“Alright, do you know how tarot cards work? And how their order works?” Cana asked and Jared continued to look at her blankly. “Right, well before I explain is there anything I should be looking for? An intention such as love, or are you cursed and looking for a cure, or maybe close to death?”
Jared blinked, “Love and ambition, I want to know where I’ll go in the future and who I’ll be. What job I’ll have… There’s so much untol-”
“Eh-hem, I’ll stop you right there, not knowing some of that stuff, how you ascend to your greatness is one of life’s greatest mysteries, and in the same vein, victories. Also, about love, sometimes you don’t choose who you fall in love with, it just happens. It is fun not knowing, obviously, that’s not why you employed me though,” she paused.
“Wait, I’m not paying yo-” Jared surmised but was too slow.
“But, well, it is my job as someone who is called upon by the divine and magic mixed together.” She cleared her throat, “The one on this side here is the one that symbolizes your past, what lay behind you, what you have faced… This one here, above the center card is like, the possibilities, what could happen, the opportunities. The one far below the center two is about what challenges you will have to face when you get there.. The center two cards are the issue at hand and what you’re currently facing. The final one to the right here is the outcome. Remember not everything is set in stone, but it is hard to change the future.”
“Let’s find out what you’ve got, shall we?” Cana said, her fingertips inches from the reveal. Suspense building.
The first card was a monster, “Interpret that how you may,” Cana spoke hoping he wouldn’t think she was a racist, “The card above is the possibilities,” which she flipped to reveal a bird, “Oh, that’s very good. You have a lot of potential. The bird flies higher than anything else.”
Jared’s eyes were fixed on the fortune teller, ambition mixing with hungry greed.
Below, “Looks like this one is an anchor. Bit metaphorical, basically the opposite of the dove, your opportunities are equally weighed down by your adversities,” Cana informed him. “Now onto the first center card, the bottom one means the issue, sometimes it’s a card that symbolizes a job, or in your other request, love.”
Jared was sitting on the edge of his seat, couldn’t will himself to even breathe. Cana flipped the card. “The fate card,” she informed him, “Meaning your highest future.” On the card’s picture was a book with holy light shooting out of it.
“Hmm, next, your primary reason for defeat,” she flipped the blue card and it was the card of self. A person with a mirror for a face. “The card of self. You’re your own worst nightmare, I guess,” she said with a shrug.
“Finally, the outcome,” Cana said as she placed two fingers on the final card along the timeline-appearing placed set up, “A heart.”
Jared gasped, “Does that mean I’ll find love?!”
“Uh, I mean you’re paying me to be honest with you, right?” Cana hesitated.
At this point, Jared nodded his head, she could have all the free booze in the world. Cana smiled and offered a nod, “It means you will indeed, find love.”
“YAHOOOOOOOO!” Jared skyrocketed out of the room leaving Cana his entire bar cart. She didn’t have to tell his fortune to know that he’d likely never be back.
Cassandra and Cana shared a smile, “Do all those phony card tricks really work?”
“Well it isn’t phony, it’s magic.” Cana said with a diviner’s smile, “But I always let my clients decide the truth of their future for themselves.” The brunette leaned in, “He’ll meet her running in a hallway, not unlike the way he is right now.”
“No shit, I gotta see this for myself!” Cassandra stood up and ran out of the room, hoping to get a gander at the real action.
