Zone B -- Forest
#43
As the sounds of the violent altercation died down, the forest came to an abrupt end. The servant was greeted by a sea of tree stumps — the remains of humanoid activity in that part of the zone. It made her wonder if Syntech actually had people live on the island during times it wasn't in use or if it really was just elaborate decoration for the sole purpose of the competition. With people as seemingly extravagant as the ones running that show, it was difficult to tell.

But she had little time for such fanciful ponderings. With the trees gone, the land leading up to the shelter laid bare, left to the mercy of both the elements and any hostiles that may be nearby. Hoping dearly that her reading of the map was correct, the maid fiddled nervously with her pendant.

...With her pendant?

Gasping, she reached for the item concealed by her dress and raised it into clear view. She could hardly believe her eyes. Attached to a chain of katchin — wrapped around her slender neck and partially hidden by the explosive collar — was indeed a pendant. It was a mass of small jewels shaped in the form of an insect, softly glittering even in the dim daylight. It was the reward she received for her participation in the last Dante's Abyss.

Tamsin's visage formed a sorrowful frown. The item she held was one of a pair, the other intended for whoever she could not bear to be apart from. In the presence of its counterpart, it would emit a radiant light. But at that moment in time, it generated no such light — its twin, wherever it was, was somewhere far away.

Firmly grasping the adornment, the servant's expression changed into a determined scowl. Putting the pendant back in its place, she looked ahead and broke out into a sprint. Pellets of water bombarded her as she made her dash towards the encampment that came into view. It was a cluster of wooden shacks, buildings of stone and other simple structures. Littered all around were pieces of heavy machinery and piles of tree trunks and logs. By design, it appeared as though its former residence left it in the midst of logging operations.

Managing to arrive at the camp unhindered, the maid stopped to take a breather. Soon after came the signal that she had indeed found the right location — it was the familiar beep of the collar, temporarily deactivating the explosive charge contained within. For the time being, she was safe.
