement but about par with the rest of the site’s writing ability. Reviewer should highlight areas to improve and site specific errors or weak spots.

3: This section is above average. The writer has shown a competency higher than the average writer on the site, but can still notably improve. The reviewer can be vague with their ideas for improvement but still include specific details and weak spots.

4: This section was fantastic! The writer took the reins and really took the reader on a journey. Few errors or room for improvement can be found by the reviewer but anything that the reviewer feels could be cleaned up should be noted.

5: This section is one of the best the reviewer has ever seen. This level of writing is on par with professionals with very few errors and the reviewer should have a hard time finding room to improve. This grade should be handed out rarely, and only to the very best writing!"

Of key importance - There are two NEW things.

Also read the battle zone description. It actually kind of matters this time around (or at least... this time around, it is smack dab in your face, influencing your writing and so forth).

So, Guu has just entered the area as a spectator: <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://omniverse-rpg.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=4219&p=47950#p47950">viewtopic.php?f=17&t=4219&p=47950#p47950</a><!-- l -->

She intentionally made her entrance ridiculous to attract the attention of the people she's looking for, so some attendees will be talking about her. If you want your character to learn about Guu, then you have an opportunity between rounds to hear about her by word of mouth.

@Proto: I know it's your call, but can I get you to go first in out match?

Edit- If not it's cool, I just have a lot on my plate at the moment.

Yo Mami, I'm just going off of the canon for your character because your Roster is like... no information. If I get something wrong, sorry, but I mean, there's not a lot to go on.

Took a little detour to give Yu a little talk. Have fun calling Molly. Guu should be back with you two by the time your call is finished.

(Dante's alt speaking btw)

I should probably mention, since it wasn't clear at all, that Dante is signed up for the tournament under the alias Tony Redgrave.
Quote:...but Dante was already writing his name. As she stopped, so did he, and after a moment of actual consideration, scratched out the four letters he had written to register as something else. A moment longer, and beside a scribbled-out patch of ink sat the scratchy cursive signature of 'Tony Redgrave'.
Why? Just for the sake of a more 'normal' name, and so he can keep his actual identity under wraps. (Though also, OOC, I also don't want there to be any in-character confusion between the character and Dante's Abyss... yet.) I'm not saying anything needs to be changed, I'm just mentioning this so that no character accidentally gets information they technically shouldn't know.

Yo Mami, not a big deal or anything in your post, but BWNN had her arm cut off last round and actually replaced it with Gildarts'. Permanently. Like, she has a metal arm now in place of her other arm. It sorta felt like you thought she was still using it like a club (unless she like, ripped it off and discarded it?)

Again, no big deal, just for future posts! Big Grin

I'm gonna be dealing with Wedding shit for a lot of tomorrow and likely most of Sunday. I'll see what can be done for posting.

Bandit With No Name Wrote:BWNN had her arm cut off last round and actually replaced it with Gildarts'. Permanently.
Not that this really has anything to do with the tournament, but when you say 'permanently', how permanently are you meaning? Like, if she dies at some point in the tournament, will she still have it when she respawns in the Nexus?

Because that seems like a seriously awesome way of going about your character development.

Thank you for the heads up. It's going to be a busy week for me at work, so it might take me until closer to the end of the work week to grade you guys (that's only because I like to be able to sit down and focus on it so I can give you guys the attention you both deserve).
