Incoming 4th character
#1
EDIT: I forgot a character :woah:
Alexyana has been added to my list of potential picks.

Soooo... after clearing up questions and calculating some maths, I notice that I am gradually approaching that 4th character (I'll be donating, but that's besides the point now). I am 99% sure that even if the Omniverse were ever to get a rule allowing for 5 or even more characters I would not pick more though, so... this is a choice that matters to me!

And I need some help to make the "right" one. And you friendly folks are gonna help me, right? :zany:

So, summing up my 3 characters so far:

-Amaterasu is the 'big goals' character. With her I aim to fulfill the big ambitions I have in the Omniverse, the high-level stuff, the "Unlock all void gates", "Kill the Tarrasque", "Gain Ascendancy", "Reach the top of the rankings" stuff. She's just the right amount of serious.

-Undyne is the 'fighting' character. I should do more events with the Fishknight, but seriously - she's a great fit for all storylines that are about bumping heads, preferably those of your enemies against each other. While she may have some big goals, she's not going to be going beyond verse recognition.

-Malon is the 'All in one' character. I aim to extend her focus on shapeshifting, mimicking and mind-hive'ing (not hive-mind'ing!) even more. She will be the one who explores all the verses, meets all the people, learns as much as she can and absorbs knowledge and appearances like a sponge. Basically filling out all the cravings for non-human characters I may have and whatnot. Big goals in a way, but very different from Amaterasu.

So, this fourth character I want to be someone who can either fill a gap I don't know I had yet (perhaps a 'fun' character? Perhaps an 'evil' one? Perhaps a 'make friends with everyone' one?), or something fundamentally different from everyone else.
Most importantly, this character will not be human. Maybe not even humanoid. Maybe not even an animal or plant. I have a few ideas, but as always I welcome any and all suggestions!

A few questions for you:
-What "cravings" do your characters fill for you? I'm very curious to hear why you made the ones you have :awesome:
-Are there any characters that you could see me play? Go ham on this one - source, gender, powers, personality doesn't matter.
-What are your comments/criticisms on my list? Do you see anything differently than I do?

My current list:
-Hobbes (Calvin & Hobbes). Scrapped. This wasn't an easy decision but after some back and forth I've decided that the Black Spirit can do what Hobbes can, and more (turn into a plushie to look less creepy, for instance). Hobbes would also have no real goals or drive besides maybe smooching girls, and he's way too innocent and nice for a horrifying universe such as Omniverse.

-Black Spirit (Black Desert Online). The Black Spirit is... well, you don't really know what he is. He's always with you, acting as your friend and yet there's a creepy undertone like he's actually your enemy. You help him grow stronger during the course of the game. What if he just drifts along with some other Prime, seeking out arcane energies as they roam the verses and never quite giving away if he's friend or foe, yet too useful to leave behind? He would be almost symbiotic to the Prime or Secondary he chooses to accompany. (Image: The various forms the Black Spirit takes as he grows stronger)
[Image: 76ffd3badb482d071ccbcd3ff1bec508795.jpg]

-Drone (Starcraft 2/WH40k). Yes, yes, I know - WH40k Tyranids don't have drones, leave me alone. I'm shamelessly stealing the idea from Dark Link's thread for this one. At the risk of summoning an angry mob of fans, here's my thoughts: a Zerg Drone, or perhaps an Infested Protoss Probe, finds itself in the Omniverse. Shortly after its arrival it consumes a Tyranid and combines into something new. Its goal is to grow. Assimilate. Adapt. Simple-minded, yet it wields a Prime's power.

-Grimm Dragon (RWBY). Scrapped. The simple-mindedness of the Grimm (they're little more than animals attracted to negative feelings, they have no conscious thought as far as I know) makes this character very unsuited to be anything but a mindlessly rampaging beast, which would not be fun to play as. Besides, if I want Grimm characters, I can give some forms to Malon :frogbon:

-Alexyana (Original). Scrapped. I decided to scratch her from the list because I came to the conclusion that a fresher character would be more fitting, and I don't see Alexyana fitting in nearly as well as the other characters.

-Ainz Ooal Gown (Overlord). A fresh addition. I know I am riding the hype wave as of when I am writing this, but it is a character that I could see fitting into my roster. Ainz is on the lawful evil side, which is my favorite type of evil, and brings a good amount of comic relief to the table because MMORPG antics. He's also an intelligent thinker and has a lot of upwards potential (and I mean a lot), as well as goals. On the other hand, it may be a serious character with big goals who demands more attention than I can give him. I'll have to think this one over, once I am done with the hype wave.

-A Dragon or someone/something that can turn into one. Shyvana would be an example I juggled for a while but neither do I want to steal her from Wyatt who might return someday, nor do I think she's the one I want. She's too similar to Undyne. This one is open really, if you guys know of good dragon characters let me know!
My “cravings” were always to finally have the freedom to make the choices I wanted to make. Other than that I like the adventure and accomplishing things my own way.

Your list is fine I suppose, I will attempt to offer some ideas that could possibly interest you.

BlackGabumon:
Go round the Omniverse as a freaky monster, make friends with all, get a tamer or stay wild, gain transformations allowing you to digivolve to save your friends.

Labramon
Same thing but more dog like

SCP-049
Creepy and uninterested in conversation yet perhaps you could add to it? Perhaps it finds some new goals? Perhaps it decides to try to communicate?

In my case, I like friendly but somewhat detached people, as a)I don't like being mean; and b)I like doing my own thing. From a fighting perspective, I prefer characters who have plenty of useful yet non-battle abilities, as winning through hard thinking (as oposed to pubstoming) has always been my thing.

You could get a support yourself too. Black Spirit sounds like a fun character

So, with your three characters that you have, I notice that you have essentially covered most of the categories. Amaterasu is your ambition, Undyne is the fun, fighting-based character, and Malon is the explorer and, given her worldly travels, the friend-maker on occasion I’m sure.

You don’t have a lot of empty spaces to fill, so if you’re looking to expand your horizons into something you’ve yet to do, a darker-sided character would be the most obvious choice. But, I’m more of a fan of picking something meaningful to oneself rather than fulfilling a checklist, so do be careful of that.

That being said, as far as your list is concerned, those are some interesting choices.

My first problem with the starting two picks is that it relies on other Primes and players to progress your story, perhaps a bit too much. While that’s not an immediate problem, it does emphasize the need for cooperation, so I would pick those if you’re certain of the people you want to travel with. Of course, using a Secondary for the same task as soon as you can buy an assist would be an excellent option.

As for the Drone, do bear in mind that you would be playing a simple-minded being. Complex thoughts, more precise emotional responses, and ambitions most of all would be almost out of the question to write for. Hell, until you come up with a reason for there to be self-awareness or an independent consciousness, you may grow bored of writing for them. It’s a fun gimmick, but not something most people might commit to for the long-term.

Your Grimm Dragon idea has similar flaws to the Drone, but you countered that with the shape-shifting idea. Grimm are a lot like Heartless, so I could probably help you with that idea. So far, I think it’s the best one you have yet, but there’s not too much to go on. Something to keep in mind, though, is that if you’re going for a villain character, be careful not to just have your only reason for being evil is that you are evil. It’s too shallow and fragile of a cause for it to be the basis of your character, and once more, you might grow bored of the gimmick.

If you’re going for a dragon in general, a clever idea might be to explore the WoW dragons, if you want. I don’t know too much about Warcraft though, so it’s a thought more than a recommendation.

As for why I chose my characters and what they mean to me:
Jaixe is a Seeker of Darkness, a heartless made from a far-too curious man that messed up one day, lost his sense of self and consciousness, and drifted on as a shard of darkness that contained only instinct, emotion, and a desire to hunt for that which it lost. He eventually regained his individuality and sense of self, of course. I tell you this, because he is rather like what your Grimm Dragon idea is.

Jaixe as a character is much older than this iteration of him. His key aspect has always been pride, taken to an extreme. He desires to show that he is superior, but is confident, perhaps overly so. Calling it into question won’t elicit the typical response you may think. He desires power and influence, but cares little about holding a throne or titles. Fearing his subordinates, his cause, or what he is, is all sufficient for him. He seeks to be independent and in control, but with a Heartless twist to his nature, negative emotions are also a thing that he thrives on. Very sociopathic, honestly. His confidence, taken to an extreme, and his cunning are what I honestly enjoy the most, but his curiosity, despite that being the source of many of his problems, is a close second.

Koehler is practically the opposite. He is a zealot to his Quincy beliefs practically, with one or two possible exceptions. He’s brash, reckless, and very stubborn at times. He’s never too proud of himself, and always seeks to protect others, even at the cost of himself. His passion is his key aspect, his passion to be a guardian, to bear the burden of saving others and destroying monsters. Hell, he came to the Omniverse because, after spending years doing his best to try and keep others safe, he finally got killed by one of those monsters he fought valiantly against. He’s agile, adaptable, and generally has a resolve of steel that forces him, even through the worst of times, to keep pushing himself forward. That isn’t to say he can’t feel guilt, regret, or even depression at times, but that he trudges through them all the same. He’s light-hearted in battle, naively trusting of others, and focused when he needs to be. Not always the brightest or the most cunning, however. As someone that suffers from depressive cycles themselves and has some trust issues, Koehler is what I would like to be during those times.

Hobbes would be awesome, but I'm biased. For you, I'd say either the Grimm or Drone. It seems you're leaning toward an evil character, since you're all good so far and most are evil. The Black Spirit could do well but it'd be hard to write, with it (apparently, I'm not sure) having so little backstory. For Alexyana it seems you'd definitely like her but people switch for a reason. Something with her probably wasn't doing it for you, so you switched. It just doesn't seem to make sense to switch back to a character-you switched away from them for a reason, and that reason probably still applies. With Grimm, it'd be really fun move-wise, since it seems to be heavily shapeshifting based. The Drone could be hard to write for, but if it gains intelligence it dealing with its new intelligence would be really fun to write.

As for why I chose my characters:

Gaston was primarily to see how far I could take the joke, kinda, of playing him. But his personality is so outrageous that he's easy to characterise when I'm writing and he can be put in almost any situation, and he'll deal with it in a funny manner. I just kinda do what I want with him, throwing out any idea in a thread because with him, it works.

I chose Dick out of my love for superheroes and my desire to play an early silver-age style hero. Writing him dealing with modern day situations can be interesting. He's a much more serious character than Gaston, so most major events and big storylines will be done by him.

RWBls Grimm or Yana.

RWBY Grimm would be a fun way to just enlist yourself as an alpha and kill everything just because you're an evil being dispationate emotions.

Yana, because DINODRAGONS. And because I remember the days of Yana.

Hmm... well, I reckon Black Spirit or the Drone would probably be my favourites, personally, since spirit is both adorable and sinister, which is a really cool combination... like Kyubey, from PMMM... and Drone because I think a zerg fused with a tyranid sounds epic as hell.
Hobbes I know nothing about, but he might fit in in Ambrosia?
I like dragons when they're represented in the same way Volvagia is here, or, better yet, as the Elder Dragons are in GW2... as titanic, nigh-unstoppable beings of immense knowledge and power... in most other fantasy games/books/movies I personally feel like they're overused and underpowered.
So making a dragon that's no stronger than any other Prime...? It's not my cup of tea... though if you feel like you'd be willing to stick with the character long enough to get it up to the same level as, say, Gildarts (and buy Growth as well)... then that could be really epic.

As for my characters, I chose Hijiri because I think he's really cool, and also intelligent and ambitious enough to make for an interesting plot.
China I chose mainly because I wanted a character who was about as different as possible. China's whole shtick is being useless (well, that and eating a lot), so far... though one thing I do like about him is that it's much easier to write an OC than a cannon character, since you don't have to worry nearly as much about messing up their personality.

Well, first of all thank you guys so much for your responses! I really appreciate every bit of input, more than you may think :yay:
It's also interesting to read about why you guys made your characters, I quite enjoy the insight it's giving me as to the hows and whys of people who are playing here. Very nice!

Responding to what everyone's posted!

@Revan: Unfortunately I am wildly unfamiliar with Digimon. I've scraped the surface a few times but I wouldn't feel comfortable playing as a character from the series. Although, Labramon might be something Guu would enjoy :hee: can see her playing one. And that SCP-049 thing seems... interesting :frog: I'll have to delve a bit further into the topic. Thank you for the suggestions!

@Leonardo: Hmm, to be honest I didn't consider my characters from a "supporter" stance yet. But both Hobbes and the Black Spirit would fit well into that archetype, Hobbes as more of an emotional support and comfort, and the Black Spirit on a much more pragmatic side.

@Jaixe: Great thoughts! I figured that both Hobbes' and the Spirit's reliance on other Primes or Secondaries is a weakness, but seeing how there's constant new arrivals at the Nexus or respawns after someone dies, I would always have potential friends to go with. Assists are unfortunately not an option as I'd have to be level 6 before I can use a T1 for an entire fight. Secondaries may work, but yes. I'll have to think over if I am okay with a near 100% reliance on other players for those guys.
Do you find the Drone to be very gimmick-y? I realize where it's coming from (same with the Dragon, really - they're instinct-based animals at best) but I didn't see it as big of an issue. Definitely a good point. I might do a little test writing for this one to see how it works out. For the Dragon... it's true that it's very much a "evil because that's that" character. Especially with how Grimm have been portrayed in RWBY as far as I got, they're pretty much mindless antagonists with no goals. Might decide to discard the Grimm Dragon.
As for the WoW dragons, I already decided to not go that route, mainly because I haven't delved into WoW nearly enough to remotely know the characters. If I did, Ysera would be my primary pick because of her affiliation to the Druids and the whole 'Emerald Dream' idea (as well as her looks being awesome) but she is extremely passive and doesn't really have goals outside of keeping the dream alive (pun intended).

@Gaston: Yeah, the Black Spirit has next to no story, even the hints dropped throughout the game are vague at best. BDO isn't nearly as story-focused as most games out there, especially western ones. Your point pretty much supports Jaixe's though, because it made me notice that the dragon doesn't have much going on besides shapeshifting, which I want to be Malon's schtick. I would be better off going the other way around, with Malon acquiring Grimm forms. Alexyana I abandoned because I feel like I ran into a dead end and was unfamiliar with the Omniverse at the time, and I believe now that I could play her better if I retry now. Maybe.
On that note, I pretty much thought the same as you did with Gaston: that you made him for the memes, but then stayed with him because he works. I've skimmed through some of your writing and I'm quite surprised (in a good way) to see how fun he seems to be. Good for you!

@Pyrrha: Pretty much supporting Jaixe for the Grimm dragon too :frog: It's a "for the evulz" character, and rampaging around is going to get a dozen bounties on my head before I know it. Doesn't mean that I don't appreciate the input though, but I think you're not going to be able to hunt down the Grimm dragon with Pyrrha anytime soon Tongue

@Takanomiya: You don't know about Calvin and Hobbes? :woah: I promise you, it's an awesome comic series. Unfortunately it was discontinued but there's some 20 years of short strips which are more than worth reading.
You're also raising a good point with how dragons should be big and scary... hmm, maybe if I made the Grimm Dragon I should start off as a hatchling :frogpipe:

A random thought would be to copy Saiss's old forum-play idea (it's in the Arcade somewhere, I believe!) where the players took control of the Zerg Hive-Mind and posted what actions the characters should take. It would be a curious concept (though I can see several huge problems with it) to have a thread going parallel to the Zerg Drone's adventures, where other people can post commands from the Hive-Mind. Or maybe the Drone has a chip in its tiny brain from experimentation at the hands of the Terran Dominion (pre-Omniverse) or the Empire (post-arrival) which capts random radiowave signals from the Dataverse and translates them into orders?

I might have to do a little test-writing for Hobbes, the Drone, the Spirit and the Grimm Dragon. You guys's input is helping me a lot with clearing the pros and cons for each of them though, and again - I super appreciate every bit of it!

I've ruled out several characters following the comments of the people above (again, thank you so much for your help!), buuuut I've also added a newcomer, Ainz Ooal Gown, after a certain someone introduced me to yet another new anime to sink my hours into :frog:

The Black Spirit, the Zerg Drone and Ainz remain. I still have a good amount of time before reaching the necessary levels anyway, so I can spend some time thinking back and forth, but the thread remains open for anyone who wants to throw in their comments! It goes without saying that I appreciate any and all input you guys can give me :yay:

You could use one of them and then switch to the dragon which would make it possibly strong enough.

Other than that, I'd like to see a hivemind written and if anyone could do it you could.
