I didn't feel like attracting much attention to myself, so laying low was a priority. Luckily for me, having a shit magical core had advantages. Namely an efficient output and free camo for my life signature. It might make travel slightly more tiring, but if I designated my unused output of mana correctly, especially considering the basic type regenerated quickly enough, I could travel under the guise of invisibility. That, if anything, had to at least give me a chance of survival in the short term. Anyway, I could probably run faster than most as well, the downside being that at top speed I wouldn't be able to mask my life signature as effectively, so to anyone adept with arcane arts my invisibility would be useless.
That said, I still moved faster than most people. Keeping my senses attuned and my defences up at the cost of a slightly reduced travel speed (and maybe an increased rate of ration consumption) was a small price to pay. I didn't want to take chances I didn't have to, not with a competition this intense. I wasn't going out without at least taking one artefact or besting another in combat. And to succeed at that, I was going to choose my fights, and not let them get chosen for me. Should that mean employing the tactics of scouting and stealth, then I would do just that.
I'd kept my shortsword drawn while travelling. It was light and short, so wouldn't impair my speed too much, yet would allow me quick access to a weapon should I need it. My longsword and shield, however, stayed in their respective places on my person. It wasn't too far to the mountains now.
