The forest was a mess. Occasionally I did make vague motions with my magic to help Cirno follow. But it was rare, only when we needed to change direction. Only when necessary.
Except I didn't. Not then. Not when it was really needed. I could have tried. I could have warned her and given her a head start on escaping. I could hide well enough in the trees, so I'd be fine if they found my location.
But I didn't. That was a risk I didn't want to take. This wasn't part of "Dane's Brilliant Plan™". But as stated before, said plan relied on people doing what I would do. And if I were chasing me down, then I'd be a couple of clicks north of her, and probably a bit further west.
That didn't matter right now. What mattered was how I planned to deal with this. Ten minutes later and we might have had a better chance. I wished Cirno had just ran away, it would make my choice much easier. But, if she really wanted to challenge three people by herself, who was I to stop her? A much more sane person? Probably.
I did consider that she might have actually wanted or planned for my help, despite her words. Regardless of that possibility, I... I didn't want to. I choose my fights, or prepare adequately prior. Me fighting here was unnecessary. I might hurt someone, maybe even fatally wound them, but if I revealed myself I wouldn't get out of this alive.
"Sorry Cirno." I whispered under my breath, letting the words get caught in the wind. I'd like to think she heard it, but I knew that to be untrue.
I jumped away carefully, lest I make noise and draw attention to myself. I pushed on. One tree after another. One jump after another. I pushed on in the darkness make more distance between us. Some sick part of me suggested that this was actually a good thing, and that the fairy was just dragging me down. That sick part might have been justified in it's claims, but that didn't mean it was right.
I just wished I could guarantee Cirno's sacrifice wouldn't be in vain.
