But it can also be annoying to get a bad match up and lose in the first round - that's true of any game. So what if you had a concurrent consolation tournament run similar to normal Dante's Abyss? A (slightly) more casual free for all, where new contestants can choose to enter only after they've been eliminated from the single elimination tournament? This also has the added benefit of giving the players who last longer in the single elimination tournament a natural advantage in the consolation tournament, because they enter later. It would function like a loser's bracket but run concurrently and be less heavily moderated so as to be less time consuming, and it can have its own winners with smaller consolation prizes? Just an idea.
Aside from this, I also REALLY like the idea of 2v2 or 3v3. Fighting as a team is a sweet idea. My only concern is the classic group project conundrum - if teams are randomly selected you can end up with teammates who simply give no fucks or whose styles don't jive with yours. But if you choose your teams some powerhouse teams will be heavily advantaged.

Random teams will challenge you as a writer. If you could care less about the event you shouldn't join to begin with?

Who says the teams need to be the same each round? If teams are random, they might as well change them each round. So with double elimination you get a free 'reroll' sorta thing. If teams are random, I'd rather it was like that.
I don't really care what happens as long as there's something to make this be different from just a bunch of dumb 1v1s. Even a 2v2 tournament where you can choose a friend would be fine, imo. The odds wouldn't really be any more stacked than you getting an unlucky 1v1 pairing. Random 2v2s also work.

I like the idea of changing teams, just saying.

I guess I should mention that, if we do 2v2, either rewards will need to increase or, more likely, the 2nd and 1st place teams will have to fight their partners to determine 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Third place team should be in on that. Since it's possible for the "third best" to be in the third place team.

I'd like to see 2v2 double elimination

Possible, but if they bring 4 people to the end in those 2 teams, that's likely all they'll allow to square off against each other to determine the winners. Sucks, of course, for the third place team, but it happens.

Alternatively have a singles and 2v2 bracket have two separate tournament to give people with a desired partner a chance to win and those lone wolves as well

Nah. Splitting it into two tournaments would increase the word load and decrease the payoff as less people would be doing each one.

Doing two at once doesn't seem ideal, to me. A lot of extra bookkeeping on Alex's part, for one. And it stops being Dante's Abyss and starts being 2 separate Dante's Abysses. Just seems clunky and awkward. I think it'd be best to just determine a single format (like what's going on with the voting) and make that the norm for everyone.
There's always going to be people who aren't going to be perfectly happy with how it's formatted no matter where the vote goes. The best we can do is put it to a vote and hope the people who lose the vote are still fine with the way we went.

I voted for double elimination, however i really like the idea of going at it 2v2. Wether it be random assigned partners or just signing as duo.
I believe it opens up a lot of opportunities for all writers involved. Also, buff orientated primes will be able to show their full potential.
If not...i like the tournament idea! Thank you for hosting it once again #DA18

I think just standard double eliminations would be fun and a lot less work.

I agree too, it would be interesting if there was 2v2. Sometimes that can be beneficial for any writers that aren't hardcore champs on the pvp side and they can get paired up with a writer who's more experienced in fighting. It could also help them to get better too and learn but either way, I still like the idea of a losing bracket to give one more chance on a possibility to recorrect past mistakes. DA sounds like it's getting exciting more every year. Thanks for organizing this annual competitive community event, Alex! :yay:

I don't mind a 2v2 format but the caveat is you'd be getting random partners at the start, for the duration of the event.
Top team would have to face one another for 1st place. Runner up team would face one another for 3rd place.
