“I think… I think I remember now?” Cole replied to the voices after an hour of walking through the endless whiteness towards his destination. He was slowly regaining his footing and his memory through conversing with the voices in his head. He recalled his name easily, and what the tattoos were on his arm as well, but his past was still jumbled. There were gaps in his memory that had yet to be filled.
”That’s good. At least you remember who are you now. Do you remember how to fight?” The first voice inquired. From what Cole could remember, his name was Alex, though he was certain that was merely a shortened version of his full name.
”Does it really matter? It didn’t help him before when he died, and us with him.” The other voice criticized. He was Fumetsu, someone that Cole bound to his own soul for eternity, and was and is generally an unkind person.
“I remember some of my abilities. Maybe…” Cole replied, ignoring Fumetsu’s deference. He held out his arms, holding both Quincy crosses in his palms, and with a measure of focus, conjured two ornate firearms that seemed to be little more than condensed energy drawn from the surrounding environment. He examined them for a few moments, firing once at the ground to get a feel for them, and then willed them to disperse in a flash of light, leaving faint glimmers and the two crosses still in his palms after their dispelling.
”That’s a start, at least.”
”Instead of wasting our time retracing our steps, why not consider what the child god said, hmm? About using Omnilium?”
Cole thought for a moment, recalling those words, and in trying to think of how to use Omnilium to summon, the instructions for how came naturally. With a measure of focus, he called forth some of the rainbow-colored orbs and within minutes repaired the tattering and holes in his clothes.
“Huh… Neat.” Cole commented, noting that the blood stains were also removed in the process.
”Yes, yes, very fascinating. How about transportation? Unless you want to walk the whole way…” Fumetsu continued to criticize with a sour tone. He was difficult to please, but Cole got the feeling that it really wasn’t worth trying to either.
”If you’re up for it, you could use Hirenkyaku to close the distance within a few minutes.” Alex noted.
Cole squinted at the archway in the distance, attempting to gauge the distance between here and there. He could make out faint details, and he swore that there were trees forming an archway. It was still difficult to tell from this distance though.
“I could probably make it.” Cole spoke with confidence, attempting to remember how to even use Hirenkyaku in the first place.
Stretching out his senses, he reached out and grasped the strands of energy that flowed around him and concentrated them under his feet. Energy visibly swirled to the focal points, and within moments, Cole was speeding ahead at full, moving faster than what was humanly possible.
“I seem to be… slower?” Cole commented, continually focusing energy to propel him forward with every step he took. While he was certainly moving faster than any human could imagine, this pace was paltry compared to what he was capable of before.
”I believe that Omni changed how our powers work in this universe.” Alex replied pensively.
”You will have to relearn. Not that we didn’t already, given your sudden amnesic condition.”
”You’re not helping…”
“Do you mind?” Cole scowled, the dull throbbing pain in his head having not completely disappeared yet.
Despite the increase in pace, it still took Cole roughly fifteen to twenty minutes before he could clearly make out the archway. A pair of palm trees, inordinately tall and bent towards eachother formed an archway, and between the two trees was a portal, a gateway to what seemed to be another world entirely. He could feel the cool ocean breeze graze his face, the briny smell becoming ever more prevalent. Beyond the event horizon lay a city of what appeared to be colonial-style buildings. Short, sturdy adobe, stone, and the rare wood buildings coming in a variety of rich and vibrant colors. The skies were blue over the city, and the sun was just proceeding to set, washing the ocean and city in a vivid display of orange, gold, and red. It was a radical difference compared to the white backdrop of the world Cole currently resided in.
Skidding to a halt a number a meters short of his destination, Cole looked at the portal quizzically.
”That… is not a Senkaimon. Or any kind of gate I have ever seen.” Alex commented, prompting Fumetsu to respond.
”This is a new universe made by a bored god, did you expect sensibility?”
“Maybe we’ll find more answers on the other side?” Cole offered, not waiting for affirmation before he stepped through the portal. He felt himself jerked forward, pulled away from the white, empty world he had spent so little time in, and into another of sunsets and oceans.
