The Search Begins
#1
"I expected the nexus portal to.... Sting, or something, I guess." Weiss thought to herself, taking one long look back at the gate she'd came from, before surveying her surroundings. She'd picked the gate, more or less, at random. "Because that's how I'm going to find them. Walking in whatever random direction suits my fancy." Weiss thought bitterly.

Weiss took a few experimental steps forward, a soft puff of dust accompanying her footsteps. If she'd been a little younger or a little happier, she'd probably find this breathtaking, she reflected. She'd never been in a place so open in all her life: Remnant was mainly covered with vast forests and cluttered cities. This place, on the other hand, seemed to have less trees than she could count on one hand. Instead, the wind blew across fields of grass larger than Weiss had seen in her life. Weiss realized this was the first time in her life she'd ever been able to look in one direction and see nothing but an open expanse all the way to the horizon. The pure beauty of the nature around her should have taken her breath away.

In a sense, it did. Just how big was this world? How many places could Ruby be? And this was just one gate. What if they all contained different places? The realization made Weiss struggle to hold back tears. How many more months was the scope of what she was searching through.

Weiss took a deep breath to steady herself. She'd made a decision. Even if every step was an ordeal, she would take it. "...I won't give up." Weiss said softly. "Because if it was the other way around... You wouldn't either. Right?" Weiss said to herself. Somehow, someway, she found the energy. the ability to put each step forward. "You'd just keep walking... And stay positive..." Weiss continued, each word coming out in an increasingly halting tone. "And just look at it as another adventure. Because it was impossible for you to stay down for very long."
Weiss's stride slowed with every sentence.
"...I miss you."
Weiss took a deep breath, as she forced her tears back. She'd been missing her partner for six months now. That wound was already red when Omni decided to add a few extra, just for kicks. Like a nasty kick in the gut.

That was fine with her. If he wanted to play games like this, she'd gladly find him and punch him in his stupid smiling face till he told her where they were. And how to reach them. Omnipotent or not, Weiss didn't care at this point. It's not like she really had anything to lose.

"No. You have the chance to find Ruby to lose. Maybe even Blake and Yang. Don't forget that." She thought to herself reluctantly. She wasn't able to just work off raw emotion like Yang. She didn't possess the ability to willfully drown out common sense like that. For the first time Weiss found herself envying that trait.
So now the only choice was to keep walking down this dusty road, hope that eventually some sort of feature would-
Amidst the grass and the wind surrounding her, a flash of bone-white porcelain appeared, and Weiss instinctively jumped back, Myrtenaster's dustchamber already spinning in hand. Grimm! Was she an idiot? Even here, there would probably be grimm in the wild. She-

"Excuse me, miss, would you like to buy a mask?" a soft, male voice echoed.

Grimm didn't talk... Weiss took a breath and focused her eyes properly. What she'd thought was a Grimm was just.. A mask on a backpack. Though as far as grimm masks go, it was probably the most realistic Ursa she'd ever seen. It was also the largest backpack, twice the size of the purple-garbed merchant who bore it on his back.

"Oh, my... Might I say, miss, your face is most... Unique. Have you ever thought of modeling for a mask. I could pay you in Omnilium." The small man said. The broad smile the man bore felt less genuine with his eyes so closed, but he seemed harmless enough.

"Umm, no thanks, I'm actually... Looking... For someone..." Weiss said with a nervous tone. What kind of creep just asks to make a mask of your face? "She's about 5'2, dark red hair, petite.. Probably hugging a collapsible Scythe..." Weiss asked, figuring it was worth a shot. Though she didn't know if she actually liked the idea of Ruby meeting this creep.
The man merely rubbed his hands together. "Ahh... I'm afraid it's a shame... I haven't seen her, I'm afraid. Though I haven't been everywhere here, yet. I'm just a travelling mask salesman. I am sorry you didn't find my offer enticing, but... I'll always be willing to do it later if you reconsider, when you're not so pressed for time. Or, if you wish, I could always sell you a mask. for you see, I am the-"
Weiss simply shook her head. "uhh... no, no, that's... Not necessary. I'm sorry." Weiss said with slightly raised eyebrows. "but if you haven't seen her, I'm afraid I have to-"

"You are a prime, are you not?" The man interrupted her.
"I... what?" Weiss asked
"A prime. You have the feel of someone new to this world. A prime is one summoned here by Omni, personally."
Weiss raised her eyebrow at that.
"I... Guess I am."
The man chuckled, and Weiss couldn't help but tighten her grip on Myrtenaster. It was not a natural laugh.
"If the one you're looking for is also a prime, you could always enter the tournament." The man said with a smile. "I plan to go there soon myself, after recruiting some happiness salesman to help me work with the crowd."
Happiness salesman? Okay... Weiss wanted to just end this increasingly weird conversation, but this WAS her only resort in finding out more about the world.
"The tournament? What does that have to do with finding someone?"

The man's smile was omnipresent as ever, and Weiss kept finding herself more and more uncomfortable staring at it as he took his time before answering. "Ahh, a battle between primes in the coliseum! I have certain... sources... that informed me that the great arena there will soon open. Many primes will go there... And winners are well-publicized. Even if you cannot find your friend... if you go to this tournament, and do well, perhaps this friend will find you."
Weiss frowned. This guy wasn't on the straight-and-narrow. Weiss could easily tell that much. but... there was no way she could pass up the opportunity. it was the closest thing to a shot she'd heard of this whole time.
"Where would I find this coliseum?"

The man simply procured a small map. "here, free of charge. this should bring you right to it. Are you planning on entering, then?"
Weiss Nodded. "I think so. Thank you... for the map, and your help." Weiss said, feeling a bit rude now. The man was certainly... eccentric, but he'd definitely just helped her out of a jam. And she'd spent all this time thinking about what a creep he was. "I have to get to the coliseum as fast as I can... So I guess I'll see you there when the tournament starts." Weiss said, as she walked past the salesman. "Goodbye."
"Oh... You can count on it." the man said with a smile as she walked past.
Weiss had barely started to walk, before something from earlier in the conversation clicked in her brain.
"Hey!" Weiss yelled back. "So what was that you were saying earlier, about buying things with omn-"

Weiss found the words cut off in her throat as she looked back. The area was nothing but flat grassland for miles, and yet... The man had completely disappeared.
