Darkness. It was completely black.
She liked it that way.
Claire Ferguson blinked her eyes a couple times, just to make sure they were in fact open. They were. She turned her head to the side as if she was going to magically see another color. She turned her body all the way around, investigating her surroundings, but there was nothing but blackness all around her. Her first instinct was to look for a light source, like a torch, but she realized quickly that wasn't an option. She wasn't in a room. She was floating in a space. Her feet weren't touching the ground. Her next step was to use her own light - so her small hands came up in front of her. When she brought the shadow energy to her fingertips, it did in fact light up it's surroundings - she could see her hands glowing pink to match the shade of her light. But there was nothing else around her. Nothing else to illuminate.
She was used to darkness. Living her life as a bright pink girl made her wanting those dark colors in her life. But she couldn't even call this color black. It wasn't a shade or a tone. It was nothing. She was literally surrounded by nothing.
The girl known to her friends as Blink tried to remember where she was last. Did she die? She could remember different things about herself - but not everything. Only key elements. She was born in Jamaica. Then there was...Apocalypse. Him. She was a prisoner. Then she wasn't. Then she was...an X-Men. That word stirred something in her. Pride. Annoyance. Loyalty. Then there was another team. A smaller team, but with a much more important mission. It was...The Exiles. Her chest puffed up a bit as memories flooded her. The X-Men were team, but the Exiles were her team. She led them across the dimension vortex, righting wrongs in countless universes. But the memories came to an end. No conclusion, just an end. Claire tried to think of her latest memory, but she couldn't pin-point it. She didn't know what happened that led her to this...void.
Something moved in front of her. She brought her hands up defensively, summoning a glowing pink dagger in front of her face, holding it like it was a machete in a knife fight. There was a figure in front of her now. Glowing. Grinning.
“My name is Omni." The figure said. She squinted her eyes, mainly out of confusion. "This is not the world you know. This is the Omniverse. You interest me, so I have made you part of it. The Omniverse is a place that reflects the wishes of those who are part of it. But! There are rules. I will explain them only once, so listen carefully.”
What made the speech annoying was that he - or at least she assumed it was a he - didn't make any reaction to what she was doing. She could move her hand. She could grip her dagger. But he just kept on talking, like it was a pre-recorded speech, not made especially for her. It made her kind of frustrated, so her lips opened to talk. But she couldn't. No noise came out. She squinted again, this time out of anger. She couldn't even express her irritation, which only served to make her that much more frustrated.
Her dagger suddenly disappeared, causing her to gasp. In it's place was a bright, glowing orb, shining with all of the colors of the standard rainbow. It light up this darkness around her. “This is Omnilium. It’s what ties the Omniverse together. Without it, you are nothing. With it, anything you desire can be yours. But you will need more than this. If you desire it enough, you will find it. You will find that using it comes naturally. Just think of what you desire most."
Blink gripped the orb. It sounded silly. It sounded important.
Omni continued: “You will not be alone in the Omniverse. There are others. Of course, they, too desire Omnilium. Do not fear death. For as long as you interest me, you will be reborn. That’s all you need to know right now. You’ll figure out the rest soon enough. I’ll be watching … and waiting.”
Claire didn't really listen to the last part. She heard it, but she wasn't really processing it. She was focused more on what was going to happen next. This figure - Omni - disappeared and the Omnilium (or whatever it was called) in her hand went with him. She suddenly felt herself land on something - or rather, it felt like the ground came up underneath her. Then everything changed around her.
Brightness. White. Every single thing around her was glowing white.
She hated it.
"What the hell?" she cursed, her magenta arm coming up to shield her face from all of the light. This new place she was in was the opposite was that black void. She was standing on a floor at least, but it was completely white. She realized that she had just talked, and looked at herself as it to clarify that she was in fact real. "Okay, well...I guess this is a start." She looked up in front of her to see where she was.
There was a tall tree in front of her. It looked familiar - and with good reason. It was thick, aged and covered in vines all around it, with a waterfall spraying right through the trunk towards the top, into a fountain below. This was the Tree of Pietra. The beautiful piece of wilderness she had found with her love in the Overgrown Earth universe. This was the tree where she truly found her place in the universe. It was where she realized that every universe - every planet - every person - was worth fighting for, no matter how grim or dark.
She took a step forward just to put her slender fingers against the base of the tree. To feel it. It felt like it was a live. Like it had a heartbeat inside it. Her heart fluttered. She couldn't help but feel like this three had been put there just for her. Specifically for her to see.
All of the anger and annoyance washed away from her. She felt like she was Home.
She liked it that way.
