Zone B -- Forest
#17
The Sage stepped through the portal, to a scene that felt… wrong. Off in the far distance he could see the tree line of a healthy forest, but his surroundings were barren and torn, stumps stretched out across the horizon, as patches of new growth attempted unsuccessfully to reclaim the precious sunlight. The Sage dashed into the cover of a bramble, and surveyed his surroundings. The air was still around him, like the entire island was waiting for the conflict that was about to erupt. He thought he could see a figure, stalking through the dead forest at a determined pace. They were a good distance away with a large gun slung over one shoulder. Scanning the horizon, he spotted the collection of buildings that the datapad had labelled “Safehouse B” It was as good a place to get his bearings properly as any, he supposed. He glanced about from his thicket, trying to mentally plot the path that would take him to safety.

It was too open. He didn’t like how little cover the area afforded him. If any of the patches he could see littering the arboreal massacre contained a waiting ambush he would be caught out in the open. There have not yet been sounds of a conflict. Any fight that would be starting here would be sure to quickly draw others. He thought, as he weighed his options. Or cause them to head a different direction…

The Lumber camp was a safehouse, he decided. If he was caught in the act, he needed only to survive long enough to reach it. There would be little to be gained from simply waiting in this scrubbrush until everyone else killed each other, now would there. He chuckled to himself, it almost seemed the better option, but doubtless Karl Jak would not appreciate a contestant without any daring. The Sage rose into a sort of standing crouch, and ran towards the lumbercamp, attempting to keep his head down. He stopped once in a well-sheltered ditch, he hadn’t even spotted the thing from his vantage point earlier, but otherwise, the Sage kept to his course with the utmost speed.

Reaching the Lumbercamp, he ducked into one of the buildings, and allowed himself an internal sigh of relief, he heard the collar around his neck make a reassuring beep as it detected his arrival at the Safehouse. He couldn’t afford to delay for too long, the others would be arriving here no doubt soon. Now he would need to decide just where to go from here.

If history is to become legend, it first must be recorded.
